This is in regards to the slamming Bethany did about Toris album.. Everyone
is absolutely entitled to their opinion... Is the Beekeeper like Little
Earthquakes... NO... WHY Tori is at a different stage in her life... she is
not angry and hurt and searching... now it seems she is HAPPY.. and a ver
dedicated mother... As a true Tori fan I would expect that you would be
happy for her growth. You dont have to love everything an artist turns out,
and sometimes albums are not what you expect. Sometimes they are not like
anything else the artist has put out in the past, but that is due to growth
and changes in ones life. I think Tori is writing what is going on in her
life now maybe in some peoples eyes she has not hit her artistic abilities,
I beg to differ. Just because someone changes it up a bit and tones things
down doesnt mean the album sux. In your eyes yes.. you are entitled to
your opinion.. I however beg to differ. Is this album different YES, does it
suck I think not. "TORI" is still there, this album is just at a different
level.
Just an opinion from a very dedicated open minded fan.
Rikki

Subject: response to Bethany
Hi. Some of you may remember me. I was an active member once, but I've been
lurking for awhile now. This will not be a major delurk - I'll try to do
one soon - but I did want to respond to Bethany's screed against The
Beekeeper. In particular, I wanted to respond to her attack on those who
don't agree with her opinion of Tori's new work.
Just to let you know how I feel about the album, it's not one of my
favorites of hers. Some of the songs I like, others not so much. (Indeed,
one problem with the album is that it's way too long.) However, I reject
the notion that she's gone soft; Scarlet's Walk is pretty much tied with
Pele as my favorite album of hers. And I thought her shows on the first leg
of the tour were first-rate, and I very much look forward to the shows I'm
seeing next month. (Which, incidentally, I don't find to be "overpriced" at
all, at least not in comparision to other artists of her stature.) So, no,
I personally don't find her music to be "slipping away from me".
And Bethany, if you disagree with me, that's fine. Many people I know and
respect do indeed feel that Tori is no longer making music that speaks to
them. However, these people don't see fit to essentially say that those who
disagree with their OPINION of Tori's music have something wrong with them.
I am not, to my mind, "swallow(ing)...dreck". Remember, "The Emperor's New
Clothes" is a fairy tale. This is real life, where intelligent people can
disagree, especially over something as subjective as musical taste.
So, yeah. If you hate her new music, that's fine. If you feel betrayed by
her, also fine. But don't make assumptions about those of us who might
disagree with you, OK? We're not fairy-wing wearing sycophants just because
we don't share your disillusionment.

hmmm...something tells me that whatever I say isn't going to make any
difference to you...but might as well put in my two cents.
I don't find Tori's work, nor TBK in particular, unoriginal or
uninteresting, for a couple of reasons:
1) I think her voice is as strong as ever, and in some cases even better
and stronger.
2) The songs, although no longer about personal tragedy and angst, are
now delving beneath the surface of what is actually going on with
humanity and society. Which I find fascinating. TBK is full of mythology
and questions and speculations on humanity and society in general. It's
fascinating to me because that's the kind of stuff I care about. I
appreciate how Tori thinks, and her views on what is going on in the
world around her are right in my line of sight as well.
3) The sound of her music is changing and evolving over time. It's not
crap; it's different. So you don't like it. Fine. But I enjoy it; I
don't find her comparable to anybody else and all of her songs and
albums are different from one another. But this is coming from me: a
person who appreciates, enjoys, and listens to a wide range of musical
styles from jazz, to blues, to gospel, to country, to punk rock, and
alternative rock. I like all of it, so nothing Tori does is ever
distasteful to me. And I have always found her work with piano and
piano-like instruments to be above par and always reaching new ground. I
love the organ on this album; it fits right in.
4) I appreciate the fact that she isn't in the place she was in 10-15
years ago. I would be seriously raising my eyebrows if, at almost 45
years of age, she was still putting out the same music. I would be the
one raging on with questions of, "Is she EVER going to anything
different?" But that's just me. I get really tired of artists whose
music doesn't change.
Tori's music has simply evolved to a sound that you don't personally
enjoy. There's nothing wrong with that, but there are many of us who
enjoy different musical styles and are more than willing to hang out
with Tori's sound. However, I really resent you saying that some of us
are lapping this up just because it's Tori. That's a potshot that's
uncalled for.
