I forgot to say this before, but thanks to everyone who set me straight
(heh) on the Peter Pan reference. I never did like that story very much,
honestly, so I'm not surpised I had no idea it was a direct reference to the
movie.
Listening more to Mrs. Jesus, I like how when she sings about "whether you
listen to John or Paul," it makes me think of the Beatles. I know she's
talking about the apostles, but I usually trust Tori to throw in some
double-meanings now and then. (And yes, this is on top of me thinking
there's a reference to "Stairway to Heaven" in it).
Anyone know who Gemma is?
Beth

How can you not love lines like this?
It still amazes me how articulate Tori can be. After all these years, she has
not lost that ability.
I have fallen hard for this album. It resonates so many chords in my soul it's
not even funny. Listening to this album, I've laughed; I've cried; I've been
drunk; and I've been sober. It never loses meaning.
The one unfortunate thing? "Another Girl's Paradise" is like looking in the
fucking mirror.
But maybe that's not so unfortunate.

Subject: Mr. Wednesday
My GOD there are a lot of little Neil references in
this album. Maybe I'm just noticing 'em a lot more
because I'm in the middle of reading _American Gods_
right now... but jeez.
At least it really really makes me like the song
"Wednesday", which I suspect I wouldn't care for too
much under normal circumstances.
So, I finally came up with somewhat of a "review" of
this album, but most of it was, "boring, but it sounds
pretty". Where are the insane banshee wails? Why
isn't the Bosendorfer featured more? Yeah yeah, sure,
she's "evolved" or something. People's music is
allowed to change. But I think a lot of the songs
sound waaaay too similar to each other.
Maybe I'm just spoiled from the great range of
emotions on her other (pre-SLG) albums.
I have more that I want to say, but I'm going to sort
through my thoughts first so that I don't have to be
such a Negative Nancy.
~Linda~

Subject: Christina Aguilera/Britney Spears Slut Competition.
Simon answer to tharoxanne the nuttybakergirl (is there a nutty butcher and
nutty
candlestickmaker?) statement:
Am I the only one that thinks that there is a competition between Aguilera
and Brittney Spears on who can be the sluttiest?
Not the only one. Totally creepy the image they project and how despite
that some people will still say they're role models for girls.
I agree with Simon that the image the project is awfull, but I excuse it in
Christinas's case, is there is such a thing...
I have been a fan of hers since 1999 and just picked her new album STRIPPED
today (It was released today in Argentina).
I am SHOCKED, this is really creepy. STRIPPED (her new album) is so mature,
both vocally and lyrically that is shocking. It seems to me (from my 1st
listen to the album) that she is trying to built her a more ROCK/R&B
oriented image, more real to herself and her artistic vision of her as an
artist and performer. Listen for instance to MAKE ME OVER (go, donwload it
quick ;) it echoes HOLE's music from 1994's LIVE THROUGH THIS (which I own
and L.O.V.E !). The album is flawless and stunning, in it's own way. You
CANNOT try to compare Christina to Tori, for instance.
I think STRIPPED is Christina's 1st attempt of a concept album, the one of
her search of self- acceptance in the storm of being ripped off by the press
and public eye while also trying to exorcize personal demons form the past.
The album has really creepy moments like the used of
Christina's girly register in I AM OK while she retells her memories of her
father physically and Emotionally abusing her mother in front of her eyes.
That track is chilling. This is heavy stuff. Also the fact that the album
includes little vocal interludes and spoken comments that sequences the flow
of the songs ads to the overall feeling and makes an interesting listening.
I really like that she is the producer and co-writer of all songs. I think
she is talented.
Back to the image think, I think that in Christina's case it acts as an
TROJAN HORSE (To make people buy her album) and MAINLY TO ME as a metaphor
of the emotinal theme of the album; the one of being SENTIMENTALLY &
EMOTIONALLY STRIPPED.
(Which by the way was experienced by Madonna on her 1992 venture SEX/EROTICA
combo of Book and Cd; however how far was Madonna stripping herself
emotionally is a theme to discuss. In my opinion the album's dichotomy is
that she stripped herself in the book
to CLAIM to do it emotionally in the EROTICA album while she was doing
partially so, while keeping her weaker and softer side hidden from view.
Like stripping only her public persona, but leaving out of sight her real
self, the person behind the performer. Well, but that is another story :)
I agree the MTV Video of DIRRTY is sort of tacky, but I think than in
Christina's case (while I am not justifying her artistic choices) is a
vehicle that serves to the albums message.
I think she has a message to say.
While on the other hand I see Britney Spears more of an Hypocrit. I think
she is an instrument of the chauvinism and hypocresy of the showbiz. She
rarely writes her songs. And more dangerous : she portraits the image of a
double standar. She claims to be innocent but shows a kinky inmage
underneath. She stands up for virginity and then appears in the middle of an
orgy in her I AM A SLAVE 4 U video. I think she intentionally plays the
MADONNA/WHORE images overlapping them because in that way everybody gets
what they want, there is an image for everyone. But... where is Britney the
person? What happens when all the make up, fancy clothes and affected
pronunciation is gone? Is there a voice ? Is there a message? Is there
something? Mmmmmm I have my doubts.
I think that Christina is projecting this image to fit the whole theme of
her album. But RCA commited the mistake to releasing first the video of
DIRRTY and destroying the whole thing and making people label her as a whore
in their minds. Pretty much the same as the whole Madonna thing as far as
1989's LIKE A PRAYER ALBUM goes. Or in Tori's case with the BOYS FOR PELE
ALBUM, people in the press made a big BUZZZZ about the photo of her nursing
the pigglet rather than focusing on the ART, THE MUSIC. LUCKILY EWF, are
all about the music. I HOPE people take a moment to listen to Christinas
music and craft rather than paying attention to the glam and the glits.
Listen to the album, you might be surprise.
THIS IS JUST MY POOR OPINION ON THE WHOLE THING, just my 2 cents.
See Ya :)
Daniel
