Some of each. The thing about the book is, there's a whole subtext with the
Three Musketeers and the life of Alexandre Dumas (as you may have guessed by
the title) which also plays a role in the book, making it much, much more
literary than the film. I think Polanski probably had to take that out to
avoid making it too complicated. And in the end the movie has more of a
Satanic focus because it doesn't have the Musketeers aspect to balance it
out. But most of the plot points are essentially the same, with the dead
man, his widow, Corso the book dealer, the mysterious green-eyed girl, and
the people he visits in Europe who all seem to wind up dead because of this
book he's after. The specific engravings, the differences between them, and
the artist's marks are also all the same as in the film.
This is definitely a book for people who are interested in old books,
especially old occult books. Anyone who can understand the passion that goes
into hunting down antique grimoires can probably get into it, and anyway,
it's a murder mystery at its heart. I enjoyed the movie, but I think the
book is much better, even in the English translated version I read (the
author is Spanish, and much of the film takes place in Spain and Portugal,
with a bit in France.)

Subject: Both Sides Now
In 1967 Joni Mitchell wrote "Both Sides Now". At the time she was 23 at the
time. Judy Collins covered the song and was a best seller. In 1969 Joni
included this song in her Clouds album that won her a Grammy and it remains
one of the standards even to today. In an interview in the 90's Joni made
the statement that Both Sides Now really should be song by an older person
who has actually looked from life from both sides. At 23 she could really
look at life from one side. In 2000 Joni re-recorded "Both Sides Now" and
the album won her a second Grammy.
"I looked at life from both sides now. From win and lose and still somehow
it's life's illusion I recall. I really don't know life at all"
A few months ago I was reading my college alumni newsletter and a name stuck
out. Sandra was my first date back in 1958. I decided to offer her a ride
to an information meeting for a college we both wanted to attend. I called
her up and got her Dad on the phone and suddenly ran into one of the curses
of dating life. I got to her house that night and was afraid to go to the
door perhaps hearing her dad's voice in the back of my mind. I sat in the
car for 45 minutes coming up with rational reasons why I should go to the
door. Meanwhile heads were popping out from behind curtains and a waiting
game was in full swing. We got to the meeting late and on the way home I
finally accepted the fact that I was on a real date. We stopped at a
restaurant, conversed, and I took her home never to date her or anyone else
again until I was in college. I never dated Sandra again for no other
reason than I never thought of it. The last time I saw Sandra was in 1962
when she dated my roommate for Homecoming. She went off to teaching and I
went off to grad school never to see each other again for 40 years.
Sandra and I lived near each other for 20 years. We were in the same
kindergarten class. We both moved to suburbia and attended the same
elementary, junior high, high school, college, and even meet our spouses in
the same young adult group.
In the year 2002 where even at an age of 15 many times all you can expect at
most is a functional virgin, you may ask about someone who had their first
date at a age of 17. Was I a misfit lost in society? Hey, I came out all
right and there are many misfits in my generation that came out all right.
Many got married a virgin and lived to tell the tale. Remember that
virginity can be the key to locking a relationship that lasts a lifetime.
Many throw away this key foolishly. (I wonder what the young fellow found
in Brittany Spears house that is such a big secret?)
I sent Sandra e-mail after seeing her name and we started sending messages
back and forth. She gets a steady flow of my articles and we reconstructed
that day in 1958 in complete detail. To a young person 44 years seems like
infinity before the earth was recreated but to us, 1958 was like yesterday.
People have this illusion that the past goes away but it does not, and can
pop up rather suddenly.
Last month I convinced my wife to make a journey to Cleveland to meet
Sandra. Somehow her husband and my wife put up this and there we sat in the
restaurant catching up on 40 years of existence. In 1962 we were both
looking at a future full of surprises. Nothing was certain and the
illusions of life were in full blossom. We did not know where we would be
living even the next year. Life was an act of faith that we had taken the
right path.
Last Saturday it was different. 40 years of life has passed us by. We
raised our children and the illusions of our youth have turned into reality
documented in selected photos. . Our futures are still rosy but the grand
adventures are over and our illusions of our future life are much more
limited.
Our life is like a novel. Many times we can read only the first few
chapters of someone's novel and the book disappears. You always wonder how
it came out and the subject being lost in the faceless masses robs you of
that opportunity. Sandra's and my life came out fine. We got want we
wanted. It had its ups and downs but we are happy. Life's illusions are
pleasant but neither of us fully understands life and why we got where we
are but we are looking forward to the final chapters.
"I looked at life from both sides now. From up and down and still somehow
it's life's illusion I recall. I really don't know life at all"
Have to end.

Footnote:
The legal part of my fire truck accident is over. The insurance companies
decided that the fireman should have looked before coming onto the main
highway. It was a blind intersection and the light was red in their
direction. There was no siren or red light and they were traveling at 50
miles/hour. Rational thoughts have won out and they had to pay all the
bills ($300,000). I only wish I would stop seeing that fire truck coming at
me and feeling the panic every few days.
Had an enjoyable two weeks in Germany. It was fun being back in college for
a week. Stayed in a dorm room with a bumpy single bed and ate school food.
Classes went from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm.

okay.
i rarely get medieval on anyone's ass around here, but you do not insult the
musical goddess that is Joni Mitchell as long as I am on this list.
i think Joni is anything BUT burned out. or retired, for that matter. news
is that she's working on a new album, reworkings of her older songs, and
there looks like there's going to be a movie/documentary to go along with
it, directed by Allison Anders.
i'm guessing you probably haven't heard her more recent stuff. check it out,
especially "turbulent indigo". Kind of amazing, almost 35 years after she
released her first album, she's still alive and kicking and a working
musician. I'll let ignorance be your excuse, but be warned: I will not be so
kind next time.
muhahahaha.

ps. i don't think Tori is burned out either, btw, i just don't like the last
few albums she's put out. burnt out would imply going creatively dry, which
Tori appears to be anything but.

i'm not sure i understand what ade's talking about here. nor do i exactly
understand how tori amos listeners are being "generalized" (especially
negatively) in conjunction with the others mentioned. it is absolutely true
that you can't be denied the right to vote (curiously dubbed "possession of
the vote"- i guess i'd have to read this article) on the basis of race, sex,
or any of o'rourke's "generalizations." you also can't be denied so-called
"possession of the vote" based on other "generalized groupings" such as:
people who wear three-piece suits, gays and lesbians, cheerleaders (if
they're over 18), people who pierce their genitals, limp bizkit fans, and
girls whose thongs stick out whenever they bend over (about one in every 4
females ages 16-29; it's frightening, really). maybe i'm missing the point,
but i think the use of "tori amos" in the article was just a mere
coincidence. o'rourke could've just as easily substituted tori for "britney
spears" or "p. diddy," and i still don't see the negative connotations. i
don't have anything pierced, wear my pants relatively low and occasionally
listen to tori. i see nothing insulting.
what's more tragic is the news snippet i just saw tonight, which is that a
california federal court has ruled the "pledge of allegiance"
unconstitutional. what the fuck is THAT about?!?! being that it's late and i
have an early day tomorrow, i'm saving my copy of the court's decision for

ridiculous, a jackass named kevin was pimping the theory of "have

hello rdtrners
thanks beth for the info on the sneaker pimps album, i'll put it on my list
of "things to buy when i feel like a splurge". i am assuming that "splinter"
is available in the u.s. too - it's a consistently very good album and
everybody should buy it (well perhaps not everybody but...)
cheefoska juan is "in a natalie merchant voice mood" - and guess what, "gun
shy" is playing on my stereo right now! natalie has one of the most
incredible
voices in music, period. even my dad, rarely stirred to such comments,
said he
gets "shivers" when he hears her sing. i listened to "love among the ruins"
(post-natalie 10000 maniacs album) and even though the songs are probably
not a
great deal better or worse than most maniacs songs, without natalie they just
don't have that edge. i'm a huge manics fan: "our time in eden" has to be one
of the great albums of all time and "stockton gala days" and "jezebel" are
just
incredible songs. and i'm starting to listen more and more to natalie's solo
recordings, and looking forward immensely to her new album.
i can see how people would be attracted to eminem, and i can't deny that he is
immensely talented. i wouldn't buy his albums, though - i find so many of his
lyrics both juvenile and disturbing at the same time - whether or not he's
making clever social commentaries i just find the man distasteful.
i listen to tori every now and then - most often LE or Choirgirl or Venus,
hardly ever BfP. but as beth c said, she nearly always turns up if i put my
own compilations together. having said that, i have to add that there is no
artist who i listen to every day - i go through phases, keeping certain discs
in my player for a day or two and then moving on to the next thing.
got to go now

Subject: Hello
So, I haven't written in a very long while. Ever since
starting my new position, I have been SWAMPED at work. I go
from not having much work to do on a regular basis to not
having enough time to do everything I need to. I feel so
out of the loop. I really haven't even been able to read
any of the digests for a while now. Still won't be around
much. Last 15 minutes at work need to be spent taking a
break being that I have been doing collection calls all day
and people are just nasty today. Argh!! I think I feel a
brain anneurism coming on.
I might be complaining a lot, but I actually do like my new
position. It's nice to be busy since it makes the days go
by faster.
I am officially divorced. Have been for 26 days now. I
love it! Even though I am in a pretty solid steady
relationship with a boy I like very much. The same guy from
before. He is awesome, even though we got into our first
fight yesterday. It was not pretty, but making up was fun.
:-) We went camping with our kids last weekend. It was
fun. We went fishing and just relaxed. Kids were a little
overwhelming at some points, but not bad.
I listen to Tori all the time. Pretty much on a daily
basis. My mood decides which CD to listen to.
And, about Eminem, I think he's hot. Way hot. I would
never date someone like him, but I do find him attractive.
Plus, I don't think he's as gross as he pretends to be. I
bet he's a total softie. One of those people who's so
sensitive they put up a front to try to "protect"
themselves. That's just how I see it.
Anyways, gotta run to pick up the munchkin from school. Had
to keep it short and sweet due to the lack of time and the
interruptions.
Take care!!

How many times in the next five years will I use that
as a title for a post? I know I used it now and then
during the past 3 years, and I'm sure it'll only get
worse.
Arija mentioned:
"how can you say that he's sexist "without question"
when you've just used all his other lyrics to show
that he's just being sarcastic?"
Hmm... good call... I think calling him sexist was
probably not as appropriate of a phrase to use as "he
appears to have violent fantasies about women in his
life". I say this because there are different tones
to his songs, and his lyrics can't just be taken at
face value. Each album of his has its big intro
single (My Name Is, The Real Slim Shady, Without Me),
which generally has a joking, sarcastic tone.
And then there are the songs where he gets darker and
more serious. He's not joking. These are songs like
"The Way I Am", "Kill You". I have to include Bonnie
and Clyde in that. I mean, it's definitely more
upbeat and not as dark as some of his other songs....
but it's also very focused. As with a lot of rap, his
songs bounce around from topic to topic. But Bonnie
and Clyde is about one thing. He really hated (hates)
his ex-wife. There was nothing put-on or sarcastic
about that. The song just had an entirely different
feel to it.
Even so, though, you're right. I did kinda contradict
myself. I do that a lot. There was some kind of
method going on in my head when I was trying to
explain myself, but I didn't do such a good job. I'm
a very very sleepy new grad student. All my thinking
occurs during the day, and then my brain shuts down
when I get home. Hehe.
And, I have to say that I'm not one to say who Eminem
is and what his music is about. That's just my take
on him, and I could most certainly be wrong.
As far as other offensive people are concerned, has
anyone ever heard of the comedian Jim Norton?? I AM
SO IN LOVE WITH HIM! check out his picture on

means, but DAMN sexy.
