Subject: Ethics and the Professor....
Teacher/Traditional student relationships are verboten. Because this is an
all women's college with a large contingent of "Lifelong Learners", the
ethics are a bit different. He cannot be currently my professor, nor can I
attend another one of his classes. He can't be an advising member of my
academic staff (dean, advisor, etc...), nor part of my major department. If
a student of consenting age (big joke, seeing it has to be over 30 for a
student to consent) and a teacher wish to develop a relationship, it has to
be done outside campus (no duh).
I ran through the ethics code with a fine tooth comb looking for a good
reason to drop this whole soulmate thing.
I don't believe in "Young Love" and hearts a flutter, and the fact mine
fluttered once pissed me off to no end. I am this pure, intellectual,
spiritual being. How dare I have base, physical longings???? ;) But I do.
OH I DO.
But walking into his arms is more like walking into warm water, a "hello
friend" feeling.
How does he feel? He loves me (but doesn't know what sort of love). He is
so scared that he will be hurt by a dream come true, he's willing to let the
dream walk. Maybe. I literally blew his mind by playing out a scene that
has played in his head for 30 years. I said all the words he always dreamed
would be said. And now he's scared shitless. And he doesn't want to lose
something, but he doesn't want to walk in scared.
I've given him till the 4th of July to say "No, move on". I've given him
forever to say "Maybe", because once he says maybe, that will be yes. But I
handed him my heart and it's only fair he return it if he's going to go the
cowards way.
But, he's my soulmate. And MY soulmate doesn't succumb to cowardice. Just
like his soulmate doesn't suck down tobacco and big macs. Over a week
tobacco free and it was so much easier than I ever thought.

brian...when i wear button-down shirts (rare) i do it from the top down.
that's a bad idea when you're tired and running late though because you
always run the risk of missing a button. so, in general you should button
from down up. speaking of clothing, i need to toss out this pair of boxers i
have. *sheds a tear* they are too old and yesterday i accidentally tore
them. i've had them so long but i think i need to throw them out.
i think we should discuss favorite items of clothing. oh, and now we can all
go and have anal sex in the nine states that previously it was illegal
before thursday's ruling. hooray for justice! ;)

Subject: Prodigal
Howdy Turners,
It has always amused me when people misuse the word
prodigal to mean, you know, the return of the
long-lost, as per the biblical story. And this is the
sense in which I use it today, although I do it
ironically, so therefore it is twice the amusement.
Yes, indeed, it is my return to posting to RDTRN,
after a long hiatus, and my return is truly biblical
in proportions! Check out the length of this post. Of
course, I haven't written the post yet, it may not
turn out that long. We'll see how we go.
By the way, the true meaning of prodigal is, you know,
like, extravagant, or excessive. One of those. An
abundance of generosity, sort of thing. I think the
guy in the bible story gave all his money away, or
something? I was never very good in Sunday School.
So, for those who don't know/remember me, my name is
*&%#@, but I go by Julio around here, for reasons lost
to the mysteries of time, or archives. I've been here
for, ooh, some years. I lurk, mostly, but I have had
periodic bursts of posting. Usually well-received, but
not as well-received as was my absence, I am sure. I
am one of those Australians who live on the list
(hello to all the others, except Cooper, who is a
sod), but, somewhat amazingly, I have relocated to the
wondrous national capital of that wondrous entity, the
USA. Yes, I am a DC resident now. Actually, I am a MD
resident, although I am to become a DC resident in a
matter of weeks. Where I am living is horribly
suburban. I am moving to locales where it is much
easier to get around, and mugged. So, you know,
plusses and minusses. Minuses? Minusses? Whatever.
Life balances out, generally, is the point.
So far my American sojourn has been reasonably good. I
have enjoyed eating different breakfast cereals,
driving on the worng side of the road, reading the
numbers on my currency rather than trusting to colour
recognition, getting picked up for saying things like
elevator and holiday, and telling people that I miss
wrestling crocodiles and do they know where I can get
one? So far, noone does. Are there no crocodiles in
this country? Also, your beer sucks. As does your
wine, what little of it I've tried. (The implication
being, I realise, that I have tried much of the beer.
This is accurate.)
So. You know. I had some replies. I'll get to them.
It's good to see the list pick up again, I was
genuinely worried that it would shrivel away to
nothing for a while there. And so did I post then? No.
Lazy, you see. But today I got sufficiently bored.
Yes, I know, bored in a new city full of fun things to
do. <koff> So shoot me.
Not many replies, actually.
John was talking about the Matrix a little bit. And I
haven't seen it, so I can't comment, although I have
seen the new X-Men and I do concur that that was
rather good. I was a little surprised. I tried to see
the Matrix Reloaded today, and the session that I
thought was a 12 noon turned out to be a 12 midnight.
Past my bedtime, I'm afraid, so I had to see Hulk
instead. Or is it The Hulk? Whatever. I can recommend
that you stay away from it. It starts off with some
promise, but, boy, does it disappear quickly.
Interestingly, both X-Men and Hulk have Australians in
the lead roles, assuming I can say that Wolverine is
the lead role in X-Men, which I think I can. We're
everywhere. Talking movies, how does everyone feel
about the impending Terminator 3? I may have been
slightly more juvenile when T2 came out, but my
recollection is that it was really rather good, and
tied everything up brilliantly well. Adding another
sequel, it seems to me, will horribly cheapen the
second one and, by extension, the first one, which was
also good. Of course, I just found out that Claire
Danes is in the enw one, so maybe I will see it after
all.
Megan said "NO ONE TELL ME A THING, DAMMIT!" regarding
the new Harry Potter book. I have read three Harry
Potter books since my arrival in this country, which
says something about something, but I'm not sure what.
I don't quite get what the big deal is, but they are
fun and easy to read, and so I do need to read the
fourth one so that I can read the fifth one. I am
intrigued about who she's bumped off. I have no
theories, though, and Megan says it's a taboo subject,
so we should all perhaps shut up about it.
Brian posed the burning button-up or button-question.
I must say I also button from the top down, and have
always been mystified that the opposite is the
generally preferred methodology. I mean, the decision
revolves around which way it's easier to line the two
sides up, right? So that you get the right button in
the right hole? And isn't it easier to do that from
the top than from the bottom? I think so, anyway. If
you do button from the bottom up, what order do you
_undo_ the buttons in? I undo from the top as well.
Which is just logical.
Brian also said:
It doesn't necessarily have to have
racist connotations, it goes back to simple
white=good, light, safe and
black=bad, dark, dangerous.
Careful, Coops. Don't you think that the whole
good=white, bad=black thing might be based in racial
issues? There are certainly those who think so. I have
always wondered about it, and it always reoccurs to me
when I watch Star Wars, which is the simplest
white/black good/bad scenario I can think of. I have
no evidence to present, but if anyone does, I'd be
very interested. On a sidenote, I recently read
something highlighting the use of a black character in
movies to be a sort of guardian angel figure to the
white characters. The problem with this was that the
black characters were entirely superficial, boring and
relatively meaningless compared to the white
characters. I wish I could remember all the examples
they used ... the most recent was Morgan Freeman
playing God (wearing all white clothes, interestingly)
in Bruce Almighty. Others were Whoopi Goldberg in
Ghost and someone (was it Will Smith?) in Bagger
Vance, which I haven't seen. Yes, I saw Ghost, leave
me alone.

Mmmmm. This is Liz Phair. Yummy. "We haven't fucked
yet, but my head's spinning." :) Liz is good. I did
the pre-order online thing and scored myself an
autographed copy. I don't know if these thigns are
genuine or what, but hey, it's cool. I like Liz. One
of the cool things about having moved to the USA is
all the tours I get to go to. In the next couple of
months, I will have the opportunity to see Liz,
Radiohead, Pearl Jam and, yes, Tori. Hey, Tori
content, look at that! :) I am actually on the hunt
for anyone who wishes to attend the Tori show with me
... I have tickets for the Columbia MD show, which
also features Ben Folds (who is an honorary
Australian, by the way). I think it is August 27.
Anyone interested, gimme a holler. Anyone who wants to
check out any of those other gigs can also gimme a
holler, I am up for meeting Toriphiles in the area. I
haven't got Radiohead's Hail To The Thief yet, but
I've heard it and I like it. Who else digs it? It is
highly likeable. On first listen, I think I liked it
better than anything since OK Computer.
And so we have reached the end. I don't know if it was
biblical, but it was good for me. :)
Rock. Me. All. Night.

I heard something in the news the other day about another country being
upset with the behaviour of our soldiers on leave. Granted, Aussies on
vacation are usually a bunch of drunken yobbos, but to be outraged by the
sport of Flaming Arseholes?
I don't think I've ever heard of Flaming Arseholes being played by any
other nation. It usually involves copious quantities of alcohol and a
nearby water source, like the ocean. It's a favourite in the beach/surfer
culture. It's like the name suggests. A bunch of guys get naked, stick a
rolled up piece of newspaper up their clackers and light it. The last guy
still running around with it between their cheeks is the winner. I ask you,
is there any reason to get upset at this bit of harmless fun?
John B. quoted me in #1831 with:
> > I don't see the point in one that's too small either.
It sounds so unfortunate taken out of context.
>there were two women who had roomed together in college, had got
>an apartment together after college, had lived together for several years,
>neither of them ever dating anybody, before they realized they were gay
>and became lovers.
So much about relationships is a matter of right person, right time, right
place. You can mix in any elements of wrong person/time/place into that.
I'm yet to get all three right at the same time.
While in the example you use, if one had made the move before time it would
be quite likely things would have worked out badly. If neither had showed
any gay tendencies early in the piece, it would certainly have been a leap
of faith to lay it on the other. In this case, time probably was their
biggest ally, in that they could get used to the idea of being a couple
long before anything actually happened.
BTW, I still think The Matrix Reloaded was a load of unmitigated crap.

You don't want to know about how Hermione seems to die but is really
possessed by a cosmically powerful entity called the Phoenix? Okay,
I won't mention it.

Absolutely true, though I don't know how uniform they are, or whether
they would be enforced, especially when the student is somewhat older
than most of her peers. But it is something to be careful about,
that's for sure.
I heard a story years ago about a professor and a student who ended up
living together, but that was at a small and very liberal Quaker
college.
> When I was in school, a professor was caught having a
> relationship with one of his students, and he was fired,
Wasn't it in Wonder Boys that the professor had married one of his
students (the wife who left him, who we never see)? Was that based
on a real story? I seem to remember that, but I'm not sure.
I'm watching my other computer, where I've been installing RedHat
Linux 9 for most of the weekend (well, I've been trying, anyway). It
had RedHat 7, but that's old hat now (so to speak), but 9 is much
bigger, and that machine has a small HD (3Gig, sigh, I remember when
40 Meg hard drives were huge), so it's taking some fiddling.
One thing I did was eliminate Netscape and Mozilla. I use Opera
anyway, and it's much smaller. And I eliminated GIMP, which I never
use. I did keep the multimedia stuff, though, since I'm thinking I
might get a CD burner someday.
As B/4,
