Subject: please tell me why Tori Amos doesn't suck.
okay, so...
what the hell happened to this list? where is everyone?
oh, right...listening to Tori's crap new album, and buying overpriced
tickets to her shows, and then bitching on all the tour lists that i so
unfortunately still belong to about how the presales suck. yeah,
newsflash...the presales have always sucked. cry me a river.
back in April, after listening to The Beekeeper exactly three times (2
and a half of those were utter disbelief that Tori could actually put
out something so...safe), i sat down and started writing a post to this
list about why i thought The Beekeeper sucked. it had many excellent
points, and maybe if i whip up enough lather with this post, i'll
actually dust it off and post it. but yeah...the album does, for the
most part, suck. so much so that when i moved from Philadelphia to
Houston, Texas, earlier this week, i didn't even bring it with me. i
even forgot to put it on my iPod.
and so now i'm pissed, all of a sudden, after watching the "sweet the
sting" video, with the realization that a) nothing she's doing right
now, musically, visually or otherwise is interesting or original, and
that b) the tori community has, as it usually does, swallowed this
album of dreck with raves and rounds of applause. i'm not expecting you
all to be bastions of criticism, but let's call a spade a spade, shall
we?
i guess i'm angry, very angry right now, because i feel her music
slipping away from me, slowly joining the ranks of I Couldn't Give a
Fuck. i'm sad because, in the eleven years since i've been a fan, Tori
Amos has inspired me in my work, both in method and result, perhaps
more than any musician i can think of.
and sure, i can look back at all the albums i like, and listen to them
with sadness and nostalgia, mixed with the bitter knowledge that there
just may be nothing more like that coming out of her. i mean, can you
imagine Tori producing something as brave as Boys for Pele now? i know
that album obviously came from a place that she is no longer in (and
probably doesn't want to be), but what happened to all that talk of the
"passion of married life"? where is the anger and beauty and tragedy of
the betrayal that The Beekeeper is supposedly about? i don't find it
anywhere in these mid-tempo'ed, boring and frequently trite songs. i
wish i could, but i don't.
so, arty turners, prove me wrong. change my mind. say something, for
godsakes. i'm sick of getting digests once a month full of news items
from woj.
your exodus fucking pissed off,
-bethany

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh If I were a rich girl! Na na na na na na na na na na
na na na na NAAAAA, I'd have all the diamonds in the world! If I were a
wealthy girlllllll....
Wow. Hyper. Very very hyper. Because I haven't done ANYTHING this entire
day.
I am now in that state of my life between college and employment. Boo hoo
hoo.
Stupid creative writing degree. Can't find anything to do with it, even
though I love writing and editing and more editing and writing and words
and linguistics and more words and writing and editing and sigh...
Anyone know any vacant spots for wannabe college grad editors? I actually
applied to a job in New Jersey today. New Jersey! The land of pollution
and attitudes. I'd never fit in!
Is there a state for crazy, silly people who love writing? If so, I wanna
live there and make lots of friends so we can all play DDR together. And
sing badly. And complain about our jobs, not because they suck, but
because we love them and don't want to be left out of the crowd of people
who complain about their jobs professionally.
In Tori-related news, I was watching VH1's list of top child stars the
other day and they were playing Cornflake Girl in the background of one of
the star's stories, which made me happy. Go Tori go!
Also, anyone watch Nip/Tuck? They played "A Sorta Fairytale" in the
background of an extremely poignant scene in which every single main
character's plans fell apart all around them. Such a cool show. Too bad I
missed practically every single episode of season 2.
What's up with the quiet issues, recently? Speak! Speak! What
interesting and intoxicating new lifestyles/shows/adventures/musical
performances/books/friendships/tennis shoes have you all had, recently?
I got the coolest pair of shoes ever for six bucks at Eckard the other day.
They're just like sneakers, only they have buttons on the side of the
soles. Whenever you press the buttons, ROLLER SKATES POP OUT OF THE
BOTTOMS!
HOW COOL IS THAT!?!?!
...Except I can't roller skate worth a darn, but I WILL! Dammit! I SHALL
PERSERVERE!
Okay, less hyper now. Trying to be, at least.
Editing jobs, ou etes vous?
I need to bone up on my french. And Korean. Because Korean is more
awesome than French, but damn harder to learn. Any Korean Toriphiles? If
so, annyonghashimnikka! Or however the romanized version of it goes.
How Now, Brown Cow?
