originally, it's james m. barrie's "peter pan" - second star to the right
and straight on til morning! where neverland is.
and apparently (i haven't heard it) she has a b-side on the sorta fairytale
single called "peter pan" - discussion on strangefruit says it's in
reference to "peter pan flights" from cuba.... don't know much about that.

>she then said: "i just found out that the guy i was recently seeing is
>now impersonating me by opening an email account after my 'real' name."

this made me think, how many of you have passwords to your
boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse's email accounts? me and my boy totally know
each other's (we exchanged them for convenience sake, like if one of us was
away from a computer and needed to look something up, the other one of us
could do it).... and there have definitely been times where i've been
tempted to "snoop" into his email but decided against it. mainly because
once i read an (ex)boyfriend's diary and found stuff that i definitely did
not want to know - well, that i didn't want to find out in that way, anyway.

also, i've always just assumed that b has never read my emails, notebooks,
etc. although he told me recently that he google searched me and found old
posts to rdtrn that i'd written in high school. he said he felt vaguely
like he was violating me by reading those, but also that it seemed like a
totally different person writing them. (that's a relief. high school =
jesus shit.)

ok, i'm sitting here trying to think of other things to write, but nothing's
coming. i'm going to see "the ring" tonight.....

Well, I've known her almost 1 year. I'm not extremely attached to her and I
basically am fine with not being her friend anymore. I do hug her and say
my his and byes in the hallway but that's it. Everytime I make plans with
her this year while she's got her boyfriend on her mind for after school
24/7 and her family 24/7 on weekends doesn't include me in any of it since I
only see her for like a mila-second in the halls....anyways, with all that,
her plans never go. She's always got an excuse and she doesn't even care if
we never get together again because if she did, she wouldn't do this stupid
EVERY DAY after school thing with her boyfriend...there's nothing wrong with
seeing your boyfriend a lot after school, but to say that EVERY SINGLE
FUCKING DAY, that's just way too much!

If she wants to get out of that dumb situation, she can very welcomely
E-mail or write or talk with me about it and apologize for the bullshit or
I'm not talking to her anymore. I've been through too much of this "friend"
bullshit and I'm not going to hang on to something that doesn't want to hang
on to me.

My complaint for eternity..............it's hard making friends.

Subject: Scarlet's Walk

First of all, belated congratulations and best best wishes to the new
arrival and to mum Lavs. All the best to you both.

I've listened to Scarlet's Walk many times, including on the subway
(haven't traveled with music in a long time). I haven't listened in my
car because only one speaker works.

I've even read the words, which I almost never do (of course, I had to get
them off the web, because they're unreadable on the CD and the special
web site thingy doesn't seem to have any provision for Linux folks).

There are times when I think that making "Strange Little Girls"
reconnected Tori with songcraft and comprehensible lyrics, at least a
little bit. Maybe that's wishful thinking on my part, but I'd swear there
are songs here which you can actually understand.

"Wednesday" makes me think a lot about the day after 9/11/01. Walking
around the streets of NY that day (a Wednesday), with no cars on the
streets but fighter jets in the sky, was definitely the feeling of being
lost in America.

I agree with whoever said that Tori's harpsichord phase was more
interesting then her Rhodes phase. Boys for Pele is still my fave, hands
down. I agree also with Brian that this is (so far) a good Tori album,
but breaks no new ground. Which is fine.

Since I'm doing cutups again (www.u-town.com/text), I've been reading
about them, and I came upon an article saying that Bowie and Bono have
used cutups to write lyrics. I wonder about Tori sometimes, but I suspect
she doesn't. It would explain a lot, though . . .

Also, I found an interesting interview on the Dent (translated into Dutch
and back). It answers the question I had about the last tour, which was
why, post-9/11/01, she didn't play "Muhammed My Friend" even once. I
thought it would have been a great gesture, saying that the Moslems aren't
automatically The Enemy, but I thought maybe she held back because of not
being sure how people would react. Turns out that, reading between the
lines, she didn't play it because the thought America was totally
justified, striking back, protecting its young, bombing Afghanistan like a
protective mother.

A hilarious thought, really. If you can look at GW and discern any
maternal instinct at play, you're seeing something I've never noticed.

In general, it is surprising that there hasn't been more detailed
discussion of the album here. I feel like I know more about which little
trinkets people got than what they think of the actual music.

I'm not talking about posting what various music writers think of the
album, reviews from here and there and everywhere. If I want them, I can
go get them, but historically the writing about Tori here has been far
more interesting and accurate than I can find almost anywhere else. So,
if you're driven to post the review from the Podunk Tribune-Examiner,
please just stop and tell us what *you* think instead.

Or, if you really must post the Podunk T-E review, please post a link,
not the whole thing, and maybe just give a little clue as to why,
specifically, we should be interested.

More coming soon.

As B/4,

John

Or it may be a different reference, since I believe that "second star to
the right, and straight on til morning" is from Peter Pan, and (for that
reason) it's also the course heading Captain Kirk gives at the end of the
sixth Star Trek movie (the last with the original crew).

So, it could be a variety of references.

Subject: my wonderiffic first concert ever ever.. of Tori's.

ah today was a busy busy busy day. November 10, 2002.. what a
great day. :) let's just cut to the chase here. I met up at the Disco
Diner with a fellow GA fan and we chatted and then tromped over to the
Civic Center with her, her friend, and my mom.. I bought my merchandise
and then gave it to my mom so she could hang onto it for me and I
wouldn't have to.. my mom rocks. :D
anyway, Howie Day.. the opening act.. was actually really good..
REALLY good. I just may buy his album.. :) he played guitar and sang and
the kewlest thing was he'd play and somehow record him playing or singing
or beating on his guitar for like percussion.. and then loop it.. it was
really kewl. I never saw anything like that before.. (but then this WAS
my first concert. :))
so, he rocked.. and then.. intermission I RAN to the bathroom
(**WHEW!** lol) and then ran back, and then the lights dimmed and then
Tori sang Wampum prayer and she wasn't onstage for it.. I guess she sang
it backstage.. or somethin'. and then after it ended.. the red curtain
dropped.. it looked so RAD.. and then her bassist and drummer hopped
onstage.. and we all started cheering, and then she got onstage and
EVERYBODY LEPT TO THEIR FEET.. me included.. and I was already hyped, but
she jumped onstage and I think I damn near had a fucking heart attack! I
SERIOUSLY felt myself going crazy. I was jumping up and down and
screaming and "WHOOOOO!!"
Princess Meejay: Wow, I bet it was simply amazing getting to see her in
person.
Ciara RavenBlaze: oh it was. I mean.. after she came on.. and we all sat
down and stuff.. I sat and watched it very calmly.. cheering loudly in
between songs and cheering even louder to songs I wanted to hear, but
overall just really calm.
I even got a little sleepy at a few points. o_O my mom says that
must mean she's very soothing to me tho so.. can't be a bad thing. :D
anyway, she played Take To The Sky and I clapped along while she slapped
her piano on beat, it was so rad ass. and.. she left.. and we stood up
and cheered, and she came back for the first encore, and we screamed
louder and played uh three more songs, then she left again, and came back
again and played.. two more songs..
the LAST being the DAKOTA VERSION of HEY JUPITER!! with her
BAND!!!! and with the adlibs that are in the remix and when she was in
the middle of the song before that, a lot of us (me included) got up and
moved forward. she was 30 feet away when I was sitting down and then she
was oh.. 20 feet away when I moved closer. I was surrounded by other ppl
but.. during Hey Jupiter.. I swear. I almost cried! I ALMOST CRIED!!! I
was so fucking close to crying it shocked me that I was even wanting to!
and I was there and I was waving my hand back and forth to the
beat and jumping around and singing along as best as I could. I kept
choking up so I'd go "WOOHOO!!" instead and then after that, the show was
over, so I just followed the crowd.. and I wound up outside in the back
trying to meet her but the damned security ppl were like "move on, she's
not gonna come out blah blah" so.. after waiting for oh.. 30 mins (and
oh, I had to pee SO BAD!!!).. my mom said "let's go.." eh well. I wanted
to meet her so bad, but she already made my night by singing Hey Jupiter.
I didn't need to meet her for my night to be perfect.
Oh, she also sang I Can't See New York too and that was seriously
beautiful too.
and finally, my mom agreed to go with me next time Tori comes to
GA.. assuming she does on her 2nd leg or so of her tour.. she agreed to
buy a ticket for her and me.. and that pretty much sums up my day. :)

I'll put this on my website along with the pics taken today (none of Tori
unfortunately) soon.. but if you wanna see the pics *now*, email me and
lemme know. :)

I say Lavs, have you seen the latest Bundaberg Rum ad? Not the "blue dress"
one, but the one with the drop bear. I nearly asphyxiated. It was almost as
bad as last week's CNNNN when the Microsoft Office paperclip was wandering
the streets giving advice. I couldn't get over a perfectly respectable
looking woman buying a train ticket say "FUCK OFF" in no uncertain terms
when the paperclip said, "I see you're buying a ticket, would you like some
help with that?" I think my worst nightmare has been realized... Clippy on

I get the impression you use the expression "ear candy" in the same way I
do, in that while it's sweet and exceptionally easy to listen to, when
you're done with it you're left with the feeling of being unsatisfied. I'm
slowly coming to the opinion this album would make great elevator music,
mainly because most elevator music sucks and needs to be banished to the
flaming pits of hell, but SW is easy enough to listen to but won't tax your
ears. Dare I say it, the album's very middle-of-the-road.

>Until then, I AM PISSED ABOUT MY F'ING CHARM.***

There's nothing wrong with your charm from where I'm sitting. I think that
joke's getting stale already. As for your thoughts on to lube vs. natural,
I don't think I really needed to know that, but it has been noted for
future reference. ;-)

 From Brad in #1742:
>Now I think we can get back to the real America. I hope Dubya has a
>chance to appoint some Supremes. And approve now all the judges that
>have been held up by Demokraps can now be confirmed.

Before I start, is that with or without Diana Ross? Or do you
really mean a type of pizza? Hold the red peppers please.
A judicial system biased far to the right is likely to overturn the
democratic right to abortion, along with other similar social issues,
setting the country (and the rest of the world) back 50 years. It's why I'm
unequivocally glad I live in a country where no party has had the
crucial balance of power at all levels of government. It's like a boat's
keel, keeping both sides straight on course. Anything else is just a
simple form of dictatorship.

The only thing that concerns me is that Dubya will have advisers behind him
who are hell bent on a war with Iraq and will do so without UN consent. I
believe he's actually handled it well so far, in that he turned up the heat
on the UN to basically get what he wanted in the first place without having
to step outside the system.

The biggest positive I can see from a local perspective is that a Bush
administration is talking more seriously about free trade than any other US
government has done in the last 20 years. It's been hypocritical of former
governments to extol the virtues of free trade, then turn around and slap
tariffs on imports and subsidies on exports.

How about the cricket?

I wasn't even thinking that far. It would be pretty shaky ground to
prosecute as it would smell too much of entrapment. All I was thinking that
it could be done to generate interest, therefore increase sales in the new
album. It would be a purely promotional exercise.

The Craw attacked me with...

As long as I can suck the last of the helium out of it to do Donald Duck

Subject: I blame it on myself

I meant to comment on the 'trinkets'. I don't know that there's anyone
(though there probably is) who got the Lim Ed solely for the charm. I myself
view the charms as a talking point, a nice extra, but not the be all and end
all of the package. Yes, having them all the same would have saved a lot of
'what did you get', but it could also create a nice little situation where
people are trading them to get one they like. But I'm happy with my
starfish, so don't look at me.

I managed to listen intently to the first few tracks of the album this
morning. It definately rewards closer attention, hangon, I can word that
better. It's near on necessary to pay close attention to it initially so
that you don't just dismiss it as not up to Tori scratch. I found it much
more enjoyable than simply having it on in the background, though even then
it sounded 'nice'. I can tell I'm really going to like this album, just need
a little time for that growing effect (but less so than some of the previous
ones). Tiarna also really enjoyed the map. I wondering if eventually I'll be
able to hav eit on to tune in and out of like her earlier stuff, and only
occasionaly think and dwell on things the lyrics bring up. At the moment it
feels quite different in that respect (am I being very clear here?).

Beth typed:
>As an aside, I also noticed Tori sings "Straight on til morning," which is

While I have been able to listen to the album a bit more, I still haven't
really gone through with the lyrics, so I'm not entirely sure of the
context, but 'straight on till morning' I immediately think of as being a
Peter Pan reference ('second star to the right and straight on till
morning'). Speaking of which, I still haven't listened to Operation Peter
Pan.

Interesting stuff about the Hermit.

Oh, and last message I said something about obese babies. I doubt it's
possible to have an obese newborn, and really anything I would term a baby I
find it hard to think I'd ever refer to one as being obese, no matter how
big they are. A 12 pound baby sounds very big, but is it obese or has it
just a serious kick-start to life? ah dear... too much thinking and not
enough sleep...

Subject: Tori Atlanta pics

I know for a fact that ppl were taking pics of Tori left and
right at the Atlanta show. I, unfortunately, had to be a GOOD little big
girl and left the digicam I brought with my mother. Anyway, my point is..
anybody got 'em handy? PLEASE let me know if/when you do.. (online that
is.. :)) because I'm putting my first-concert-ever experience of Tori on
my website (the platinumcomplication one) and I don't have any pics of
her performing, but I would REALLY appreciate it (and I'll give you guys
credit!) if you guys could send me pics of her performing--or at least
direct me to a url with them up.
        Thank you verily much. :)

Sincerely, Cyndi S. Crawford

Tori Amos' response when asked to describe herself in five words: "I. Do.
Not. Describe. Myself."
