Subject: Kill the Geology Teacher!!!!

I'm still furious about the test I took Wednesday night. I spend days
working on study guides and making practice tests that I take over and over
so I have half a chance to get an "A". I know that NO ONE studies like I
do, that it is definite overkill, but it's the only way I know.

So I walk into class Wednesday and hear all these different theories being
discussed and wrong answers flying around the room. I just plugged my ears
and tried to stop my stomach from eating itself up. So the teacher walks
in, draws a diagram to explain the theory that currently was being
discussed, and then hands out the test. A couple of women start in with
"It's open notes, right Brian?", same sort of teacher teasing I hear at
every test.

The dude turns and says, "Sure, pull out your notes. Science isn't
something to be memorized but to be retrieved." Where are my notes? At
home, with all my study guides and practice tests. Grinding my teeth in
anger I just starting marking down answers, barely even reading the
questions. What does it matter? It wasn't a test. It was an exercise. I
finished in 10 minutes (my anger made me a little slow), didn't go over it,
just handed it to Brian and asked when I should return to class. He gave me
45 minutes, so I walked over to my professors office and looked at all the
pictures of him hanging on his door (I really like the one of him driving a
front end loader over a couple of students as he flashes the peace sign!),
and was able to calm down a bit. I did a circuit of the campus to kill a
bit more time, then finally sat in my car and listened to music until it was
time to return.

He started his lecture and as the silence grew, he started looking to me to
answer some of his questions. I scarcely raised my head from taking notes
and refused to answer anything, until I couldn't take his stares and just
would monotonally say, "the break-up of Pangea", or "metamorphic suturing"
and he'd have to repeat it so the other students could hear it. Why the
hell should I help him teach the class if he's just going to screw me in the
end? I waited for everyone else to leave and then told him I thought it was
really shabby to announce use of notes at the beginning of the test (it is
College, after all!) and that if he was planning to do the same for the
final, I'd appreciate warning so I don't waste time actually learning
anything. He sort of laughed and said the final is never with notes. I
kind of smiled and said, "In college, no test should be with notes." and
then walked. Good thing we have no class next week. I may be back to my
old cheerful self with enough time away from it. I have no clue how I did
on the test and quite frankly don't give a damn.

So I have to spend the next week writing a research paper. We are assigned
to write a geology field guide for anywhere in the world that we want to
know, so I picked Bodega Bay/Shell Beach in No. Calif. It's my old stomping
grounds, and I used to spend days out in the tide pools. It's pretty
interesting learning why all the tide pools are there (it has to do with
subduction of the ocean crust under the continent), and that the west side
of the fault rode all the way up from Baja.

My professor is still going nuts with his crap fest, but may have a moment
to breathe in a few weeks, and maybe we'll actually spend some time
together. I never thought I could ever be this patient. I'm not ever
majorly disturbed that I have to wait. I guess he really must be worth
waiting for. "The more life keeps us apart, the more love will grow" so say
the Moody Blues.

Fairy Blessings,

"I'm doing catch-up on the last six months of "New Yorker" magazine (I got a
3 year subscription for $50, never realizing it is a weekly magazine)."

what?! where can I get 3 years of the New Yorker for $50? is that a regular
thing? i want i want i want. Rolling Stone now has this deal that you can be
subscribed for THE REST OF YOUR LIFE for $99. too bad it's a sucky mag.

for me, I find the New Yorker is the perfect thing to read during the school
year, when i'm a little too busy and brain-fried to actually read
full-length books. when i was abroad i bought it every week, mostly because
i really really missed New York City.

> what books has everyone been reading?

i just finished rereading "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. What a
great book. I kind of wonder what Tori would think of that book, if she's
ever read it. I also just finished reading "Please Stop Laughing At Me..."
by Jodee Blanco (i seem to be slipping into another nonfiction phase), which
is a pretty devastating account of the author being teased and bullied
throughout junior and high school. i think it really touched on something
that most books on this subject didn't: that even the most well-meaning and
loving parents are still clueless as to how to help a child or teen who's
being bullied and abused by her peers. but anyway, a good book.

dammit, i wanted to reply to what Brian said about my comments about Liz
Phair's new album...it was like a million digests ago. let me dig for a
moment....

okay:
"From what I've read, she's doing what she wants. If Liz wants to be a pop
princess, who am I to judge? Who are the people that really count? "Exile
In Guyville" won critical acclaim, but how often have we thought the
critics have got their heads firmly planted up their butts?"

Today at work I read an article in Billboard about the new album. In it, she
basically says "blame me if you don't like this album", but then the article
goes on to say that her label laid down all these rules for her album. such
as the four songs she co-wrote with The Matrix had to sound like "hits"
(whatever that is), or they (the Matrix) didn't get paid. that and if this
album doesn't sell, she's getting dropped from the label. she also said in
the article that she expected the new album to alienate her core fan base
that she built on the modest success of her last three albums. which is what
I meant when i said the "people who count" - the people who think she is an
amazing indie rock goddess whose whole stance of "fuck society and what it
thinks i should be as a woman" came across as genuine rather than some sort
of manufactured rebellion designed to appeal to disgruntled suburban 13 year
olds (see: Avril Lavigne).

but what it comes down to in the end for me is the music. If Liz decided to
a pop princess and the music was good, I would not have a problem with her
new image, because it's the music that counts, not what she's wearing on the
cover of the album. but the music isn't good, in my opinion. maybe if i
hadn't heard (and loved) her previous albums, i wouldn't be as painful as it
is for me. i might even like it. but how can I be expected to swallow
something so shallow and obvious when she wrote the songs that are on Exile
in Guyville, Whip Smart and Whitechocolatespaceegg?

for the record, Exile in Guyville didn't just get critical acclaim...it's
her bestselling album, with a little over 500,000 copies. which isn't really
bad, considering she was an unknown artist with a debut album. i think it's
one of the best albums of the 90s, and definitely in my top 10.

with that, she was gone.

aloha, RDTRNeriffic people. I've been busy with life.. and
school. LAST NIGHT.. I was graced with the chance to go see Rocky Horror
Picture Show with my friend. let's just say.. I drooooooled over Tim
Curry in that movie, oh my SHIT, he is fucking hot! *ahem...* okay.
well.. yeah. anyway.. I'm SO sorry for being so quiet. school is
consuming like that it seems.. and if you want any day-to-day updates on
me, go to www.icenine.org/cyndi and read my blog. :) the page also got a
redesign. :D *grin* now.. ON WITH THE REPLIES!

our favorite Succubus Megan said: "Summer school, summer school, rah rah
rah. It sucks, but it's worth it, I think, in the long run."
I have to agree. you graduate sooner. :D

Megan then said: "What am I gonna do? I mean, I want to write and I WILL
sell stories and I WILL get a cult following because, dammit, that's the
type of stuff I write; the stuff that attracts the weirdos and the
freaks. Like me."
*likes you* and I'll HELP! and you'll help me do the same thing!
... right? :D lol seriously. we'll kick ass.. ALL OF US.. someday soon.
well.. we already do, but.. the rest of the world will be aware of it..
someday soon. :D

Say Coops, how's the bathroom re-doing coming along?

SPEAKING OF HARRY POTTER...... I read it. I like that Harry's pissed with
the world and showing it.. but DAMN that was a lot of hell that he went
through in this book, no? :-\ that poor poor Harry. :P I was wondering if
it was ever gonna start looking up.

Megan: can you tell us what EXACTLY you don't like about Scarlet's Walk?
is it the style of the songs, the songs, or the whole damn thing, or
what?

saith winter: "Here's wishing you a safe trip. I'm well acquainted with
marathon drives. Last fall it was Maine to Moab in 2 days."
Thanks for the well wish. I appreciated that. :) just thought I'd
say so. :) and yeah.. marathon drives. FUN. :P lol.. sometimes, I'd
rather fly.

Bethey, I just now looked at your site.. and I love the letter to
America... as sad as it is.. :(

Jessica said: "amazing how normal harry potter is despite being so famous
in the wizarding world. it's proof that famous people are normal and
still don't understand the opposite sex!"
yeah, I totally hear ya there. I don't think that the girl he dug
is too.. um.. GOOD for him. not yet anyway, but then again, I could be
wrong. lol

Bethey, how's the no-more-smoking thing working for you? :D oh yeah and
if it's of any comfort to you now, I personally believe in more than one
soulmate on more than one level. I don't think there's only one soulmate.
there's "THE ONE" which is the one that you spend the rest of your life
with and love and is the one that people typically think of as their
soulmate.. but I think there's that, and then your best friend(s) and
favorite family member(s), etc.

John K asked: "Has Tori been a spring board to other artists for you?"
well.. if I can get my hands on anything else by him (I read Snow
Glass Apples), I'm gonna say Neil Gaiman. he rocks. :) (and is it "gay
man" or "guy man" ?? o_O)

now to answer Coop's "button up or down" question.. I button down.
always.

and Coops, what's gamma globulin...?? o_O

oh speaking of selling Tori stuff.. I'm selling my Michael Jackson stuff.
(not the albums.. just stuff I've collected) at
www.icenine.org/mjforsale/forsalebyothers.html SO.. if you or a friend
are a fan of collecting Michael Jackson memorabilia, GO THERE! :)

okay.. birthdays time: happy belated (very very belated) birthday to
Holly, Rikki, Bonnie, Kay, and Estraven! *hugs and kisses* hope they were
fantabulous. :)

my favorite item of clothing is my faded olive green shirt that has "Life
is good." written on a blue oval.. in white. :)

says our wonderful Megan: "...Or maybe I'm just angry because I'm
listening to NIN."
yeeeHAW! is that not just fun? :D I've been getting kinda more
into punk these days... strange? yes. I'm also developing a feeling of
general teenaged angst.. and I'm almost fucking 22 years old. whyyyyyyy?
*beats head upon the wall*

oh and Megan.. as for that lump... GET IT REMOVED!!!!!

quoth the Megan: "What do you believe happens when you die?"
I believe, in a general sense of the word, either Heaven or Hell.
but I don't believe in HELL so much as flames and turmoil and shit. since
having learned some of what the Mormons believe, I've adopted a few
beliefs of theirs as my own... and they believe that there's a "spiritual
prison" that people go to.. and that good people can go down and preach
and try to help the people that were left behind.. and I really really
like that belief because.. if God is so loving and forgiving.. and so
caring for the rest of us, then why would he be so quick to send us to
HELL? seriously.

and Jessica.. Stonehenge..... a giant clit? ........ hmm.. intriguing.
o_O

Bethey, I really really like your belief in what happens after we die. I
really do. I mean the way that you believe that after (for example) *I*
die, what I believe happens will happen to me. :)

Gab.. big George Harrison fan, are we? :) *applauds* :D

Jessica, don't overuse that vibrator. that's baaaaaaaad for you if you
do. :-\

AAAAAAAAADE!! *glomp!*

... *ahem* I just had to do that. (and for those that don't know, to
"glomp" someone is to tackle-hug them, so I'm told.)

Jim: glad to hear that Judy is improving.. let her know that you've got
friends who are thinking of and praying for her and hoping for the best!
*hug*

Oh during the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the theatre.. someone had a
fake hand on a stick that they kept sticking up to simulate grabbing or
rubbing or scratching (or SOMETHING that fake-hands-on-a-stick do)
various characters.. mayhap you could use that, Coops? ^___^

as for books.. I've just finished "Invisible Monsters" by Chuck Palahniuk
for the umpteenth time and am now reading a half-inch-thick romance book
by Nora Roberts. (her bigger-than-a-half-inch stuff is REALLY good.)

Bethey, good luck on that test. :D

quoth the Scotch: "$$$ Y Kant Tori Type digest $$$"
cuz she doesn't lurk the web like us floofy people?

and on that note, it's fucking 2AM and I shoulda been in bed four damn
fucking ass fuck hell damn shit cock damn hours ago. fuck. go see Rocky
Horror Picture Show. RHPS-era Tim Curry is fucking hot. (and the fucked
up thing about that is the man is my father's age. born the same year and
everything.) and I wanna be a sweet transvestite from Transsexual
Transylvania. :P

Subject: remotely interesting

First, a big "thank you" for those who sent birthday greetings.
I've been out of the loop here, dealing with--are you ready for
this?--remote controls. As in, one of those big chunky universal
remotes available from the local global chain electronics
maximegalomarts, usually called a One-For-All. Replacing my old one has
led me down the garden path, through dumpster diving, hardware hacking,
learning Windows 95 (fear and loathing time!), dealing with Microsoft,
and generally screaming and throwing things.
Why Windows at all? Because the tools for custom programming the
remotes are made for Windows, and only Windows. Macs don't have
parallel (IEEE 1284) ports.
Why such an old Windows? Because that's all I have available; it's
what came with my old copy of Virtual PC (3.0.3), so that's what I use
on this tired old Acer (a Pentium 120, but hey, at least it's got PCI)
I rescued.	It turns out there's a whole hacker subculture devoted
solely to not just remotes, but One-For-All remotes. The group is
called JP1 (it's on Yahoo), and just in case you're interested, go here

	http://www.hi-firemotes.com/jp1/

to find out more. Be prepared for maximum strength geekiness: these
people think nothing of programming in raw, unadorned hex, if need be
(yes, there's a real CPU in these remotes: it's a Motorola SC38).
At the moment I'm dealing with the problem of shredded registry files
in Windows. Oh, and I accidentally nuked the SYSTEM.INI file
(yikes--where's the backup tape? what do you mean, no DOS driver? don't
say the "r" word!). And when I get the PC working again, I then get to
deal with...misplaced keycodes in my VCR device upgrade file! (As for
adding the ability to control an HDTV, that'll just have to wait. For
an HDTV, that is. Assuming I get one, which is far from certain given
my distaste for TV generally.)
Thank goodness for Macintosh, and OS X Jaguar. In the entire time I've
been running it, it's only crashed once, and that during a storm (for
comparison, 9.1 wouldn't go more than about 36 hours without requiring
a reboot).
Oh, and for diversion I get to read about such stuff as wormholes,
quantum gravity, Higgs bosons, J.R.R. Tolkien's constant
crypto-Catholicism, and what makes Harry Potter's Firebolt go. Yahoo.
It's at least as much fun, and about as rewarding, as
(a) stapling jellyfish to the ceiling;
(b)	reading a VCR instruction manual in Elvish; or
(c)	dealing with politicians.
Would you like Freedom Fries with that, Senator?
	Estraven.
