  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On July 22nd in 1993, an article about TV talent bookers (who
book artists for shows like Leno and Letterman).

In 1994, more on CD connection, a suggestion that the broken
glass on the back of the UK CG CD single spells Tori's name,
fan club defending itself, part 1 of 3-part interview from the
     Balt. Sun:

TA: For the next record, it's really important that I take
everything and do a whole other step again. I think that's
what I always loved so much about Beatles records, was it
was a constant new frontier. I don't know where we're going
next, but I'm feeling pieces of it coming together, whereas
`Little Earthquakes' was more of a diary and `Under the
Pink' is more to me of an impressionist painting, this
project is maybe a little bit of both and something
completely different. So I don't know, but I do know that I
need time to make it great, and I won't put anything out
that I'm not really proud of.

Also, a member remembers Tori playing American Pie in Berlin
(where Tori first heard Kurt Cobain had died) (ie approx a
month before the Dublin or Belfast shows).

In 1995, more kids TV shows, the UTP video, music these days
(95% of it sucks), books and movies that scared you when you
were a kid, and an article about RAINN being short of funds.

In 1999, a little bit of Monkey, more on list behaviour, and
     more JFK JR.

  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On July 23rd in 1992, discussion started on the Crucify live CD
box (with prints), which morphed into a discussion on the price
of CDs (singles and albums) in the US, and the scarcity of CD
     singles outside of major cities.

In 1993, is Anthony Horan (an Aussie list member) a
blabbermouth?, and brief mentions of Aimee Mann and Jane
     Siberry.

In 1994, part 2 of the Balt. Sun interview, and a reply to the
     fan club post.

In 1995, good music, a plea for Tori to come back to Israel
[still waiting to see how *that* pans out], and things that
     scared us.

In 1996, lots of discussion about various angles on drugs, the
Net causes less than 6 degrees of separation, repressed
memories, the TWA plane crash, a parody of Blood Roses (titled
     Sears Hoses):

        sears hoses
        sears hoses
        in the back yard now
now you got out the rocks
from the soil in the yard
as least when you mow now
the rocks can not hurt you
when flowers get ahold of your peat
        when your garden is neat
        sometimes they're nothing but weeds

In 1998, one list member mentions getting called as a potential
participant in MTV's Fanatic episode on Tori, an interview
between Dave Matthews and Tori, questions and answers about
     meet and greets.

In 1999, more on JFK Jr and things that make people mourn en
masse, personality tests, explanation of what 'Monkey' is
(Japanese cult show from about the 70's), disappointment in the
Tori Fanatic episode, more discussion of appearance, best four
tracks off each of Tori's albums, and sad songs.

In 2001, someone finally answers properly what EWF stands for,
comments on SLG (the song), and some Tori mondegreens.

        heyyyy people! :)

Elisha said: "btw - is anyone gonna answer poor Cindy and tell
her how to be a fuzzy ferret assistant? Help the girl out! She's cuter
than hell, she'd make a great assistant!"
well I'm not fuzzy though! lol.. and.. as you found out, I've
been told.. :)

My mom saw Minority Report and thought that it was *freaky*.. she didn't
like it at all.

e asked: "ps. speaking of disappointng finales... does anyone agree that
Fight Club's could have been much much better?"
well, yes and no.. no because I saw it before I read the book..
and it blew my mind so hard I haaaaaaaad to see it again!! oh I loooove
that movie. and yes, because there was much more in the book than there
was in the movie itself.. you have to read the book, dude!!

Succubus Barbie is taking Ade with her and they're going to learn to
write better.. hey you coulda taken lessons from ME! lol.. seriously..
have fun! :)

Simon said in reply to my question about "who has BEEN to a show where a
song got put onto TVAB?": "You know, I've always wondered what songs from
which Plugged AT 35 tour were ultimately used for the live TVAB CD. I
was at the d30-m2-AT35 show here in San Antonio, and it would be very
interesting to see if anything from that show might have ended up on the
CD."
there was a webpage of the songs so far or something.. someone
needs to give us that url again..

Simon then replied in response to my feeling of the TVAB version of Bells
For Her: "I know what you're talking about. Hard to explain it, but the
live versions of some of her songs really sound "otherwordly"."
lol yeah it's SO difficult to explain but it works on me like..
it's almost physically draining, but then so are the first two songs on
CD1 of TVAB! o_O when Concertina kicks in, I can almost feel myself going
"PHEW!" and.. the same thing with some of the songs on Boys For Pele..
starting after Caught A Lite Sneeze.. up until after Hey Jupiter.. right
when Way Down starts.. I feel sorta emotionally drained--and all I did
was listen--and then it starts.. and I can just feel something in me go
"WHEW!" and just.. sorta try to recover.. it's hard to explain.. best way
I can is by remembering and paraphrasing what Michael Jackson (yes I know
too much MJ but dude I was a freak for him for seven years, cut me some
slack! lol) said in his autobiography about his Off The Wall album.. he
said that "She's Out Of My Life" was VERY personal and emotionally
draining and that when it was over, it was kinda hard on the emotions,
and then just as the beginning of the next track began, it felt, as he
put it, as if a door in that dark heavy room were opened and let all that
heavy emotion out.. like a release.. an escape.. I feel the EXACT SAME
WAY whenever Way Down comes on--ESPECIALLY due to Hey Jupiter.. can you
figure what I'm saying out? lol I hope!

Simon then asked: "about the movie "Mayor of Sunset Strip" you found out
about- just how long has this movie been completed but not released?
Sonny Bono died in 1998."
well I read more info on it. it's an ongoing documentary starting
sometime in the 60's.. and then going on into this or next year.. so I
figure they're gonna use archive footage of the dead people.
OH and Simon.. do you or anybody you know have that Trial By Jury
episode on tape.. or do you know where I could get it online?? I wanna
see it! :)

Matt said in reply to my Two Towers question: "it's the second part of a
little-known book called "the lord of the rings" by some fuddy-duddy old
english professor from oxford called tolkien or something like that.
apparently it's got some nice twee elves and dwarves in it - probably not
worth bothering with."
hey now, I saw LOTR 1! it was awesome. I'll go see LOTR 2 dang
it! :)

and on *THAT* note.. *MWAH!* *blows kisses* later! OH and one more
thing.. the geocities url in my signature.. check it out! I updated it
yesterday!

aurgh.

the opening frame to juno has a scroll bar where you choose which email
account you want to open. for some reason, though i never bothered to
find out what it was, my email address was on there twice, and my
boyfriend's once. apparently, in some insomnia-driven-computer-cleaning
in the wee hours of the morning, james (the boyfriend) decided he was
just going to delete one of the names so that my email address only
appeared once. little did he know that would actually delete my whole
account from the hard drive. how he *didn't* know this is absolutely
beyond me since he seems to know EVERYTHING about computers, but ah-well.
he didn't mean to. alas, there went every email i've received in the
last year, along with some pictures, poetry, my email address book, blah
blah blah. AND - the last few RDT digests that i had planned on catching
up on. i guess i COULD go and read them in the archives, but i'm simply
too lazy!

hey! my website looks COMPLETELY different than the last time i sent it
to the list, so i shall send it again!
http://www.geocities.com/below_the_waste
all redesigned, lots of new art, new poetry, as well as a few new added
pages.
go look, go look!

i will finally be getting back to work within the next week (not that any
of you knew i *wasn't* working)... there has been a state hiring freeze
throughout all of oregon, so after getting my CNA license, i was unable
to get hired right back to the state hospital here in salem. finally, an
approval for my hire has gone through, so i'm back in business. *sigh of
relief*

has anyone here heard of john forte? if not, you MUST check him out.
beautiful, beautiful music. the album i recently purchased is called "i,
john". i have also been listening to a lot of belle and sebastian (a
topic i noticed on the list before all my email went bye-bye)... they've
been a constant in my cd player for some years now, but i just recently
got the album "if you're feeling sinister." it's great. "the
miseducation of lauryn hill" has also been in heavy rotation, along with
"songs of love and hate" by leonard cohen.

long ago, on HBO, there used to be a show called "mr.show", mainly sketch
comedy... it's where i first fell in love with david cross (decidedly my
surrogate boyfriend). my boyfriend and i just got tickets to a live
performance of mr. show in portland. i'm pumped! and it falls just a
couple of weeks after our second anniversary, so it will be a good
celebration!

*sigh* there has been so much going on - good and bad - that my head has
been kind of spinning, not knowing what to feel. my mother flew back to
MN a couple of days ago after finding out that her mother is very sick.
i wrote a poem about it --

_____________

mama has crawled down
from the cupboards where
she keeps her baptism
her faith, her doubt
to cry, to pace,
to say goodbye.

she's losing her mother.

she weeps and weeps
but my sadness doesn't come
to claim understanding
my sadness doesn't come.

i'm mechanical.

i make plane reservations
i write her a list
i make her eat
and i clean her dishes
but my tears aren't for myself
or for the woman who
instilled her fears
installed her doubt
broke her down with
negligence.

i can picture it now,
the vision that will
shake her, rattle her
make her say goodbye
every time she looks upon
the once irish-red hair
and transparent, milky skin
now tired, rough, and
exhausted with thoughts of the end

_____________

it's not up on my website yet, i think it may need a little editing
first, but i'm not sure what to do with it.

well, i'm off to get some cleaning done.

sorry for filling the list with non-tori related matter.

with love and pasta,
jewel.

Do you just listen to Halford's solo material or do you also to listen to
pre '91 Judas Priest when he was still in the group?

One of the first music videos I saw was their video for "You've Got Another
Thing Coming" back in late AT 18. Not sure if any of you remember, but
back then MTV actually ran real music videos, and good ones to boot!

Or even those coworkers Brian mentioned who get a little carried away with

precisely- and what about people who have those 50 or 100 CD capacity CD

you really want to store your originals in the changer unit?

Those types of sirens seem to be in use for other purposes elsewhere as
well, like areas in the US prone to tornados or other kinds of severe
storms. Effective for getting people's attention, but still, no way around
the fact that hearing that sound is going to make those within earshot
wonder if it's only a storm warning.

Interesting use of those sirens to tell people it's time to head to work.
A large clock that sounds the appropriate number of bells would seem to be
a better thing for that though.

Cyndi commented on me potty training Tiarna. Well, we've basically
succeeded. Occasionally she'll be too into her play to make it on time to
get the underpants down, but I don't mind that as long as I don't have
puddles to clean up.

Had another ante-natal clinic check up today (actually the midwife said that
recently potty trained kids can regress when a baby enters the family.
Fingers crossed it doens't happen in this case). I'll be 28 weeks tomorrow,
and in anyones books, that's into the third trimester. Time is flying by.
I'm only just getting into cleaning out the spare room, we won't have the
bed out of it until the weekend, and then we have to paint the wardrobe
before we can move Tiarna into there. But Glenn is supposed to be working in
Sydney the next two weeks, so who knows when the painting will get done,
since I think I'll pass on it due to the room not being the best ventilation
wise.

I've never understood the appeal of Tom Cruise. For the most part I don't
seem to follow the Hollywood trends.

Simon typed:

There is a website that if not located all of them, worked out the origin
for most of the tracks.

SLG. The ones I have are a redefinition of perfection and are a
representation of the supernova brilliance that is Tori.

I've heard him interviews on Art Bell's radio program about his theories
about the real age and construction of the pyramids in Egypt- basically he
says that the pyramids and Sphinx are at least a few thousand years older
than the officially accepted 4500 or so years.

Yeah that Microsoft logo is pretty scary. Same reason Motley Crue used in
in 1983 for the "Shout at the Devil" cover.

Be careful and check that paint can. don't confuse it with Eggo Moon-

welcome back deadra the dancing girl :) about getting into radio:

You might want to check out any public radio stations in your area. The
commercial broadcasters are so corporate these days that it's all about
money and ad sales, and hiring talented on-air and production people has
really taken a secondary role. Here in San Antonio most of the radio
stations are owned by one of two huge companies :(

Goodness. I LOVE that game. I'm convinced I could make millions being a

So as a weekend job I'm a river guide. It's a pretty fun job and quite
amusing. Sometimes people are just not water people. Two canoes flipped
and swamped yesterday, one right after the other on the same rock...now
don't you think if you saw the canoe in front of you flip and swamp that you
would make an effort to steer around the rock so their fate did not become
yours? People and belongings everywhere...bottles and paddles floating
downstream...it was a mess.

Must try to get some *work* done...mondays suck.

In #1672, asked Simon:
>Are funnel-web spiders the really nasty ones I've heard about?

Yes. Thankfully I don't see many of them where I live now, but the area I
grew up in was literally crawling with them. they were prevalent wherever
there was water in people's gardens, like fountains and swimming pools.
They can survive underwater for a week, so it's not a good idea to pick up
something black from the bottom of a pool with your hands.

Some people think of Guns aNd Roses. I must point out that roses are more
likely than an Uzi here considering our gun laws. But when you see a dozen
couriers turn up in a day with bouquets, you'd wonder why someone would go
to all that trouble to hide them. Besides a guitar, probably the most
obvious thing to put in a guitar case is a gun. I do however wish they'd
have the bubble making machine in there that you suggested.

Of course. I used to have a poster of it. The world was the clock face and
the hands were two ICMBs.

For those bored with the topic, it's all Napster debate to the end of this
post. I have noted the replies on this subject by Megan, Cyndi and Simon on
this subject, but they raise things I've already covered and if not, Beth's
post will clear up the rest.

In #1671, Beth wrote:
>My understanding is that, at least in the US, it is completely legal
>to record music you own for personal use

It may be, it may not be. Any good lawyers around here? Not you Koba. :-p
My understanding of it, here at least was that it's illegal to copy albums,
but the authorities turn a blind eye to it, but they do get interested when
music is pirated. But really, I'm yet to see a legal notice on a CD that
says you can copy it for personal use, so we have to take it no copying is
allowed.

>But that's what I'm asking: when does it become 'theft?' The moment you
>download something?

Yes. You're taking something you don't own and don't have the rights to.
Isn't that theft?

>What if you wind up buying it after hearing and liking it? Is it theft then?

If you bought it and then listened to it, no. Downloading it and then
buying it doesn't change the fact.

>How can you make it possible for people to copy CDs they have purchased
>-- which it is their legal right to do -- but not possible for people to
>copy and distribute music?

We still haven't determined that people have the right to copy CDs they
have purchased. But when you distribute the music, you are giving away
something that you don't legally own.

>And would it be ethical to take away the rights of consumers in order to
>punish those who won't put money out for the music they're listening to?

What about the rights of the record companies who own the material and the
rights of the artists to receive royalties?

>I never would have bought CDs in Australia. They seemed astronomically
>expensive, even after taking the exchange rate into account. I think the
>only Australian CD I got when I was there was the "God" single.

But they are not astronomically expensive. Sure, they may be to a college
student with no job, but considering CDs will play for years, even decades
if you look after them, they are well worth it. Try doing that to vinyl for
years and it's unplayable.

Again, if you factor in inflation, you'll probably find that albums are
cheaper now than they ever were.

The old chestnut of "a CD only takes a dollar to manufacture" doesn't hold
much water either. Most of the cost is taken up by the distribution chain,
the record company and finally the poor artist. That's why it is cheaper to
buy CDs on-line: you cut out a couple of layers of distribution.

Compare it to computer games. Let's say they cost a couple more dollars to
make because you get a nice booklet with it and an oversized box. It may
have cost the same as an album to make, may have taken as long to produce,
but costs 4 or 5 times as much as a CD. You can probably add once you've
played it through once or twice, you'll never play it again. Where's the
value in that? Why is software so grossly expensive? Pirating.

>Sure, but there's a counter-example. Let's say I read about an obscure
>band in a magazine, and want to hear more from them. I go to amazon, but
>the sound quality of the samples are disastrous. I don't know anyone who

>like it. What then? If this is a small, indie band, they would hope for me
>to buy their music -- but I probably won't take the risk, as CDs are
>expensive.

And what if you did go out and buy the CD but didn't like it? The artist
gets their royalty and will be thankful. If the band is obscure, they will
probably stay that way if they are no good. If they don't suck, over time
you will hear about them which will give you more impetus to buy their
album. Sure, you might miss the odd good band if you never get a taste of
their music, but chances are you'll miss a lot of bad ones. It's not an
imperative in life to know every band.

>While I agree that making mp3s is illegal, and it is within artists'
>copyright to protect themselves from that kind of duplication and
>distribution of their work, the amount of financial damage a few teenagers
>with their computers (as you said yourself, the number of people
>downloading these things is likely very small) can do to a big-name artist
>is miniscule.

If we start with a figure of 1 billion CD buyers using my example, the end
result of my equation you still have 100,000 people not paying a cent for
new music. That's a lot of people to me. What about all the ones that
occasionally buy albums of music they have downloaded? You're average
downloader is between 14 and 24, so they don't have much money to splash
around, but that demographic was the largest consumer of new music. As I
always say, I couldn't give a fat rats about the record companies, but it
is hurting the artist.

I'll tie this in with the cost of CDs. It was something I hinted at in my
previous post on this subject but nobody picked up. The prices of CDs in
the US went up at the same time as all the record company mergers. Again,
it is simple economics when you remove competition from a market prices
will go up. They are still trying to come to grips with the fallout from
those mergers, so they are tightening their belts. The rise of Napster only
made them more paranoid, so it's only natural that would be factored into
pricing as well. Again, it is the minority that fuck it up for everyone.

I'm actually really disappointed by all the replies made on this subject.
People have only concentrated on their "rights", of which they have none.
The same self-serving arguments are put forward by everyone to justify what
is an illegal practise. There is no justification. End of story.

What you never hear discussed is options. If people can't get it for free,
they don't care about anything else. I really hoped people would comment on
the alternatives I raised in my initial post in digest #1665, which cover
every point people have made since about their "rights".

What does Janis Ian really want from her article on
http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html
which started all this? It's not about Napster. It's about the right to do
with as she pleases with the material she created which she doesn't own.
That's one thing I was really hoping would get discussed.

Again, let me make it clear I am not attacking people on this subject, just
the issues.

Matt, if you've got anything constructive to add to this whole thread, be
my guest.

Tori Amos Finds Her Voice Again

July 19, 2002

It appears as though Tori Amos has gone from living amongst the fairies
to reinterpreting Eminem songs, to at last, getting down to what she
does best write and record her own poignant material. The thoroughly
modern piano banging chanteuse (who many a young female
singer-songwriter tries unsuccessfully to emulate) is slated to release
her next studio album, Scarlet's Walk, in October on Epic Records. The
album was recorded in one of the most spiritual places in the western
world, Cornwall, England the area where King Arthur and The Knights of
the Round Table roamed. Amos self-produced the album which brought her
together with longtime collaborators drummer Matt Chamberlain (Bowie,
Fiona Apple) and bassist Jon Evans. A US tour will shortly follow the
album's release, with international dates to follow.

I had ordered the Tori Amos Collection Video off of ebay a couple of weeks
ago and got the tape in the mail this weekend. I had never seen some of the
videos. I LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!! I had never seen the video for
china before. I am so excited! I've watched it 3 times already. I am
going to a Tori Amos Meetup tomorrow to meet some other toriphiles in the
area. Should be cool.

Dogs and cats do pick up on when someone is depressed or not feeling well.
When I was living with my parents, and it happens nowadays for that matter
when I'm there to visit, if I've been in a bad mood one of the dogs will
come over to me wanting to play :)

I totally noticed that last night. I woke up last night with the worst
migraine and somehow Homer (my cat) knew and started meowing and rubbing up
against my leg and looking at me. It was so sweet. He was trying to make
me feel better.

Lavs mentioned trying to potty-train Tiarna - Good Luck! I've heard girls
are much easier. My sister is trying to train my nephew right now. They've
been working at it for a couple of months. He's fine with going pee in the
potty but it's still hard to get him to go poop. He'll hold it because he
doesn't want to stop playing and go to the potty. Yesterday, he went in his
pants and tried to get it into the toilet without my sister finding out. He
got it all over the place! All on the cabinets, the floor, and the toilet.
The minute she found it, Cody started crying and she had to clean it all up.
It's times like that I'm glad I don't have kids yet.

That's all from me.
