First of all, I don't know where all the extra ascii characters in my
"Addenda" post came from. I think I posted it from webmail, but I've done
that before.
Unless nobody else saw any extra ascii characters, then never mind. :-)
So, on to some responses to people named Beth*
(response to Cyndi coming soon)
Beth said:

Very true, though those are usually people who don't realize how difficult
it is to make good pop music. I remember when Herbie Hancock made some
pop records (in the 1980s, I believe) and he caught a lot of shit from
other jazz musicians for "selling out." I suspect none of them could have
made a successful pop record, no matter how hard they tried.
Bethey said:

I will try this, though my CD player doesn't program, as far as I can
tell, and my Mp3 player basically only does random (though I do love it),
but maybe I can burn a copy in the "correct" order. Which I assume is the
order of the actual lyrics, not the order of the song titles on the little
booklet?
I will try this, since you are my guru of Toriosity, but I have me
doubts. I have a lot of respect for Tori's musical abilities, but it
doesn't seem possible that rearranging the songs will give them more
variety, or make the album shorter, or remove all the overproduction. But
I'll give it a shot.
Bethany said:
> liz phair is another one that broke my heart. sigh.
Liz Phair and Ani are more similar to each other than they are to Tori, I
think, since they both faced the problem that artists face whose main
strength is spontaneity and primitivism (certainly not true of Tori). At
a certain point, you can't be a beginner anymore, you can't continue to be
primitive except by deciding to be (like the Ramones, playing the same set
of 3-chord punk songs for a quarter century), which is never quite the
same thing.
> hey friends, do you remember when CDs (or cassettes, or albums,
> pick your generation) had ten songs?
The length question is driven by technology and marketing, not by the
demands of art. It is now *possible* to fit that much music on a disk, so
it becomes (in the minds of some people and record companies) a good
idea. A lot of people used to complain about vinyl LPs which had less
than 30 minutes of music, but "The Ramones" had about 28 or 29 minutes of
music, and it was a masterpiece.
Small paintings are not (as a rule) improved by making them larger. Works
of art have to find their own size. Henry James used to complain that the
novella was the perfect format for him, the ideal length for a piece of
his fiction, but publishers demanded that most things be short stories or
novels, because that's how they could be packaged and sold.
(One of the many great things about being a web-based amateur novelist is
that I can make everything exactly as long as it should be.)
More is not always better. Less is usually more. When in doubt, leave it
out. KISS ("keep it simple, stupid"). Just because something is
possible, this doesn't mean it's a good idea. All good things to remember
when in the recording studio. Good art is absolutely in the edit.
Not that shorter is always better (loud fast rules, okay, but I'm not a
fanatic). Mick Jagger answered the record company's qualms about the
length of the new Rolling Stones album by pointing out that the all-time
most popular Stones album was "Exile on Main Street," which was a double
album (on vinyl). And was much shorter than The Beekeeper, by the way.
And had a much wider variety of sounds and styles and tempos (tempi?).
And a producer who was not in the band.
Nobody is judged by the quantity of art they produce, ultimately only the
quality matters. Nobody says, "that James Joyce was okay, but four books
and one play isn't enough to really be taken seriously. He should have
written more, like Trollope. Now *there* was a writer."
(Well, probably somebody said it at some point, but I think they were
wrong.)
As B/4,
John

Subject: running through my head...
first of all...
hi guys and gals. i'm still here and i'm still alive...
(kerri, kerriloo, whatever you want to call me)
i'm still in savannah, georgia and i'm getting married in less than two mo=
nths!
a lot of planning going on right now, for sure...
that said, i figured i'd jump in and throw out my two cents on the
new tori album etc.
i agree with bethany, beth w, john and the others who are of the
oatmeal persuasion.
luckily, i've been into all sorts of other more interesting artists
at this time...
(one of my good friends runs uncommonfolk.net, which is a small label
folk mp3 blog that is outstanding. he has turned me on to a lot of new
music, as well as helped me to defrost my musical brain from the
deep-freeze it had been stuck in for a while-
and that is keeping me pretty musically occupied and content, along
with the rest of my life.
basically, after reading the book and listening to tbk in all the
possible orders, my general assesment is that it is like trying to
really enjoy a rice cake.
i know some of you may enjoy that, but i'm just not into it.
i do find a few of the songs on the album beautiful, but i have have
been unable as of today to sit through the whole thing without getting
completely distracted or turning it off.
i'd rather spend my energy on other artists.
in 2003 i also had a horrible experience at a tori concert-and i know
it wasn't the venue because ben folds did an amazing job. tori was
completely disconnected and generally bitchy...whatever was going on
in her life, she dragged it right on stage with her. that has also
shown me what a fierce little war goddess she can be, and i'm sure it
had something to do with natashya or her perfect little life being not
so perfect and safe. i am tired of the Sacred Tori Bubble.
whatever. i'm a talented badass and i work my ass off and i don't
drag a fucking circus around with me wherever i go(i don't need a
bodygaurd for obvious lack of fame reasons, and i do understand her
need for that...). but i do think she needs to come outside of her
comfort zone and wake the hell up. and i'm not sorry at all to say
that. she makes me sleepy.
the only reason i'm still here is that i'm too lazy to unsub, and
also marginally still a tori fan.
i mean, i know too much. i've been around too long to give up
completely. and i still really enjoy most of her music. i feel like
i'm in the mob, fa chrissake. hell, i was part of the first
generation. ;)
i do still read most of the posts, and beth and bethany always leave
good bits of insight, as well as several others.
i'm happy and i'm in a good place and i'm ready to be done with the
'new' tori amos.
maybe she'll surprise me again, but i'm not keeping my toes crossed-
i'm not holding my breath. i can take my lust for musical greatness
to others who can more successfully satiate my eardrums. and not just
because they're angry or depressed or thinking about death or going
through shit, but because they still sound like they give one. they're
still alive, they're still alive, they're still alive...
also-cyndi-
don't give up-your anxiety/depression may be caused by your sleep
schedule, your diet, and your emotions all rolled up into one. try to
start eating good things and making sure you're getting the vitamins
and minerals you need...there are also more natural ways to work with
depression/anxiety than prescription drugs, etc. check out your local
health food store or websites on natural health and wellness.
can you tell i've been working at a health food store for a year now? ;)
i'm a hippie. i even bought a pair of crocs.
seriously, write about it and work through it, but take time to eat
well and be good to your body.
i know i sound like an old fart but it's true.
(i say this after eating half a bag of cheese puffs- but hey, they
were ORGANIC!)
hugs, etc.

Subject: Korean!
Hola mes amies!
Continuing my new obsession, do you know what the best language in the
world is? KOREAN! Or at least, the best language to learn, because I've
actually been entertaining myself with a "teach yourself Korean" book from
the library.
Yes, folks, you heard me right; I've been having fun with SCHOOL WORK!
Obviously it's the end of the world as we know it, but I feel fine (and
entertained. Mul Chuseyo! = Water Give! So! Much! Fun!)
Only strangely enough, learning Korean makes me hungry. Seriously, I just
ate lunch and I went upstairs to practice out of my workbook for an hour
and by the end of the second lesson, I was starving again! And only an
hour had passed. Weird, eh?
Concerning the Beekeeper, I liked it a lot better than Scarlet's Walk,
which was crap for me. Actually, that's a lie. I thought Scarlet's Walk
had a few stand-out songs in it, but the Beekeeper at least made an effort
to be DIFFERENT, unlike Scarlet's Walk where it was like every single song
had the same sound and the same speed and the same key and the same
non-enthusiastic vocals and it was all blah, with the exception of about 4
songs.
At least the Beekeeper tries to be different, even if some of the
differences make me want to chew off my own arm, they bug me so much. (The
Power of Orange Knickers? EUGH! HATE! HATE! EVIL BORING SONG IN MY
LEAST FAVORITE KEY EVER).... Um, yeah. I really don't like that song,
which makes it annoying to hear all the other Toriphiles rave about it
because I honestly don't get why they like that song. Sure, she does a
duet, but it doesn't matter if you have the prettiest voice in the world if
the tune you sing to sucks (at least in my delicate ears).
Hoochie Woman rocks my socks, though. Awesome awesome song.
So I had sweet potato balls for dinner, only they collapsed in the oven so
they ended up being sweet potato dog turds.
Dog turds are delicious, if they're made of sweet potato and pineapple.
Isn't "pineapple" a stupid name for a fruit? It's not an apple and it
doesn't grow on pines. In fact, if the pine trees in my yard gave birth to
its own fruit, I wouldn't touch it because it'd probably be poisonous. So
what's up with "pineapple"? I'd call them "Yugwums" just because that is
the coolest word to say. Try it. "Yugwum". I think I'll have a slice of
yugwum on my baked ham. Hee!
How Now, Brown Cow?

Subject: maybe this, then, is the problem.
so i read this article on the Dent:
http://thedent.com/more.php?id=2834_0_1_0_M
it has be just about the strangest thing i've ever read. i think the
author is quite out of her (his? i couldn't tell) mind. either that, or
they had a huge, festering bone to pick with Tori.
i did find it amusing that MikeWhy called it "terrible". i wonder why
(Mike, i know you're lurking around here somewhere...why?). i don't
think it was necessarily terrible, just kind of, well, bad journalism.
i did think it was rather refreshing that someone actually brought up
the notion that what she's saying might be nonsense. i'm sure Tori's
not used to that. other than that, well, it's clear the writer was on
drugs of some kind. too bad that Tori was in their way.
but i think i did figure something out (and it may be the root of why i
really haven't liked her more recent music): i think Tori has started
to take herself waaay too seriously. and that's never fun.
anyway, glad to see you RDTers are alive and kicking. thanks, everyone,
for their replies. many good points. i expect i'll shut up now about
how much i hate The BeeKeeper, now that it's out of my system, unless,
of course, someone goads me to continue. on to bigger and better
things.
how bout them Eagles?
