  [ =======================>  In RDT History  <======================= ]

On September 12th in 1993, a listmember reviewed an album by
Australian singer Margot Smith, "Sleeping with the Lion." He
     wrote:

In "Sleeping With The Lion" we have the birth of a major
talent, and who would have guessed that it would come from
here in Melbourne. Mainstream record labels here usually
stay away from this kind of music like the plague, and EMI
are to be commended for taking the plunge. Whether the have
        the savvy to get people to hear the record is another thing;
all I know is, this is the finest album I've heard since
"Little Earthquakes," and the first since then to move me,
affect me, and intrigue me in quite the same way.

[Anyone know what happened to her? -Beth]

In 1994, more reviews of Tori shows, and an article from the US
News & World Report about whether or not Anastasia Romanov
survived the murder of her family in 1918. Also, a fairly
detailed interview regarding Tori's friendship with Neil Gaiman
     that was featured on AOL.

In 1998, yet more six (or so) degrees of Tori separation,
including at least one listmember who managed to link himself
to Tori in five steps. Others included Buckethead, Bill
Laswell, John Lydon, William S. Burroughs and Michael McKean.

In 2000, speculation on whether the new baby would have Tori's
     last name or Mark's.

In 2001, everyone began to respond to the events of Sept. 11.

Well, much as I liked the Clash and the Sex Pistols and the Jam (and the
Damned, and the Gang of Four, and the Vibrators and even the Stranglers,
though I didn't like them so much at the time) and so on, they were the
second wave, the British wave, and what sometimes gets forgotten was that
the original NY punks (like the Ramones) were very poppy indeed. The
British bands took the musical style from the Ramones, and the spiky hair
and the torn clothing with slogans written on it from Richard Hell and the
VoidOids, added a hefty dose of politics and ended up with the punk that
most people remember today.

Megan C.A. asked:

> Were you as freaked out as I am?

Oh, yes. Though some of the girls I dated were not so forthcoming with the
information that they liked me. They were willing to admit that they loved
me, but "love" doesn't always include "like." One of them told me she
wanted to dance on my grave (I think she meant it in a nice way, but I'm
not 100% sure).

Bethey asked:

> So what should we do on September 11?

Well, me, I'm working, still a block from the Trade Center site, having had
to go through unusual security and crowds to get here (as you can imagine).
I may go in a few minutes and look out the window where I was standing when
the second plane hit. Or I may not.

> I think 9/11 should stand for a day when we think of
> others and try to do good works with glad hearts.

I think this is an excellent idea.

The other thing I would propose is to stay in touch with people (which is I
guess what I'm doing here, by writing this). Call your friends,
partner/lover/spouse, parents, children. Talk to the people you were with
a year ago (one of them is sitting at the next desk to mine, so that's
convenient for me).

As B/4, staying in touch,

John

9/11/02

There's this guy that I met during freshman year of high school. I don't
know what it is about him...but I'm really attracted to him...despire all
the horrible things about him. I don't like his personality. He makes me
laugh sometimes which is a good trait in his personality, so I guess I can
see that I don't like a lot of things about his personality. He is somewhat
homophobic and extremely violent which are really bad traits and terrible
things. So, I guess I kind of pushed aside the bad things about him and I
focused on the good...like some of his humor and his looks...he also cares
about people (sometimes) and can be nice. That's pretty shallow of me to
pick someone like him...but I feel like I can't help it. I started to
wonder if I was in love with him...but then I quickly shook the thought out
of my head...that's why I think I have a similarity to the song "I'm Not In
Love" on StrangeLittleGirls.

"I'm Not In Love"
I'm not in love
So don't forget it
It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because I call you up
Don't get me wrong
Don't think you've got it made
I'm not in love
No no
I said
I like to see you
But then again
That doesn't mean you mean that much to me
So if I call you
Don't make a fuss
Don't tell your friends about the two of us
I'm not in love
No no
It's because
I keep your picture
Upon the wall
It hides a nasty stain still lying there
It hides a nasty stain still lying there
So don't you ask me
To give it back
I know you know it doesn't mean that much to me
I'm not in love
No no
It's because
Ooh, you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh, you'll wait a long time
I'm not in love
I'm not in love

Subject: Communities

When I visit the local mall, every so often I meet someone and we carry on a
conversation and after they leave, I ask my wife "Who was that?". I know
that person from somewhere but do not know what community they came from.
We know people from what community they come from. If you take them away
from that community we have a problem identifying them.

Our whole existence is that of communities. To start off each of us are
composed of a community of billions of cells working together. We become
members of communities throughout our lives. These communities come and go
throughout our lives but communities control our day to day existence.

Looking at governing communities that control our lives, the lowest level is
our immediate family. This is the level that has the most control over our
day to day lives. As we grow older they change from parents and siblings to
wives and offspring. This is the level that will take care of us in a
crisis and will dedicate their lives to our behalf. The next level up is
the neighborhood we live in, our company we work for or the school we
attend.

The next set of levels is the various levels of government. These include
towns, states such a Pennsylvania, and the country we live in such as the
United States. It has been centuries since cities have had wars with other
cities. However, Pittsburgh has the Steelers who have war in behalf of the
community against other cities. Football is war without the killing. The
dedication of the community is tested by how much physical pain and personal
injury their team is willing to withstand. Victory of the team is victory
against the other city.

The real community of concern is the federal level. This is the level that
fights the real wars. It is on the national level that millions have died.
It is at this level that billions could die within in a few minutes. It is
at this level that the US has a golden umbrella where if they go, the world
goes with them. Today, September 11, the media is dominated by request for
loyalty to this community.

The next level up is the human community. This is on an uneasy peace now
with the US controlling it with our vast economic wealth and military power.
Again there is the issue of Iraq and who dominates the human community.
There is always this conflict of national interest verses the interest of
the human community.

Humans are really are part of this vast community of multi-cell plants and
animals. Humans have absolute dominion to this community. Civilization has
made us all-powerful and nothing is even close to us in power. The whole
environmental effort in recent years is in the tradeoffs between the
interest of man verses this community. Destroy this community and you will
destroy mankind. We can only exist by consuming other members of this
community.

The next level up is all life on earth. We have just obtained near
domination of this community in the last few decades. We were in constant
war with the viruses, and infectious diseases and seem to have won the war.
Compared to even a few years ago, very few people in the US died of
infectious diseases. The US spends vast amount of time and effort on this
war. It can turn against us again.

The next level up is the earth verses what ever is out there. Independence
Day and other science fiction movies address this. We had not to face war
on this level. A few weeks ago I manned the booth at a UFO show at the
local mall. I have been a part of a group that investigated UFO's for 20
years. People would come to my table and sort of just stand there. After I
would brake the ice, they would describe in a low tone of voice an object
they saw in the past. Many times it was a large object on a few hundred
feet away. They were scared and were also afraid to tell anyone about it
for years. I suspect they drove miles just to talk to someone. There are
millions that are convinced that there is an alien race visiting us on a
regular basis. They are convinced there are intelligent communities outside
the earth. There is no physical evidence for the existence of this outside
alien community but it is real to a lot of people.

We cannot understand September 11th unless we understand another community.
The driving force behind the whole set of events a year ago is about
existential communities beyond earth. Existential communities beyond our
earth are a day to day driving force for much of the earth's population. To
the terrorist, Paradise was as real a community as their hometown. To many
Americans Heaven and Hell are some fantasy concepts far removed from day to
day life. To my Dad, Heaven was awaiting him and he simply went peacefully
to sleep to wake up there. To the Communist there simply is no existential
community.

Humans have not had to address communities outside our earth. We have no
physical proof of their existence but with faith in the Second Coming,
Paradise, Alien encounters, and the United Federation of Planets, their
realization may be just around the corner. It really gets down to what
really are we. Are we simply a community of cells creating an illusion of
identity? Are all of these outside communities simply an illusion generated
by our ego? Or will we someday after this wild train ride we call life ends
look back and ask "Why couldn't I have seen all of this?".

Have to end.

Avril Lavigne punk? You've got an odd definition of punk. It doesn't sound
like you've listened to the album at all. Maybe you're basing that on how she
dresses, which isn't punk. I don't see her trying to be punk.

This country will never get over such a mass murder, and I don't think we
should. Yes, the news coverage is aggrevating. I don't think they are helping
the grieving process at all. I think September 11 should become a National
Day of Community. We need to make it a day where the result is the total
opposite of the intentions of the attacks.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Okay. We're going to be board game friends! I've decided. Alex will be

Clue until he becomes less scary.

I think he realized exactly how much he was freaking me out, though,
because he emailed me today and apologized for seeming all stalkerly, but I
immediately rebuffed him and told him he had no need to apologize even
though that's what I was complaining of about him and so I just told him
that the thing that was freaking me out was okay to do again and I'm a
total idiot when it comes to guys who want to be more than just regular
friend friends and turn into scary guys who may or may not become
boyfriends and I definitely need to shut up now.

I've just alienated half the list by calling guys scary so I'm going to
shut up now and hide my head in the proverbial sand and go away now, okay?

pointed out that I already had a copy of an early version of the album on
CD, and that I wasn't really likely to leak it to the web, I learned that
Everybody was getting their CDs like this, which made me smile. I was also
warned not to follow the lead of someone I will not identify here [ I shall
disguise his identity, to save him embarrassment, and will only identify him
by his initials -- MC -- and say that he is a percussionist of great
coolness and excellence]. Anyway, this unnamed person apparently decided to
try and open the sealed Walkman and remove the glued-up CD, and managed to
cut his hand quite badly in the process. So I shall not do this. Nor shall I
go to plan B, Boil the Walkman. I shall just press the play button, and be
happy. I'm really looking forward to hearing the whole story in finished
form, and trying to decide what kind of thing to write. Diary entries,
maybe. Or a sort of American Gods thing. Or something else. Ah well, I'll
talk to her and we'll figure it out.)"
