Subject: Yes Virginia, butterflies do sleep, sort of...

*peeps her head out of her serious lurkdom*

I found myself listening to many different versions of "Butterfly" tonight,
and the new "Sleeps with Butterflies" quite a few times, when the question
of "do butterflies sleep?" popped into my head...so a googling I went...and
this is what I found.

Maybe it will spark (no pun intended, honest! :P) a discussion of
butterflies sleeping habits and how that relates the new album
and the mental/emotional/psychological space Tori is in these days.

Or not. (:

Thank you for considering my question. I'm Brittany Runyan from Greeley

if so where? Thank you for your answer.

Hi, Brittany. The short answer to your question is: sort of. Butterflies
need the sun's warmth to keep them active, so at times when the sun isn't
shining, they close their wings and rest. This resting state is sort of like
sleep, but it's more like just being really tired. When they're resting,
butterflies usually don't move around, but they can if they need to. They
also don't need to eat as often in this resting state. When the sun comes
out, their bodies warm up and they fly off looking for food again.

The other part of your question is: where do they rest? Since there are a
lot of birds and bats that would love to eat a resting butterfly, they need
to pick a pretty well-hidden place. Many butterflies rest on the bark of a
tree. The rough surface of the tree helps them blend in and makes them
harder to spot. Another favorite place is on the underside of leaves.

I hope this answers your question!

Where do butterflies sleep?
To go to sleep, butterflies look for a safe place like the underside of a
leaf or a branch, for example.

Most butterflies sleep alone, but there are also species sleeping in groups.
Poisonous butterflies have a particular smell that probably protects them
better when they sleep together. It is also useful not to change the group's
sleeping place because a predator who attacked a poisonous butterfly one
time won't do this again. There is only a limited number of predators in
an area so there is only a limited number to "educate" if the sleeping place
stays the same.

One species from Costa Rica whose scientific name is "marpesia berania" sleeps
in groups on a leaf. If one butterfly of the group is disturbed, it opens
its wings and touches its neighbors. Being touched, they open their wings as
well and so the whole group is informed about the danger and can escape
together.

Q36: Do butterflies sleep or take brief naps? What is sleep to a butterfly?

A36: When butterflies cannot keep their temperatures at activity levels,
when its cloudy, or at night they become quiescent. This quiescence, or
resting, is not equivalent to human sleep. Butterflies always have their
eyes open, since they do not have eyelids and they probably do not dream.
Certainly, I don't know of anyone who has heard of a snoring butterfly! It's
probably best just to consider that they become inactive.

Oh, and here is a question about both butterflies AND bees:

Q25: How do butterflies communicate? Is it like honeybees?

A25: Butterflies do not communicate like honeybees but they use some of the
same kinds of communication. Butterflies can communicate with each other
[same or different species] by color, chemicals, sound, and physical
actions. Color patterns are used to signal their sex or species to each
other. Chemical pheromones are used by both sexes of some butterflies to
attract the opposite sex or to signal species identity in courtship. A few
butterflies make clicking sounds [males of genus Hamadryas] to protect their
space. Some chrysalids [gossamer wings family] make clicking sounds to
attract ants that in turn protect them. Physical actions such as aggressive
flight or postures are used in courtship or to protect resources such as an
important flower.

Also, they are important as plant pollinators, second only to the
bees. They also are very sensitive to the environment and thus are good
indicators in assessing how healthy or unhealthy conditions are.

Randomly yours,
DragonGirl
