The list has been pretty quiet over the last few months, which is why
the digests are going out so infrequently. Currently, digests go out
once they reach a certain size.

I expect things will speed up when the new album comes out.

In the meantime, I'm going to try to put digests out even when there's
only one posting. Maybe that will facilitate discussion a bit more.

We need a good topic to get us all going. Thoughts on the upcoming
album, perhaps? Or maybe New Year's resolutions? Or "What I Did For
My Christmas Vacation"? Or even "Over The Holidays, I *Watched*
'Christmas Vacation'"?

Subject: At the Close of the Year

Greetings All,

It's that time of year for reflection, so excuse me if I reflect all over
you. First, upon reflection, I'm starting off the new year by flying US Air
out of Philadelphia, so this may be the last time you ever hear from me. I
keep having visions of being held hostage by the baggage carousel and
completely flipping out and then being sent to Gitmo for terroristic
threats. At least I'm pretty sure I'm off the no-fly list (thank you Ted
Kennedy), and I don't have to worry about my chest being hand-searched (two
other things I'd flip out about). If you don't know what I'm doing or where
I'm going, you should go to my web page and you will then know. :)

OK, I'm gonna get serious here, so sit back and relax.

The year closes with the tsunami in SE Asia. After my class in Religions of
SE Asia, I feel a little more connected with the area. I also feel the
media is handling it all wrong. The close-up's of the dead bodies will only
turn the American audience off after a while. More focus should be put on
the survivors and those helping the survivors. I saw a couple of Buddhist
monks walking around with incense where the pictures of victims had been
posted. That's what I want to know about, how they are responding, the
locals; not the tourists and their stories (which all sound the same after a
while). Seeing fat, white tourists sitting on the beaches while devastation
surrounds them truly bothers me. Whatever prayers you may say, say them for
the people of the tsunami. Send your energy to them, and if you can afford
it, send some money to a Hindu or Buddhist relief organization. Those are
the people who know how to distribute it, since they work with those areas
all the time.

Not even a tsunami could kick Iraq off the news. As elections approach, the
violence is increasing. The interim government is threatening a "National
Holiday" for the week of elections. This is a euphemism for Martial Law and
curfews. I don't understand how an election can be called valid if it is
held under martial law, enforced by an occupying power. However, I also
don't understand how 1300 soldiers can die in the Iraqi desert for no good
reason at all. Why does our government feel it has a right to remake the
world in it's own image? It sounds like we think we are God. I can only
wonder how many resources we would have to help out the victims of the
tsunami if we didn't have all of our resources wrapped up in fighting a
battle than can not be won (unless we nuke them into pacification...but I
shouldn't give George any ideas...).

I am very hopeful about America's political future. Over the period of the
Presidential Election, I saw many people gain an insight into how important
it is to be involved with voting, and activism. I really think that this
could be a lasting change for the better. If everyone got involved, things
could change so fast. It is up to the young to save our world, I trust you
can do it. All those who look at the direction we are going and think it is
wrong, you can change things. It will take time, a lot of time for a long
time, but with work and patience, you can do it. The world is crying out to
evolve out of the chaos it is in. We can do it, we can help the evolution.
We are so stagnant now, we don't know what forward momentum can do. Let's
find out in the coming year.

I started this year off being pitied by a bar staff and swearing I would no
longer be alone. Now I'm not alone and I couldn't be happier. I've had the
best Christmas ever, and am going to fulfill a dream next week. I'm a
lucky, lucky girl to have found Henry. I've never been treated so well for
so long. In six months, we've yet to have a fight. We can trust and rely
on each other, and we appreciate each other. That's the secret you
know...being totally honest and trustworthy. It makes relationships last
for eons. Try it, you'll see. Just resolve to never tell a lie, and never
break trust. See, if everyone did that, many universal problems would
simply disappear.

I'm looking forward to 2005. If it's half as good for me personally, it'll
be wonderful. Politically, I have hope that America will behave herself and
stop being such a bad bully. Globally, I hope every person will understand
that violence never solved anything, and many more turn to peace.

You all be peaceful yourselves. That's how we change the world...one person
at a time.

Peace on Earth, Good Will to All,
Peace be with You,
Bethey

Subject: sad news.

hello. normally i lurk in here. but i just had to write a small comment of
suggestion in response to sending cards and letters to tori and her family.
while i am sure tori and her family have appreciated the outpouring of
sympathies from caring ewf, i cannot help but emphasize how it would matter
even more if everyone who sent them cards and letters also take a moment to
make a donation to RAINN in her brother's memory. given the current social
and political climate here in the u.s., i forsee in the future that RAINN
will be needed and used more than ever imagined, so it is crucial that the
funds for their life-saving work keep coming to them.

i know we are sick and tired of hearing about the importance of donating to
RAINN, but most of its funding is dependent on help from the general
public--most especially you, me, and anyone else you know who cares enough
to spend a few spare $ to help this important cause. remember the challenge
tori made to us last summer? let's keep it going to an amount above and
beyond her challenged goal (about $50,000, if i recall) shall we?

food for thought,
lorna
