I haven't picked up the DVD, but did Tower have a "Parental Advisory" on the
copies they're selling? That kind of sucks, considering Tori drops the
occasional f-bomb during her shows...

Speaking of "Lord of the Rings" (seen "Meet the Feebles" and "Dead Alive"
yet?), the director of the new Harry Potter also directed "Y Tu Mama
Tambien" and "Amores Perros" (highly recommend both). Almost like having
Tarentino make a Disney movie with Harvey Keitel...

Pink Floyd... surprised you went with the Roger Waters stuff. Amused To
Death was kind of hard for me to listen to. However, I didn't like the
Berlin "Wall" stuff. But I've seen a 3 DVD bootleg box set of the videos in
a store yesterday that was pretty thorough. More Syd Barrett stuff seems to
have been unearthed recently, including the "American Bandstand" appearance
and "Jugband Blues" promo. But supposedly Nick Mason (the drummer) is
writing an authorized book about the band as well as a video which is likely
going to contain a lot of the videos. Also "The Wall" film footage from 1980
is rumored to being worked on for release next year. I've also heard 2
versions of "Comfortably Numb", one with Kate Bush and David Gilmour that
was left off his DVD (also recommended), and Roger and Don Henley doing the
same song (Don and Roger's version is as almost as awesome as Dave and
Roger)...

The Syd Barrett solo albums are wacky, but essential. Gilmour's "About Face"
and Roger's "Radio KAOS" are the better of the solo era. Rick Wright has
some jazz music out there as well...

I got it and have watched it once and listened to "Scarlet's Treasures"...

Subject: Another Bethey Update

So I met the "Turtle" guy on Saturday. In person, he looks like a super
muscular Bob Saget (that dude on America's Funniest videos or whatever it's
called)... in other words, he's awful purty. I've never gone for good
looking men, because it seems they are always so vain, but Paul (that's his
name) doesn't seem to be vain at all.

I'm really confused. You guys know that I haven't had an "intimate"
relationship with anyone for a decade. I haven't even kissed anyone (except
the Professor on the cheek). So I was not prepared for the extreme
chemistry that occurred on a handshake. I didn't think twice about giving
him a big hug. We went to have a drink and it didn't feel like a first
date. It felt like a long time relationship. We would each say something
that would make the other scream in delight, because no one else knows or
thinks these things (like my theory on infinity being unknowable to a finite
mind). Turns out he's an old stoner like I am and we took a drive and he
introduced me to his bong...The Turtle!!! Honest to goodness!

He leaned in to kiss me and before I knew what I was doing, we were making
out like a couple of horny teenagers. I kept pulling away to say, this is
our first date...we can't be doing this...before going back to making out.
I've never behaved that way in my life! But I didn't want to stop. How I
feel about the Professor spiritually, I feel about Paul physically. I want
to strip him down and sketch him because his body is so beautiful. But
there is more than the physical aspect. We connect really well mentally,
and both of us kept expressing relief at being with a contemporary...someone
who understands high school after Vietnam and before Reagan. Even odd ball
lyrics of songs popular back then.

So the confusion...He hasn't called. He hasn't emailed. I don't understand
it, but my daughter tells me it's part of the "rules"... never call the day
after or you seem obsessive. That seems utterly stupid to me. I don't like
games or "rules". What is wrong with just being honest? If you find
someone completely compatible and heavy chemistry, I'd think you'd do
whatever you need to in order to hold on.

I'm glad I had restraint and didn't go any farther than I did with him
(although way too far for a first date), because as is, I'm already feeling
a bit ashamed and cheap. It's like my body had a mind of it's own and I was
just along for the ride. Oh, well. I'll just have faith that if it's
supposed to be, it will be. I hope something does develop, because I
certainly never gave the Professor a single thought the whole time I was
with Paul. People were right...I needed to find someone to take his place
in my head and heart. Well, Paul isn't in my heart yet, but he's certainly
taken up residence in the core of me.

Nice to see RDT back on a regular basis.

Over the last few months there have been some young women start at work
that have really unusual names. The thing is, these names all remind me of
songs and I almost feel compelled to start singing, or at least whistling
the tune. It's a shame that they're mostly really bad songs I'm reminded
of. I think some parents have a lot to answer for in the naming of their kids.

Estraven wrote in the 1900th digest:
>In other words, my health care plan is:
>(1) Don't get sick.
>(2) If you do get sick, make sure you die right off.
>(3) Move to Canada.

That's pretty much my motto as well, except for the moving to Canada part.
Though considering the scandals of patient deaths in my local public
hospital, maybe that would be a good move.

> The drug companies will of course holler "development costs," but do
>we really need yet another blood pressure med, ADHD dope, or expensive
>aspirin substitute for arthritis? (Where's the AIDS vaccine?)

I'm also in agreement with the line you take here as well. I sometimes
wonder how drug companies actually formulate their development costs and
how they factor that into the price, considering they have a patent on what
they produce, so it's not like they can be ripped off until the patent runs
out. They probably make up their development costs 100 times over in that
period. They could also argue about covering the costs of failed drugs that
never make the market. Hmm... this could end up sounding like another
record company debate.

From a business perspective, there's more money in developing new
variants of blood pressure drugs, low dose aspirin and ADHD "dope" as you
call it, because they've got an ever expanding market that can actually
pay. Some of these failed attempts pay off in other ways, take Viagra as an
example (no, I'm not saying to actually *take* Viagra), as it was a failed
blood pressure drug that had interesting side effects. A new low dose
aspirin is not only good for arthritis but it also has other benefits, like
reducing blood clotting and lowering the incidence of heart disease. The
ever expanding market comes about from an ever aging population in Western
societies. You can put the research for new ADHD drugs into the same
category, as it seems any slightly aberrant youth (and some adults) these
days are diagnosed with the condition, so once again it's an expanding
market, and one the drug companies can milk for many years to come.

Now a vaccine for HIV/AIDS? There's a tough one. All along medical
researchers have been telling us it's a hard one to pin down. I can buy
that. Assuming they could come up with one that works, or even a cure,
where's the advantage in trying to sell it? It's only out of control in
third world societies that have no money to pay for it and the only way it
could ever get out there is for it to be heavily subsidised, which would
pressure companies to make it more cheaply. Where is the profit going to
come from in this instance? I could understand there being little
imperative to find a vaccine/cure.

I know this sounds incredibly cynical, but there have already been
instances of African nations screaming for drugs that reduce the onset of
full blown AIDS being made available at an affordable price but the Western
drug companies won't bargain.

>I fight terror every day. I don't watch Fox News ("Ein Volk! Ein
>Fuehrer! Ein NewsChannel!").

I can still remember watching it in a hotel room when I was last in the
U.S. in September 2002 and it was at that point I knew Iraq was going to be
invaded. I can't believe anyone can watch it, certainly not without being
corrupted by the constant propaganda.

> I do have HDTV now, with a grand total of two--okay, four--channels.
>Three of those are really the same channel

I must admit of the 50 or so channels I get, there's really only about a
total of 9. There's the 5 free to air ones, a few channels for watching
parliament and TVSN, like I want to buy their crap anyway. The rest of them
are multiple of the same, plus same again for the regionals. I am led to
believe however in the next couple of months those extra channels will be
utilised for things like different camera angles in sport. I still can't
watch it though. I did buy a line filter but I realised I need another for
the amplifier so I haven't bothered to do anything about it yet. Besides,
there's nothing worth watching anyway.

>Speaking of PBS, did anyone watch Frontline's "The Way The Music Died"?
>While there wasn't as much 'forensics' as I would have liked, there were
>several factors cited: Demographic shifts. MTV. Media consolidation.
>Retail consolidation. Record company greed. Illegal downloads. All of the

Don't start me on the music industry again! Someone actually said to me
yesterday they don't see many people in CD stores these days. The factors
cited above are the ones I've been pushing for years. I bought my first CD
of the year on Monday. I haven't been downloading anything, I just haven't
been interested in what I've been hearing and that's been the case for a
few years now. I blame that solely on the consolidation of the record
companies a few years back, where they cut so many artists from their roster.

>The careers of two recording acts were followed: Sarah Hudson,
>singer/songwriter daughter of record producer (and former Hudson Brother)
>Mark Hudson, and Velvet Revolver, a hybrid of many former G'n'R and STP
>members. Guess which one got the heavy rotation and made #1 on the charts.

Funny you mentioned Velvet Revolver, as it was their CD I bought. It's a no
brainer to guess VR were the ones to make it, as the industry will only put
money into bankable names and you've got to admit the Velvet Revolver is
very bankable compared to someone you've never heard of, regardless of
their talent. For the record, I'm beginning to wish I hadn't bought that CD
as Scott Weiland's voice is buried in the production which is criminal
considering he has a great rock voice.

Kerri wrote:

I had a guy tell me about his experience with it when it first became a
fad. He had 15 in one night and when he was at home lying in bed he thought
he was going to die, his heart was fluttering so fast. I've heard stories
of people who have drunk less and died, so it was lucky this guy was super
fit to start with. I won't even touch those super caffeinated drinks as I
can barely handle a can of cola.

Back to John and the health topic:
>Well, the major issue isn't the amount of profit, it's the way those
>profits are obtained. Drug companies spend a fortune cozying up to
>doctors, taking them out to dinner (seducing them, basically) in an effort

One thing I can guarantee is that when I walk into a doctor's surgery, I'll
see things like pens and pads with the names of medications on them. Over
the years I have had doctors give me sample packs of drugs. Actually, that
has been a problem for some doctors as they have been known to start taking
and become addicted to the samples. You can't really blame the doctors
though as they've only got so much time to read the latest medical journals
and nobody in their right mind would knock back a free lunch, although
those are never truly free.

I actually have a mild dose of the flu at the moment and the doctor
prescribed me an antibiotic and told me to take Nurofen. Chemists are
compelled here to ask if you want a cheaper alternative for prescription
medications and unless it's something unusual, you're silly not to take up
the offer as the chemicals are identical. As for the Nurofen, if I'd asked
for it by name they would have to sell it to me, but I can get generic
ibuprofen for less than half the cost of the name brands and they all do
exactly the same thing with the same dosage.

Man, I've been babbling. I guess it must be the drugs.

Well, if y'all remember, I'm one of those loud socialist Canadians who
float around from time to time.

Seeing some pics on BBC news online of Nancy Regan - I remember some
things. I also think she cared VERY deeply for her husband, but that's
neither here nor there....

Regan won the war between USA and USSR - with "Star Wars" but also other
things. The cold war DID end because of things he did.
Unusual character.
Definitely a "republican" (roman?) type. Seems pretty good in
after-the-fact. Decidedly comedian-friendly too, which as a Canadian I
applaud. ANY leader of a country should be easy to make farces of.
Otherwise what's the point, right?

Anyways.
A good man was lost.

There have been many losses - but those who represent us, should also
carry great respect. Especially if they can represent us.

Regan represented many things I don't agree with - but he was still a very
good president.

I know this is decidedly non-Tori of me *giggle* (historian *giggle*
too... feel free to ask :)

G'day, eh? :)
