X PRIZE WON! Now let's see who wins next year.... Another step closer to
a BIG step... *humm* step by step the longest march...
from Roxanne Rieske:
I'm gonna guess Tori doesn't feel like managing a record company and would
rather just play and travel and see the occasional human. She DOES have her
own recording studio though... from what I remember from past news here *g*.
Off in the middle of nowhere so the record company execs have to WORK to see
her. Ahh I like the sound of that....
PS: anyone seen a useful job floating around for someone who's worked with
both computers and electronics and has interests in exploring international
business and communications? I'm on a weird bent... and I've just
discovered if you can speak and read 5 or more languages you can get into
international business programs... well, theoretically anyways. I should
research this *G*
Suffice to say I'm dreadfully tired of working in a moldy basement.
Anyways.
*switch topics*
Simon Says the List is Mother, the List is Father and made a couple of
comments that I couldn't help but answer *G*
PS: wouldn't it be fun to wear one of those uniforms? Perhaps a little tiny
fairie as a 'logo'...
On North Korea - talk to some folks from there one of these days. Find out
what life's like, and opinions on politics.
An example from here - Paul Martin's a collossal fool of a prime minister.
Good at finances, not good at running things. But international press makes
him look -good-. When you want to find out what someone's really like talk
with folks that have to deal with it...
Last I heard, the current heads of North Korea are kinda popular in the
country there.... but it's been a while since I last talked with anyone.

Sounds like fun. Ahhh for the nice days of running through the woods
naked... I heartily recommend it to anyone as long as they have nice
friendly woods (or nice fences to hide the nosy neighbours)
Well, watching out for brambles anyways.
Completely agree here. Actually, that's largely how Canadian law works for
artistic freedom - except they err on the side of "artistic freedom" than
"protection of people". I think consent laws should also apply to artistic
public displays. (long story)

400 pounds of weight in something never stopped my from carrying anything
before. I CAN handle it. It's just ouchy and hard to put on top of a car
or truck. Carrying it longer than about a meter or so would be difficult.

> *** What Was The Best Thing BEFORE Sliced Bread? digest ***
Oh, that's easy. Well okay maybe not. One of the best things AFTER sliced
bread is Tori of course. But I think I'll cop out and go with the easy
answer:
sex
It's of course the best thing not (usually) involving sliced bread too.
Actually rather a lot of things are better than sliced bread.
I mean, just sticking with the -bread- theme, let alone wandering off topic
entirely, there's nothing like the wonderful taste of a broken hunk of
freshly baked french bread, dipped in butter with (perhaps) some tea on the
side.
Nothing like it at all.
It's LOTS better than sliced bread.
G'day, eh? :)
- Winterlion / Teunis / someone / maybe.
PS: Wasn't kidding about the job thing. I really am looking for something
new. And quite willing (and able) to relocate. *G*. Okay, still being
random.
PPS: Ahh.. Pretty good year.

Yes, I have to agree. I haven't listened to the CD more than a few times
since I got it, which is sad. It's so slick, it doesn't stick. On the
other hand, I've been grooving on some really embarrassingly glammy hair
metal from the 1980s, but tempering it with lots of Slayer and Megadeth.
(I know, I know, some of you are saying, "what's the difference?")
Which reminds me, has anyone read "Hell Bent for Leather" yet? I'm dying
to.

Subject: We won't get fooled again
Yeah, right!
Haven't I already used that subject? Well, if you've been paying attention
to the Australian election results you would have noticed the incumbent
government was returned with an increased majority. Up to 3 more years of
little Johnny. It also looks like they'll have control over both houses of
parliament which is something that hasn't happened in a very long time. I
shudder to think what policies are going to get rammed through in the next
year, just because they can.
This election was supposed to be too close to call until the last couple of
days but in reality it was almost a landslide. Apart from people being so
stupid they believed the government's lies, the main thing that worked in
their favour is that the economy is sound and people are just doing too
well as a whole to get truly upset. That is not the case for the upcoming
U.S. election, where the economy is virtually in tatters and there is also
the issue of Iraq. If John Kerry really wants to win he should push hardest
on those fronts.
My mother still swears I played with the Prime Minister's kids when I was a
kid myself. I still have no recollection of this but she says she has
photos somewhere so I'll only believe it if I see it. It's possible for the
fact my godmother was his secretary for 20 years, but I think his kids are
still too young for that.
Apart from the election, it was my 20 year high school reunion. Fascinating
night. We all got a taste for it in the days before as people submitted
bios of where they were and what they were doing. It did save a lot of time
catching up but there was still a lot of, "How are you?", "Where do you
work?", "Are you married/do you have kids?". It would have been quicker if
we'd all been wearing signs with these details. But after a few hours
everyone seemed to slip back into the old patterns. I also had a few
uncomfortable moments where I'd see people starting at me. It was sort of a
combination of the bio I submitted that was vague and enigmatic, but mainly
because they thought I was the least changed outwardly. I though it was
because of the tomato stain down the front of my shirt.
Like at the 10 year reunion, I had more fun talking to those I didn't
really know back then. I talked to one woman who was really bitter for half
an hour as her story was compelling, but also because she saw things for
what they were back then and how stupid it all was at the time. Also spent
a good deal of time talking to a woman I barely recognised and found her
fascinating. I had no idea she'd been expelled at the time.
Probably the weirdest moment of the night was when a couple of stoners were
trying to outdo each other on how stoned they were back then. The
conversation went on for about 15 minutes and just kept circling. They
seemed to have no idea they went over the same points time after time. One
of the participants in this conversation was a woman who as a teenager
launched 1000 wet dreams for me. She was also the town bike (everybody had
a ride), so the one time she hit on me I rejected her which made her
furious. A couple of days after that she berated me in front of her friends
to the point where her friends were defending me. So apart from her body, I
didn't have any fond memories of her. So imagine my surprise when she
actively seeks me out to ask me a question. No, it wasn't about that
episode. She was saying to all and sundry that she was a bitch back then
and she had mellowed considerably. She's also single again though I
wouldn't dare go there. She's had two partners die on her and all I can
think is "black widow spider".
As a whole it was great fun and apart from the obvious physical
differences, people were still basically the same, just a lot more mellow.
There was no end of fascinating stories and a lot of people I could hardly
recognise. There's also plans for a barbie in November so it'll be a repeat
performance, but more family friendly.
I was thinking about some replies to digest 1921 but it's stuff we've
already been over, though I think it's the first time I've been mentioned
in the same sentence as Bush. You do stoned frogs a great disservice, Estraven.

Frank Zappa used to do this also, and Robert Fripp, too. Both had
their own labels. I think it's a really good idea. It feeds the
fanatacism of your hard core fans without affecting the more casual
fans at all.

Well, they did change the bomb-making instructions in "Fight Club" when
they
made the movie so that nobody could actually use them to make explosives.
> WHY were "Ulysses" and "Naked Lunch" banned?? I mean seriously, what the
> fuck!?
The main reason "Ulysses" was banned was that mature female sexuality
freaks a lot of people out (then and now). The final chapter of "Ulysses"
is stream of consciousness, the thoughts of Molly Bloom as she lies in
bed beside her husband and reviews the events of her day, and of her
life. It is very frank (though not deliberately erotic) about sexuality,
about bearing children and about anatomy. These things were not portrayed
in fiction at that time in history (not counting pornography, which was
an illegal but flourishing industry at the time).
Secondarily, the book itself is very matter of fact about bodily functions.
Leo Bloom starts his day by going to the outside privy and taking a shit
(he brings a magazine to read, and uses a page to wipe himself). He
masturbates
on the beach when he catches a glimpse up a girl's skirt. And he and
Stephen Dedalus end their night of carousing by taking a leak (against the
side of a building, I believe). These things were not mentioned in serious
fiction at that time. Even now, most fiction elminates the elimination (I
confess, I follow this tradition myself).
"Naked Lunch" is profoundly and deliberately provocative and offensive,
and some of the bodily functions it portrays are not actually possible.
And much of the sexual activity it portrays is between men. And it
describes drug use (both possible and impossible) without the
"appropriate" condemnation. In the 1950s, in this country, this
was not really acceptable, especially when combined with Burroughs'
disdain for mainstream American life, and his hatred for control and
authority.
Winterlion said:
> (I learned how to hold my violin correctly *g*)
Hey, hold it however suits you. I remember a country fiddler named
Doug Kershaw who played realy great, while his fiddle seemed to
wander all over, probably never approaching the correct position.
Some people wear their electric guitars down around their knees,
some wear them up around their nipples, and some even sit down.
Some hold them backwards, for that matter. Dizzy Gillespie got his
trumpet broken once so that the bell pointed up at a 45 degree angle,
and he discovered that he likes it better, so for the rest of his
life he had all his trumpets bent that way.
Your batting stance isn't wrong if you hit a home run (baseball
reference, sorry).
As B/4,
John

about tori's forthcoming record in his latest journal entry...
<url:
http://www.neilgaiman.com/journal/2004/10/ups-and-downs-on-puddly-day.asp >
Neil-So the general consensus among the Tori community is that the
album is coming out mid-February, which would mean that SOMETHING
should leak by now?Have you heard any of it? Anything about it? At all?
Is there anything Tori would let you tell us? Because neither the music
press nor Epic is spilling anything, and you know how much we love
reading your reviews. :)
I'm like everyone else outside of that Cornwall house, including all
the people at Epic Records. None of us have heard anything of the
actual album yet -- Tori's playing this one really mysterious and
extremely close to her chest. She played me seven unfinished songs,
last Winter solstice, when I stayed over in Cornwall, and I thought
they were very fierce and beautiful; then she called me a couple of
months ago to check a few things about Melusine, and sang me the
song in which she appears (but has also just told me that that song
won't be on this album, and actually is for the one after). She
seems to be enjoying having a really intimate relationship with the
music. ("We're still dating," she told me. "Going out for coffee
together. Just the two of us.") But she's promised that I'll hear it
before the next Winter solstice, and I'm very happy to wait and
see.
