But it's funny, back to the `Silent All These Years' thing,
if I can just jump in and say, it's made me look at the
fact, I just think I'm able to understand `Silent' now, and
some of those songs, `Me and a Gun,' so that my writer side
of me is going, `God, these songs are very current for me
now,' and they have a power that I didn't really at the time
know how to translate on tape. It's the same with `Under the
Pink.' I think I'm doing `Icicle' better than I've ever done
on record. I'm, like, growing into them.
In 1995, a member posted about respecting music you don't like,

So most of us have probably heard about the six song sampler floating
around and found out where to download the songs from it.
I notice no one here has really mentioned anything about it yet, but I
just wanted to mention that if anyone does want to talk about it here,
please be kind enough to put a little spoiler warning at the beginning
of your post so those who want to wait to be surprised (yeah? who?)
can scroll past and not have it ruined for them. :)

The beginning of Precious Things, to me.. sounds a LOT like.. a
furious downpour of rain.. What do you guys think? I'd go into detail,
but I'm not sure where to start. all I can say is especially with the
piano on the album cut.. it just makes me think of dark stormy clouds and
kids playing around IN the rain. Funny, since I just now remembered the
line "running after the rain". I wonder if that has anything to do with
it, what do you guys think?

It may be slightly off-tangent to CD-burning for personal use, but I would
like to relate a dumb-ass thing I did a couple of years ago.
When I finally moved out of my parents' house at the end of 2000, I was so
eager to get up and go, I packed my stereo, computer and my mattress in my
car, just so I could stay overnight with the bare essentials in my new
apartment. I own a 25-CD changer, my delightfully charming Pioneer A-800. I
carefully put the various computer and stereo components into my car,
buffering them conscientiously with cushions and towels. However, it wasn't
until I unloaded my main component of my stereo did I realise my gaffe. I'd
left all 25 CDs in the changer, and with my quick hoist out of the back
seat, the CDs clattered around inside the unit, to my absolute horror.
In this particular model, the CDs are held vertically inside, and the door
opens downwards to allow access to all CDs at once. I got the stereo
upstairs, plugged it in, and then tentatively pressed the "eject" button.
Of course, a couple of discs were stuck. It took a while for me to swallow
the fact that I had to take it to a hi-fi store to see what they could do.
The one I took it to said they couldn't promise anything, but lo, when they
unscrewed the case, there were 25 CDs, all sloshing around the ether in the
back of the stereo. Ha ha. Didn't I look like a dickhead? At least I got to
see the inside of my Pioneer, which was actually quite fascinating.
If I'm trying to shake the bad week I've had, I guess listening to the
score for "The Sixth Sense" while doing prep for my double Year 8 class is
not the best of ideas (considering my Year 8s are the ones giving me the
ulcer and headaches at the moment).
Boo.

As for potty training, my mum told me that getting the kid to do a poo on
the potty can be tricky if its a relatively high one (the theory being a
more 'squatting' position makes it easier). Tiarna doesn't seem to have any
problem in that department though. I've actually been working on Tiarna on
and off for about 6 months, but the last two weeks were a concerted effort.

hi guys
brian wrote:
"Matt, if you've got anything constructive to add to this whole thread, be
my guest."
well, i'll leave it up to everyone else to judge whether or not the rest of
this post is constructive, but i will chip in a few thoughts. i may repeat
some things i said in my first post on this subject a few months ago, in which
case please forgive me.
here are two quotes from the UK Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988:
"The copying of the work is an act restricted by the copyright in every
description of copyright work." [section 17 (1)]
"Copying in relation to a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work means
reproducing the work in any material form. This includes storing the work in
any medium by electronic means." [section 17 (2)]
the back of an album called "from the choirgirl hotel" by tori amos has this
printed on it:
"unauthorised copying, hiring, lending, public performance and broadcasting of
this recording prohibited."
all of this seems to me pretty incontrovertible. copying a musical work is an
infringement of copyright and therefore illegal. it backs up what brian wrote:
"My understanding of it, here at least was that it's illegal to copy albums..."
that's as far as i want to take the legal side of things for the moment,
because a) it seems pretty clear cut and b) i'm not a lawyer.
a question which we might need to address, though, is whether or not there are
good reasons for this law. what are the arguments for and against?
to my mind, there is one main argument in favour of restricting copying: it
permits the retention of control over how one's intellectual property is
used.
an artist produces a work, and from that moment the artist has the sole right
to exploit that work. the artist may choose to make copies of the work and
distribute them to others, perhaps in exchange for money. this allows the
artist to make a living from their work and to produce more works in the
future.
what are the arguments against restricting copying? it seems that the main
one
is that if people can't freely copy, they have to pay to have access to
artists' work. hearing a copy of a work allows us to make informed decisions
about whether we want to pay $15 for a cd. owning a copy of a work means we
might never have to pay out the $15 at all.
there's a much bigger question to be addressed here, though; one which brian
touched on:
"I'm actually really disappointed by all the replies made on this subject.
People have only concentrated on their "rights", of which they have none."
this is a major issue for society as a whole, in my opinion. many people are
happy to turn to the law when it comes to their rights, but are rarely
anything
like as vocal when it comes to their responsibilities. we have to balance out
the idea that "it's my right as a consumer to make an informed choice" against
the idea that "it's my responsibility as a member of society to repay others
for products and services".
it seems to me that a basic rule of ethics, morals, good citizenship or
whatever you want to call it, is that if someone does something for you, you
repay them for it. if someone makes you a new hat or clears out an
infestation
of cockroaches from your kitchen, you repay them for their work. likewise if
someone creates a musical work, you have an obligation to them if you want to
enjoy it - unless they choose to share it with you free of charge, of course.
there are som nay ways for people to inform themselves about music: listen to
the radio, read reviews in magazines, talk to other people, believe the
marketing. how do we decide whether we want to see a movie or a play, or
buy a
book?
and i believe that one of the most enjoyable things about music is when you
buy
something you've never heard before and you end up loving it. do we really
want to take away that sense of *discovery*?
brian also wrote (about janis ian's article):
"It's not about Napster. It's about the right to do with as she pleases with
the material she created which she doesn't own. That's one thing I was really
hoping would get discussed."
this is the catch 22 situation, and as brian says, a very intersting topic for
discussion. as i said above, the creator of a work has the sole right to
exploit that work, or to give it away for free if they choose to do so. an
artist can release material into the public domain and distribute it as
much as
they like over the internet or via any other means. or, if they choose, they
can enter into an agreement with a publisher, with whom they share the
proceeds
of a work in exchange for using the facilities and experitse of the publisher.
this is what creates the janis ian situation - artists sign contracts with
record companies so they can have their work professionally recorded and
distributed, but surrender ownership of their intellectual property. if they
then decide later in their careers that they wish to take back their property
and distribute it freely, they can't (unless they have a very understanding
publisher...). this is the dilemma facing artists - sign away my IP rights in
return for cash and exposure, or take my chances on my own?
it would be interesting to see what people have to say about this.
matt

I never thought of that! I have always thought of the intro of Black Dove

But Thanks! Cyn, You have given PT, a new beautiful perspective. :)

A Signing of Epic Proportions
Tori Amos' Scarlet's Walk to Begin October 29th
NEW YORK, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Epic Records is pleased to announce
the signing of Tori Amos, one of the most celebrated and respected
artists of the last decade. Tori is a unique talent whose distinctive
voice and thought provoking songs have mesmerized and inspired a
generation of fans throughout the world. She represents a proud
addition to the Epic Records family.
Scarlet's Walk, her Epic Records debut, may very well be her most
inviting release to date. It is a sonic novel of sorts which takes the
listener on an aural journey of America's recent and not-so-recent
past. As the story moves from coast to coast, questions are asked and
notions are challenged with each song representing a specific stop
along the way. In the middle of it all roams Scarlet, "... who may be
the land and may be a person and may be a trail of blood" (Neil
Gaiman).
The disc was self-produced and recorded in Cornwall, England (the same
studio as several of her other releases). It features performances by
her long-time collaborators Jon Evans on bass and Matt Chamberlain
(Bowie, Fiona Apple) on drums. The record's first single "A Sorta
Fairytale" will be serviced to radio in mid-September. In support of
the album, Tori will embark on a headlining tour of the United States
this fall with international dates to follow.
Worldwide, Tori's critically acclaimed discography includes the 1992
multi-platinum breakthrough album Little Earthquakes and 1994's Under
The Pink, as well as the platinum successes Boys For Pele, From The
Choirgirl Hotel and To Venus and Back. Her most recent
"reinterpretations" record, Strange Little Girls, is certified gold.
For her work she has received eight Grammy Nominations.
Scarlet's Walk will be available in stores October 29, 2002.

Jewel bemoaned the accidental deletion of her Juno account. Hmmmm.. are

that happens during times like that--like insomnia, and so on.. and hey!
I saw your redesigned site, Jewel, it looks good! :) Love that poem you
wrote about your mother and her mother..
Jewel then said: "sorry for filling the list with non-tori related
matter."
Oh, poo.. don't be sorry. that's what THIS list is for! I
luhhhrrrrrvz it! :)
Simon replied to my "Where are you?" question a few months back: "just
busy. Amazing how fast time goes by and before you know it, you're behind
again."
yeah, kinda sucks, doesn't it? :)
Simon then said in reply to my burn copies for different rooms of houses
thing: "precisely- and what about people who have those 50 or 100 CD
capacity CD changers? Those are designed to be left loaded, like a
jukebox. But would you really want to store your originals in the
changer unit?"
exactly! you don't want the original to get damaged in ANY WAY!
Simon then said of air-raid-style noises: "Those types of sirens seem to
be in use for other purposes elsewhere as well, like areas in the US
prone to tornados or other kinds of severe storms."
I go to Moore, OK when I go off to visit my grandmother.. and
normally every saturday at noon, somewhere in the city (we passed it once
while it was going off), an alarm like that goes off as like.. a tester..
Thing is.. my mom says that if it's already raining or storming.. they
won't test it because they don't want the townspeople to panic and think
it's the real thing.
Lavs said that Tiarna's potty-training has basically succeeded. YAAAAY!
Hey, are you gonna bring a laptop along when you go into labor with this
baby? *grin* you can't leave us out, ya know! ;)
Simon said: "I'm still amazed that a stuffed toy tiger had net access!
;)"
shoot and what about Calvin? rofl.. aren't his parents smart
enough to put a password on every single thing on that computer?? lol
Simon said in reply to Bethany's disappointment of TVAB and SLG: "You
must have accidentally picked up parallel universe copies of TVAB and
SLG. The ones I have are a redefinition of perfection and are a
representation of the supernova brilliance that is Tori."
I have to agree, and yet, the SLG album is the one album I hardly
listen to.. and yet when I *do* listen to it, I find it amazing. I'm just
more distracted by LE, TVAB and FTCH cuz those three are my top three
favorite Tori albums. UTP is 4 (even tho The Waitress and Icicle are
absolutely FABOO songs..) and while I'm learning to appreciate BFP much
more (remember what I said in yesterday's post about Hey Jupiter and Way
Down and how I feel when WD comes on?).. it's #5.. SLG is #6 tho because
I get distracted by the others.. not because it sucks or something.. o_O
cuz it really doesn't..
oh Deadra, I got Arija's $$ for her copy of Under The Covers.. where are
you? email me when you get the chance and if I haven't already, I'll give
you my mailing info so you can send me whatever you feel is right to send
me okay???? I really don't want to stiff anybody here with this so..
PLEAAAAAAASE!
Anna said in reply to my mention of playing Dope Wars: "Goodness. I LOVE
that game. I'm convinced I could make millions being a drug dealer. I

game, really good if you are looking for a procrastination toy."
oh yes.. definitely.. I made 35 million once!!! WHEE!! I'M RICH!!
I'm.... no wait it's fake! AAAH!
Coops said of funnel-web spiders: "They can survive underwater for a
week, so it's not a good idea to pick up something black from the bottom
of a pool with your hands."
um.. but wouldn't the chlorine or baquacil (whichever you use in
a swimming pool) er.. KILL them??
Coops said in his rebuttal on the debate of copying CD's etc: "Again, let
me make it clear I am not attacking people on this subject, just the
issues."
and believe me, we love you for that. :) (at least, *I* do. I
hate flamewars.)
and on that, lovely Arty Turners.. I will see you tomorrow! Have I ever
mentioned how I always check my email first thing upon waking up in order
to see if a RDTRN email has graced my spam-filled inbox? It's the
highlight of my waking up part of the day!

hee hee hee.. *blush* (no I don't embarrass easily. I'm not
embarrassed. ;)) well thanks! I guess it's just cuz I'm a writer.. and..
speaking of that.. you should go to fanfiction.net and look up Ciara
Blaze--that's my pen name on there--and read my stories there. I've done
like.. three fanfics based on Tori's songs and one based on a Madonna
song.. and the first fanfiction.net story I ever did was about Aaliyah.

and The Cult of the Sacred Pepper (worship of Dr Pepper :) is growing. A
friend of mine started that one... I don't know what y'all think o' that
though...
and the ever indomnitable Brian Cooper writes about lots of fun stuff and
then writes about copyright stuff which gets me thinking and remembering...
International Copyright Law (which I suspect the US is no longer a signature
of and China never was):
- one (1) copy of -any- media is allowed for backup purposes. This copy is
for personal use only and must be destroyed if the original is transferred
to someone else.
If that answers your copy question. Anti-copying is technically allowed but
they should provide a method to make backups (or some method to get
replacements for damaged media).
It gets fuzzier with local laws. (I'm not a lawyer but copyright has
mattered a great deal to me as I sometimes publish software)
The US doesn't seem to allow anything.... they scary in a 1984-way
Canada includes a copyright fee in the sale of all copyable media (ie blank
tapes, cds, videocassettes and the like) which means that one is allowed to
make unlimited copies of music and video data - as long as it's not used for
public viewing. If you happen to live in Canada go down to a gov't office
somewhere and pick up the writeup for business people - it's got some fun
examples :) Note that computer data still only allows one copy for backup
purposes....
Of course if you're making backups of your -own- work onto CDs, say, then
the copyright fee is just a tax... *grr*.
Personally I'd assume that making mp3's for one's personal use should be
okay as long as one has the original album but distributing them is a no-no.
(note that for DJs that mp3 hard drives can be licensed for public show in
Canada :) (I remember the announcement of that law still :)
The tradition of an artist being supported by a patron (such as music
producers) is an old one - but the current arrangements for recording
profits and the like are -not- fair to the musician usually.
Oh - and while mass produced CD distros cost < $1 (even Canadian $ :)
a personal distro one self-publishes ends up costing somewhere below $10.
What this has meant for in CD prices is that people who wouldn't ordinarily
be able to publish their music -could- AND sell it. The prices on CDs ARE
artificially high but the result is that for the most part the record
companies don't have a monopoly on music publishing :)
Although it seems to be getting rarer again that people compete *grr*
Yah I'm lurking lately. Life very busy has been...

hi everybody
i'm just back from seeing "minority report" and WOW, this is one of the best
films i have seen in a very long time. a film about the nature of guilt,
about
pre-determination, revenge and loving something so much that you'll go the
furthest extreme to avoid giving it up. i could have lived without some of
the
rather formulaic hollywood stuff (fist fights, chases and slightly schmaltzy
endings) but that doesn't take away from what was all in all a wonderful piece
of work.
i think "ai" might be next on my list after e praised it so highly a few days
ago. for now, though, it's time for me to sleep.

Tori's "Walk" Set for October
Amos makes her Epic debut
Singer-songwriter Tori Amos will release Scarlet's Walk, her first set
of completely new material since 1998's From the Choirgirl Hotel, on
October 29th. The album will be Amos' first for Epic Records after six
over the last decade for Atlantic, including her collection of covers
released last year, Strange Little Girls.
Amos, who self-produced and recorded the disc at her home in England,
will tour the U.S. this fall to support the release. Its first single,
"A Sorta Fairytale," will be sent to radio in mid-September.

Subject: Hellooooooooooooooooo
Hi everyone!
Well I could not resist to start bothering everyone with countless e-mails
to
our list :)
Simon: On Night Terrors:
You describe it perfectly, It is like sound breaking through static, a voice
breaking trough static.
Also I also happenend to me, as you said, many times to dream that you have
got out of a dream, but you are actually in it, and then you get out of it,
for REAL. It is SOOOOOOO creepy, and eery. Though, on a slide note I have
never experience, lucid dreams, those dreams where you realized that you are
dreaming and you can direct the course of it.
Cyndi: On Tori and Bells for Her.
It4s funny becuase I NEVER liked the UTP album version, to be honest I HATED
IT. Then It came my desperate search for a copy of TVAB through out almost
the entire lenght of Argentina when it came out. When I finally got a hold
of a rare copy I found on a very small record shop that specializes in
imports and rare stuff, I did not recognized the song at first. The TVAB
version is so haunting, almost hypnotic; it has a sort of CALS credo as
regards the recurrence of rythm and sound patterns, to me.
Since my hearing of the TVAB album version, I started to like a LOT the UTP
version, and now it is one of my favourites. I
I like both, also I LOVE the Harpsichord version, but it4ssssss soooooooo
creepy.
I do not know the Harpsichord can be so chilling, harsh and cruel. It always
sound kind of dangerous to me. LOL. You have to hear how Harsh, and I mean
H.A.R.S.H, it sounds on the Unplugged and Unreleased Bootleg, that features
her MTV Unplugged. Almost Brutal and Unforgiving.
Beth: On her Website, Selkies, Books and Cyndi Lauper
Went to See your website and Love it. I LOVEEEEEEE the selkies section. What
Can I do, I am a Sucker for Faeries and Celtic folk. I got a book that it is
quite basic. It is by Jennifer Heath or something like that. It is called On
The Edge of Dream. And It is a Reconstruction of Celtic most popular myths
and Stories. I like it.
Also you mention Graham Hancocks Fingerprints Of the Goods. I got this book
for my last year birthday. It is fascinating, but quite hard to get at
points, he remids me of Joseph Campbell. I have read Campbells book The
Hero Of A Thousand Faces, even though it took me almost 2 years to finish it
(YES! I AM THAT SLOW LOL), I enjoy every minute of it. Last Christmas got a
little book of him called The Trasfiguration Of Myth Through Time, It sounds
really cool, but have not read it all yet.
You are sooooooo lucky, I envy you soooo much LOL. You met Cyndi Lauper. She
is one of my favourites. I enjoy you Q&A, a lot. Also find your Reviews of
Toris work very insightfull, I printed the BFP one, for one of my classes.
:)
Please, tell me what are you reading becuase I love reading about Mythology,
Magic, and Faeries, I feel such a freak, becuase I do not know anyone who
does LOL.
Well, about me. Even though I am fed up of having problems I am quite good.
Today I went to my record store and they gave me a CD-R [I do not have a Cd
burner :( ] as a gift. It was a nice surprise. It has Cyndi Laupers Songs
TIME AFTER TIME (Vh1s Hard Rock Live Dulcimer Version), and TRUE COLORS
(Violin A Capella Version). They are beautiful, and very Irish/Appalachian
sounding. It made my day becuase I wanted the TAT Dulcimer version on Cd-R,
for quite a while. :)
Also I have been thinking of buying a new book, I want to buy one by Paulina
Melville or someone with a similar name. The
book is called Migration of Gosts. It seems to be a short Stoy book. It
looks as if it is really fascinating. What do you think Guys?. Well, I
promise, But Only if you want!, to write on a daily basis. Because you are
the coolest guys I ever meet, I am tired of meeting assholes for friends in
real life....
Also, I WANT TO PLAY DULCIMER LIKE CYNDI Lauper, but I cannot becuase there
are not craftmen here in Argentina that would build one without specific
planes. And there are not Dulcimer teachers here, so I do not know about
learning by myself, I do not find it very convincing...
But I love sooooooooooo much that instrument, and lets face it it is more
likely that I learn how to play a Dulcimer than a Harpischord LOL.
So If you can help me, I would love it :)
See ya Really Soon
Daniel
