Subject: Music makes the people come together...
Hi,
Julie H (love that name) mentioned that Singapore is known for it's
intolerance for other kinds of music besides G-rated ones. It's not exactly
true. There're laws that restrict the amount of explicit contents that can
be access by the public but as we become more open as a society (as they
keep mentioning in the papers), especially in the arts scene here, there're
leeway and eyes being blinded to certain things.
Which means that it's not prudish as it sounds from what you've heard of
Singapore. We do get exposures and stuff and of course there're always
bound to be censors in every part of the world, no matter where you are, in
every manifestations.
What I'm trying to say is, when you compare say...New York City to
Singapore, there isn't much difference in both culture and society because
both are metropolitan cities but there's a little more frowning here on
homosexual issues, especially on telly (they censored the scenes in Buffy, 6
Feet Under, etc) where "Will & Grace" definitely won't make an appearance
on, but their DVDs are sold in the stores. Of course "Will & Grace" are not
outwardly, in your face in their depiction of the homosexual theme, shows
like "Queer as folk" definitely will not get a mention here one bit, but
folks do have a way of getting things when they set their minds to it.
There're a couple of idiots on the board of censors (sounds weird, imagine a
bunch of folks that sit in a panel that goes "this one's too sexy", "that's
just showing a little butt, it's okie"...) that for the life of me can't
figure out what goes through their little brain. A while ago, Janet
Jackson's "All for you" CD was banned just because of one song that was just
a tinsy bit naughty. So sometimes when you think they've got it all figured
out, they come up with something stupid like that. The CD has since been
released here sans that particular track.
Being a Tori fan here is hard not because her music is hard to get (even
though being on the phone constantly bugging the staff at HMV and Borders on
the arrival of the "a sorta fairytale" single is a little tiring) but
because she doesn't get much exposure here. It's a nice feeling to be at
work with the radio on and suddenly they start playing Tori and you stop all
that you're doing and just sing along instead of Christina Aguilera
constantly reminding us how "dirrty" she is. So far I'm pretty lucky 'cause
if you know where to look, you could find a pretty extensive collection of
Tori stuff here. Ebay is also another wonderful place to look for Tori
rarities.
Anyway I've written too much, many thanks to Julie H. (still luv that name)
for her generous offer and words of encouragement.
With regards
Louisham

from the article Woj sent us in #1735 at:
http://www.nydailynews.com/10-20-2002/entertainment/story/28203p-26838c.html
we had Tori's comments on pirating...
>"I believe in wine-tasting, but if you put a bottle of it in your bag, what
>you're saying is that you don't respect the people who made it," she says.
>"If you need to take the music, take the music. But at some point you just
>become a taker. You're a parasite."
And I thought some of the things I said about pirating a few months back on
the "Napster" discussion were a bit harsh! Interesting to note as well one
of Tori's tours was sponsored by MP3.com, but at least they're in the
business of distributing legally.
from Bethany:
>Those who downloaded the six song sampler - never fear, the songs are
>actually properly mixed and they sound MUCH better than they did on there.
Which is another reason I'd rather wait for the official release.
Poopypants Cyndi said:
> I hate sinus pills.. but they're the only thing that keeps my
>jaws from aching these days (I guess it's sinus-related).. I hate them
>because even if they say in big fat bold letters, "NON DROWSY"..
Wanna swap? I had a really filthy dose of the flu a couple of weeks ago and
my doctor put me on a double dose of day and night flu tablets. Of course,
the day ones are "non drowsy" which is fine and the night one is supposed
to sleep. Bullshit. I was lucky to sleep three hours at night I was so full
of amphetamines. On one of those sleepless nights I read the box and it
says "The blue night-time medication may cause drowsiness.... however,
these tablets may, in some pseudoephedrine sensitive individuals cause
sleeplessness." No shit. No wonder I always enjoy getting the flu - I'm on
speed. *rolls eyes* I didn't even care that I wasn't sleeping. At least
they did the job.

Subject: Two Tickets for Camden, NJ -- Left Orchestra, Face Value!
Hi everyone,
Due to some unbelievable stroke of luck, I got tickets
for Tori's show at Riverside Church this morning!
I therefore have two tickets to the Camden, NJ show
that I sadly need to part with. They are in section
104, Row BB, seats 17 and 18, the left orchestra.
These are solid seats. I'm looking to make absolutely
no profit from this sale, just trying to recover the
total price I paid for the tickets -- $97.00 for the
pair. I'll pay for priority mail to send them to you.
I will put these on Ebay if I get no response here,
but I figured I'd give fellow EWF's first dibs. Please
check my ebay feedback under the name slats8736.
I'd prefer payment by Paypal or money order, but I'll
also take personal checks if you're willing to wait
for it to clear.
Please email me ASAP if you're interested, first
person to contact me gets these!
Have a great day,
Mike

i got "scarlet's walk" yesterday (i ordered the special limited edition
package online), and i love it! it's so wonderful!
without spoling anything for those who don't have the cd yet, here's my
first impressions of all the songs. before getting the album, i only let
myself listen to "a sorta fairytale," but there's a slightly different
version on the cd.
amber waves - beautiful, kinda sad
a sorta fairytale - good for driving, like smiling through disappointment
wednesday - interesting, reminds me of being in a cafe
strange - very pretty
carbon - soothing, ambient
crazy - sad, sweet
wampum prayer - like an invocation?
don't make me come to vegas - interesting beat, feels like longing
sweet sangria - nice and flowy...
your cloud - wavy, soft, dreamy
pancake - funky piano!
i can't see new york - sad, beautiful, reminds me of some of her earlier
stuff
mrs. jesus - pretty and interesting, thought-provoking
taxi ride - kinda fun, reminds me of gazing out the car window while riding
through the city
another girl's paradise - i zoned out halfway through, but i liked it... had
a hypnotizing effect
scarlet's walk - soft, kinda mysterious
virginia - nice piano
gold dust - kinda sad, metaphoric
tori is happiness...

Inside are two cardboard sleeves, one with the cd, one with the dvd, the
map, polariods (which are so beautiful), stickers (which are so cute) and
this tiny little pewter charm (mine was a book).
i too bought the limited edition - from virgin megastores in cheltenham if
anyone wants to know. it was sheathed in plastic and un-tampered-with.
however it contains only the cd, dvd, map and polaroids. where are my
stickers and tiny pewter charm??
although i'm tempted to say, "who cares", because this is a great album.
some of the stuff on here really is up there with tori's very best work
ever. the first 3 tracks are outstanding - wouldn't have sounded out of
place on either LE or UTP in my opinion. and i think "your cloud" and "gold
dust" rank alongside "1000 oceans" for tear-jerk value. the main criticism
i've read in the uk press is that the album is over-long and contains a
certain amount of filler, and i think there's a grain of truth in this. so
far, i'm not big on "strange", "carbon", "crazy" or "sweet sangria". but
remembering the way TVAB grew on me, i think these might well sound much
better the more i hear them. all in all i agree with bethany that at first
listen, this is tori's best album for many many years.
all for now,
matt
"how did it go so fast?" you'll say as we are looking back. and then we'll
understand, we held gold dust in our hands.

Yeah, I know. Scarlet's Walk came out today and I'm not talking about it. :)
I will.
Hope y'all got yours.
I thought some of you might like this link. Every time I read this essay it
makes me cry.
http://www.petfish.org/stuff/elves.html
"The transition from their world to ours is not an easy one. Intricate
rituals and incantations are involved. The transition is not easy on the
soul. A great deal is lost. They may have no idea who or what they are at
first. They may or may not find out. They will know that they are not like
everyone else.
They will know that this world is not theirs. They will faintly remember
something better, where things made sense and worked like they ought to,
where love and magic had the power to heal.
They will know that what makes other people happy does not make them happy,
and that what makes them happy makes them happier than anyone else alive.
They will see things that others cannot see, hear things others cannot hear,
feel things others cannot feel, and know things others do not know.
They will laugh a great deal or cry a great deal or both.
They will love humans individually, but have a hard time with humanity as a
whole that may occasionally approach loathing.
They will have a handful of very close friends, and often be very lonely.
They will be unhappiest when forced to act like a human and do the things
that humans do, want the things that humans want, or when they are convinced
that they actually are one.
Things will not be easy for them. Because of their memories of the other
side, the world will seem to them to be a wondrous calliope with just a few
teeth missing on one of the cogs, and because of this tiny deficiency, the
music is all off key, the horses are crashing into each other, and the
children are frightened, bruised and crying.
The solutions will seem obvious and no one else will listen.
They will be repeatedly punished for shouting FIRE! in a crowded theater
when the building are in flames no one else can see. They will get slapped
on the wrist for pointing to the EXIT signs when everyone else is running
around screaming and trampling each other.
They will be zealous, fanatical, and didactic about their beliefs. They will
feel utterly confused.
They will have ecstatic visions and babble incoherently. They will be
extremely articulate. They are prone to long periods of silence. They have
no idea how to say what they really mean.
They will spend a lot of time with children and animals.
They will become drunkards and dope fiends, organic gardeners, Essene
soapmakers, carpenters, madmen, magicians, jugglers and clowns, lunatic
physicists, painters and scribblers, travellers and wanderers.
They will dress in bright colors, frumpy sweater, or all black.
They will smoke too much and drink too much. They will eat only macrobiotic
foods. They will develop addictions to Mountain Dew.
They will often be accused of living in their own fantasy world.
They will make great lovers. Yeah, even the trolls.
They will spend too much time either making love or thinking about it.
They will speak to inanimate objects.
They will have much brighter eyes than everyone else.
They will expect their magic to work in this world and their love to heal,
and they will be crushed by this world, and often they won't expect it.
It will come close to killing them.
They will visit the places where the connections still exist: the
waterfalls, the mountains, the ocean, the forests. They will draw on all the
power they have, and sometimes, sometimes, the magic will work. And
everything will be wondrously easy. The teeth will grow back on the
calliope's cog, the tune will right itself, the horses will bob gracefully
up and down, around and around, and the children will giggle and sing with
cotton candy stuck to their cheeks and noses.
They will spend their days trying to reconnect a branch that millions are
busy sawing away at. Often it will be more than they can bear.
While the rest of humanity is busy working on new and more efficient ways to
lay waste to the Earth with the push of a button, they are saving it, a
handful at a time.
They will share a common conviction that they are the only sane individuals
in a world gone mad.
They're right."

Well, Michael Moore is a comedian who's speciality is political satire. Ever
see 'Canadian Bacon?' The charm is his ability to reveal the stupidity
(however subtle) in his subjects.
He has made several movies and written several books. I recommend checking
