I've never devoted a whole lot of thought to the Dalai Lama, but
there were two interesting articles about him in the New York
Times a couple of weeks ago.
One pointed out that the Lama presents a rather different set
of opinions to his Western supporters than he proclaims to the
faithful. For one thing, he condemns homosexuality, and oral and
anal sex, but these opinions are softened or eliminated
completely from his English-language writings (a condemnation of
homosexuality was removed from his most recent book at the
suggestion of his publisher).
This was not surprising, it fits in with the few things I've read
about Tibetan society. And I didn't get the idea that it was a
society which granted equal rights and opportunities to women, eiher,
even apart from the fact that all of the Dalai Lamas have
happened to be male.
But what bothered me more was another article in which the Lama
said that it was too early to tell if the US invasion of Iraq was
justified or not, that sometimes force is appropriate.
This surprised me, because I had understood that the Dalai Lama
was a pacifist. Now, as I've mentioned here before, I was raised
a Quaker, and I realized two things at that time. One was that
many people who say they are pacifists really aren't. They don't
like violence, which is not the same thing. The other thing was
that there are real pacifists, though not many, and they are
pretty extraordinary people.
Pacifists oppose war, and all violence, and (as it said in "Faith
& Practice") will not war with outward weapons. And I've met a
few, and they were sure that all problems should and could be
solved without violence. Not "all problems, except for Saddam,"
or "all problems except for Hitler," but all problems. Pacifists
(Quakers and others) have refused to fight in every war since
Quakerism was founded, and often went to jail for it.
(I'm not implying that Quakers created the idea of non-violence
or pacifism, far from it, I'm just less familiar with the earlier
history.)
To make it clear, I am not a pacifist. There are situations in
which I could and would be violent. But I have a lot of respect
for people who can live that way, and I don't like it when people
claim that's what they are, and then start to make exceptions and
qualifications, or they start to modify what they say depending
on who they're talking to.
If you're going to talk it, walk it.

Jessica-- I know that you may not want to run to the
authorities over the situation that happened in your
house, but you have to realize the consequences
otherwise. I'm sure you've already thought about
this, but just to scare it into you.....
1.) These people are totally abusing what your house
is about-- it's not about doing extremely illegal,
dangerous substances and expecting you to be okay with
that just because you're a fun-loving person. That's
just not cool of them to do.
2.) If it gets linked to your house, you could get
arrested.... especially since now it will become
harder to deny that you knew that something illegal
was going on.
3.) Most importantly-- If the one girl gets suicidal
after coming down from coke, it could be incredibly
dangerous for her one of these days. She has a
serious problem, and needs help. Anyone who seeks out
a substance after having negative consequences during
a prior experience is an addict. Not to mention the
fact that *anyone* who's doing it can O.D. A few
bloody tissues one time can turn into a lot more
bloody tissues next time.
You don't have to go directly to the police to have
something done with this. I'd suggest going to your
school's counseling services and asking for advice--
immediately!
Better to do it now than have it turn into a major,
serious problem.
Good luck... hope everything turns out okay...

One more thing about the coke situation.... if you
decide to go to the police after the fact, they can't
really do anything. The police actually have to catch
them in the act, or there's nothing they can do.

What's on the menu for female guests at the governor's residence in
California? Groper.
It's one of those times when you can truly utter the phrase, "Only in
America" and really mean it. What I can't believe is some want to change
the constitution to allow foreign nationals the right to run for president.
Hello? What happened last time a charismatic, expatriate Austrian led a
superpower?
At least we'll be free of dud movies for at least the next three years. You
wouldn't want to be a terrorist trying to hold a governor's conference
hostage now. I can hear it now, wafting across the floor, <Austrian accent>
"I'll break your back like a twig over my knee." </Austrian accent> Follow
that with the sound of a heavy machine gun being fired from one hand.

You seriously didn't fall for that, did you? While it's an inconvenience,
it's sure better to have to get patches and updates from Microsoft, so at
least you know of their integrity. I've never seen Microsoft actively send
any software and I don't think they ever will, considering how easy it is
to spoof addresses.
>As for the PC, I learned the only safe mail is webmail,
>because the PC version of Outlook insists on opening *everything*
Even webmail isn't really safe. My rule on Outlook is don't use it. Second
rule is don't use it. Third rule is if you have to, turn the preview pane
off or you're asking for trouble. Yet if you weren't running 95 and had
IE6, this wouldn't be an issue as it's too anal unless you turn the
security features off. I'm also yet to see a valid reason for having
Active-X turned on in Internet Explorer.
>I'm on my fifth reinstall of Windows 95A after less than a month
It's because you're using 95A. <Scottish accent> It's crap, I'm tellin' ya!
</Scottish accent> It's a dog - try 95B. There's an upgrade patch for 95A,
but it's not as good as the real thing. I managed to go 2.5 years on 95B
without a need for a reload. Same goes for Windows 98 - only use Second
Edition (SE) or higher.

>"Only 5 tracks on the DVD? Why bother? "
>
>Sound and picture quality? Maybe?
A single sided, single layered DVD will hold just over an hour of video and
audio at the highest encoding rate. At a standard encoding rate, you're
still looking at just over two hours of footage, which you can nearly
double if it's a dual layered disc.
That being said, we're being served up a DVD with 5 songs, plus a CD album?
All that could be put on a single DVD with room for more. We know Tori can
milk the length of live songs, but I can't see her dragging each song out
for 12 minutes. 5 tracks could easily be put on a video CD which can also
be played on a half decent computer with a CD-ROM drive and still have the
same quality as a standard VHS tape. Or why not release the album as an
audio DVD if quality is an issue?
I can only see "Tales of a Librarian" being purchased by hardcore fans and
collectors. If the price ends up being around US$40 like the collector's
edition of Scarlet's Walk was, it'll put it out of the price range of
anyone who's not fully into her music. It's almost an incentive to get the
new album via file sharing, considering there are so few new tracks. It
needs a "wow" factor to generate sales and the best thing I can think of is
a full length, full concert DVD. Wouldn't we all prefer that? Where can I
register my complaint? This is a case of marketing gone wrong, or even
consumer bastardisation.
Hmph.
Linda of the gyne...
>Coops-- so wait, this woman at the pharmacy was the little redhaired girl???
Uh huh! Though she wasn't the little red headed girl when I knew her as she
was taller than me then. Now she's at least 5 inches shorter, which is
another thing that threw me. I even went back there tonight looking for her
as it was the same weekday, but I guess she must work regular hours there,
so I'll either have to leave work early like that day or take a day off to
catch her. Considering how long it's been since I've shopped there during
regular hours, she must have seen me last a long time ago. Looks like I'll
be stocking up on a lot of items I don't really need until I find her again.
Would it be too forward next time I see her to ask what her favourite brand
of condom is?

Subject: muchos anger
Hola mes amies,
Ms. Jessica Parsons, I have read your post and now I feel righteously
angered on your behalf. Not angered, exactly. More like as pissed off as
a person can be without actually knowing another person but knowing their
situation. How's that?
Anyways, if someone finds just the eensiest bit of coke in _your_ room and
reports it, guess who'll be in trouble? Guess! That's right - you! Doing
drugs in your own place is one of the most selfish, uncaring, pathetic
things EVER because it'll get YOU in trouble. Sure, they're the ones who
did it, but that has to have been one of the rudest things I have ever
heard of a person doing. Because if they had been caught, or if their
drug-addled actions had led the authorities to you and your roommate's
room, then you would have suffered because of their actions.
And if doing coke makes her suicidal, why do it in the first place? I
mean, jeez! First they risk getting YOU arrested and then they experience
first hand why drugs are bad, bad things to mess around with and... I don't
even know how to finish that. I mean, my god. I would never do something
like cocaine. Ever. And to do it in a way that'll get someone else in
trouble...so disgustingly selfish.
And I know I don't know the situation and I don't know you and I don't know
all the different aspects to your life, but I read your post and I just had
to respond with my opinion, which is; if someone's doing something for
their own pleasure that could potentially hurt you, then that someone is
not your friend. Anyone who endangers anyone else with their own selfish
actions is not a friend.
I guess I feel so strongly about this because I sat back and watched a
friend of mine get screwed over again and again by her druggie friends
(amazingly screwed over, a kind of
what-the-hell-kind-of-human-being-are-you-to-do-this screwed over) and I
felt I couldn't do anything about it, because they were HER friends,
dammit, and not mine, and who was I to judge? But really, eventually she
learned just how bad it is to let herself be screwed over by people too
worried about their next high to care about her and so she stopped hanging
out with them and was better for it.
I'm sorry to be going on about this and I know, I know that I have no
business butting into your personal life, but really, your description of
what those girls did pissed me the hell off. Anyone who would bring an
illegal drug into another person's residence for their own pleasure and
risk having the owner of said residence ARRESTED for drug possesion is NOT
a friend. If someone did something like that to me, I'd call them a
selfish asshole and get on with my life without them. But I'm not you and
I don't know the whole story and I'm only reacting to what I read, so what
do I know, right?
Just my enraged personal opinion, is all. But really! Some people's kids
these days, I swear, they don't care for anyone other than
themselves...jeez.
...
...
...
In other news, I'm doing kinda bad in my creative writing class. Too many
assignments to keep track of, it seems. Damn.
Oh, and I'm writing a story. A good story. About a girl who discovers her
aunt has joined a new cult in exchange for unlimited plastic surgery and
free good-quality education for her son...but with a price. WheeeEEEEE!
Also, I have a new harddrive and I'm addicted to The Sims. Terribly
addicted. Not-do-my-homework-and-fail-my-creative-writing-class addicted.
So terrible.
