Subject: Other music
What music have you guys been listening to, while not listening to the
Beekeeper?
I've been listening a whole lot to three albums lately:
Mediaeval Baebes, "Mirabilis" -- this just came out, and it's divine.
It's more polished than their previous albums, making me wonder how they
could perform some of it live. They do a gorgeous, gorgeous version of
"Scarborough Fair" that I can't stop humming.
Nevermore, "Once" -- fun, squealy operatic metal from a Finnish group.
This album was recorded with a full symphony, which makes the music that
much more lush and amazing. I get goosebumps from a lot of these songs.
System of a Down, "Mesmerize" -- I like about half this album and other
half drives me nuts. Which half varies from day to day. I love the
music, but sometimes wish there was more substance.

Good idea.

In general, not to be flip, depression is one disease that if you think
you have it, you probably do.
(The exception is when something actually bad has happened and you're
feeling bad about that. That's not depression, that's normal human
sadness, and it's right to feel that.
One of the most helpful things I read after September 11th was something
listing symptoms and feelings which I was feeling, and it said, "If you
went through 9/11 and you're feeling like this, this is not a disorder,
this is the normal and appropriate reaction to what you've gone through.
If you still feel the same way, just as strongly, six or nine months or a
year later, this may be a disorder."
It's a terrible thing to say to people that they should "get over it and
move on," but that is part of what we do. I get a little upset on the
anniversary of 9/11/01, but it's not like living through it again.
Anyway, this is a bit of a digression, but the point is that your anger at
the person who lied to you and betrayed your trust is not a disorder, but
it has to be separated out from the depression and anxiety, which I know
can be difficult.)
From my experience, the first thing to do is to realize that you do have
an illness, and you can do a lot about it yourself. I'm not saying that
there's no value to professional assistance (I wouldn't know, my health
insurance isn't much better than none), but in a lot of cases it's not
necessary. And the point is that everything doesn't depend on being able
to afford and get professional help.
For example, there are various prescription drugs which are used for
depression, but I've read recently that herbal supplements can be as
effective (though they don't show effects as quickly, so some people try
them and then give up).
Typical of the medical industry to focus our attention on prescription
drugs, dismiss any other alternatives, then make it impossible for us to
*get* those prescription drugs because we can't afford them.
The supplements I take are St. John's Wort and Omega-3 oil, and they do
help, but the single biggest thing I've found is getting regular
exercise. Doesn't have to be strenuous, 20-30 minutes of walking (at a
good pace but nothing crazy) is fine. But it does help, and I really miss
it when I don't get it.
Again, it doesn't take effect immediately, but it helps and it helps
pretty quickly.
Do a google search for Andrew Weil, he has a lot of useful information.
> many of my friends on my LiveJournal have encouraged me
> to keep searching for answers and asking questions.
Very good advice. One of the problems with depression is that it focuses
our attention on our insides and not on the rest of the world, and the
rest of the world is pretty much the best reason to solve this problem and
keep going,
> they never expected sweet little me to have such violent
> and angry thoughts.
Friends and family, who should know us best, frequently put us into a box
or a category, and not realize or admit that, as the man said, under the
right circumstances, anybody is capable of feeling or doing pretty much
anything.
> I've done my best with some editing to trim it down
> size-wise, but not content-wise.
Long posts are never a problem unless they're boring (which yours
certainly isn't) or if they're boring articles re-posted from somewhere
else.
There's a lot I could say about the various points you make, but what
counts isn't whether you're right or wrong (and mostly I think you're
right), it's that you're depressed and anxious. Once you make some
progress in solving that, then you can start to figure out the other
questions (which will be a life-long process, I realize).
> why am I even so irritable in the first place? it can't
> just be hormones. I don't give a shit what people say,
There is a huge and well-documented history of women's illnesses (of all
sorts) not being taken seriously by the medical industry. Not that there
aren't any good doctors, there are, but you aways have to do your own
research and make your own decisions. And fight for your symptoms to be
taken seriously even when they're being dismissed as hormones (or some
other girly stuff like that).
My mother reports the same thing, plus a lot of things get written off to
her being old (89), and she has to fight for them to be taken seriously
for that reason ("it can't just be age, I didn't feel like this *last*
week, and I was old last week, too!").
Roxanne said:

An interesting discussion to have, though, since I tend to agree, but I
don't have any information to back me up except personal and anecdotal
experience. And I'm reluctant to be too ardent about any opinions which
Tom Cruise also holds, at least without evidence.
It's like my father used to say about Nixon, when he says something you
agree with, you start to question yourself and think you might be wrong
after all.
As B/4,
John

Subject: A ToriStory
Yo Y'all!
I attempted suicide in December of 1991. The following May I started
working with a therapist who asked if I'd heard of Tori Amos. I hadn't, but
on her advice, I picked up "Little Earthquakes" and got hooked immediately.
Here was a woman who could vocalize all I was feeling after being silent all
these years.
I was in a mental health ward when "Under the Pink" came out, but a nice
psych tech went out and got me a copy to listen to in the hospital. Once
again, here was my feelings coming out in Tori's words. 1994 was also the
first time I saw her in concert, which only increased my addiction.
Then in 1996, "Boys for Pele" was released. I hated it. It was so full of
anger and hate, the very chords seemed venomous. I forced myself to listen,
but for the most part, I just didn't get it. It took over a year to
understand what it all meant.
Boys is still one of my least favorite albums, but I appreciate where Tori
was when she made it, so I can understand it.
I relate this little tale because of how some react to the Beekeeper. It's
ok not to like it. However, I don't think it's a matter of overproduction,
or glossy pop. I think it's because you aren't in the same place as Tori,
and that's ok. Maybe you'll like what she comes out with next. Or maybe
you've simply outgrown her. And that's ok. Hell, what a boring life it
would be if we stay as we were, or if we all grew in one direction.
The last two issues have seemed like RDT is re-awakening. I'm glad to see
it. Thanks to Cindi for sharing. It sure did spark some conversation.
Let's keep it going. To all the newbie's out there...RDT is not
Tori-centric. RDT is where like-minded individuals come together and share
whatever...the only thing that links us is an appreciation of Tori. So let
it all hang out and let's talk! :)
Fairy Blessings,
Bethey

Subject: losing faith
I meant to say this in another message, but I nearly forgot.
As some of you know, I am also involved in another fan community, for
the English band Fields of the Nephilim. They officially broke up after
their final album, Elizium, was released in 1991. Since then, the
frontman has released exactly one album willingly, in 1996, and one
album of his music was released against his will about two years ago --
after the record company got tired of him not completing the work they
had contracted him to do.
The other members have gone on to other projects and produced albums,
etc.
The frontman in question has spent most of the past 10 years holing up
in his studio, and fiddling with various computer-animation projects,
and often threatening the folks in the fan community who put up sites
(like me and others), post news items and background info on the band,
and so on. That's right -- I am just about the only one of them who has
not received some form of threatening letter from the man whose projects
we have supported. His bevavior has soured a lot of people on his music,
past and present. The level of fan disappointment is *far* worse than
what we see here. I'm not necessarily trying to put things into
perspective, but I am saying that this happens in other permutations in
other ways with other artists.
Despite this, there are two fan communities which are still alive and
well, one in Europe and one in America. Most days we are still find ways
to talk about the band or the music or the lyrics, although both lists
have been expanded to discuss other topics as well. I'm updating the
news page on my site every couple of weeks, and have been for the past
three years -- not a bad rate for a band that broke up in 1992. :)
I suspect that although many of us might be unhappy with TBK or the
latest Tori tour, we're still getting something out of all those years
of music she made before now -- and we're hoping to get more out of her
music in the present and future. It's okay to take an honest look at
one's relationship to a musician and his or her work, and it's okay to
carry on enjoying what you enjoy even in the midst of feeling
disappointed by it. And the mere discussion of it brings us together as
a community -- which for me is a good portion of the enjoyment I get
from the "Tori world."
Just some thoughts,
Beth

I've got all my extra tickets for the Houston, TX 9/3 show on ebay now.
Please check it out! I really don't want them to go to waste, and I don't
think you will find better seats on Ticketmaster at this point. I had
extras to begin with and now a couple of friends have bailed on me as well,
as they can't afford it right now.

Subject: party like it's 1955
I just realized that digest #1955 is coming up pretty soon.
Fair warning, I intend to post excessively in #1955.
There will be relentless self-promotion, maudlin and meandering anecdotes,
useless aphorisms, badly structured haikus, long and extremely
scatological retellings of old vaudeville jokes, cut-ups and other
experimental writing, old song lyrics where I no longer remember the
middle verse, long stories about how tough things were when I was growing
up, and baseless speculations about the personal lives of famous people.
I have to mark the occasion somehow, after all. I was born in 1955.
Kerri sald:
> my general assesment is that it is like
> trying to really enjoy a rice cake.
Yes, that's it exactly. A co-worker of mine was eating those for a while,
and he always had this dutiful, bored look on his face while he crunched
away. He said it was like eating cardboard, but he had heard they were
good for you. He tries to exercise and eat well during the day to make up
for the fact that his evenings usually involve a lot more drinking than
sleeping.
It's that "Masterpiece Theater" feeling, the "this is really boring, but
I'm sure it's probably good for me" feeling.
I agreed with most of your post, by the way, but the "rice cake" part is
what had me whooping with laughter first thing this morning, because it
was so perfectly true.
As B/4,
John
P.S. Just heard that Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine" will actually
be released! Whooo!
