Beth - I can only hope you're not being similarly inundated with people
pointing out that Peter Pan was around long before Disney made it into a
movie. Can't recall now whether it was a play or story first though.

I'm begining to get comments to make about the album. Like how I nearly
cracked up laughing when Wednesday started... I felt like I should be
slapping my knee in time to the music. But I do like the changes in style
through it. the contrasts in style remind me a bit of my reaction to Past
the Mission when I first heard it.

Having paid a bit more attention to the lyrics, I know there's things I
wanna look into more. Like Athena (I know who she is, I just wanna know if
there's a reason Tori mentions her how and where she does).. and um, gah,
it's late, I haven't listened to it for about 14 hours and the lyrics are in
the lounge and I'm too lazy.

Oh, and there was something along the lines of holding back a hurricane,
that made me think of holding back a glacier. Will have to dwell on that one
a bit longer.

And mondegreens... I forgot to mention in my last message that the subject
line (I blame it on myself) was what I was hearing for "I'm glad you're on
my side" for Taxi Ride. What was the other one... oh yeah - kiri ellasion
(or however it's spelt) for "her horizon". Or perhaps Mister Mister were
just tapping into my subconscious.

Linda - so agree on Snow Glass Apples. Now why isn't that made into a movie?
;)

What is with all these old folks re-emerging? :) Welcome back Jai and Kahlil
(not that you know me).

While I don't have a CD player in my car, it sounds like my old car stereo.
The right channel didn't work when playing tapes for years and it always
bugged me. I kept meaning to replace it but could never be bothered, until
one night when my car was broken into and it was stolen. I like to think
the joke was on the thieves and since then, I've had a stereo that plays
beautifully.

I think it was Arija. They create a completely different mood and I don't
think the harpsichord would be appropriate for any of the songs on the last
two albums. A harpsichord has too much of an "angry snatch" feel to it,
though personally I do prefer that angry snatch. In fact, any snatch is
fine by me.

On the subject of media reviews:

Woj just can't take a trick with you, can he? ;-) My personal preference
has always been if someone thinks an article is worth posting the link for,
they should include the text as well. Still living in a crappy modem
connection, I hate having to browse for something someone has told me is
worth reading. So I admit that I don't read every article posted as most of
them start to sound alike after a while, but what really annoys me is when
people treat the list as their own personal on-line journal. Get a blog or
a live-journal or whatever they're called and post a link to the list to
say it's been updated. I don't need to know if people have cleaned the lint
out of their belly buttons or not that day.

I doubt it too. Durango is a bit too macho for the name of a sports car
that is in the movie, but the name however is accurate as your standard SUV
driver is likely to be a road hog, whether it's intentional or not. I think
the same model is called Santa Fe here, as just about nobody's heard of
Durango. I'm still waiting to see milk bars with added tranquillizers.

A Clockwork Orange was only made available for the first time on video or
DVD two years ago, but you could see it at the cinema late night and it
would get regular airings. By today's standards, it is pretty tame, but
it's a whole lot more believable than a lot of movies which is a testament
to the strength of its satirical qualities.

Subject: There Is No Rose Of Swych Vertu

I went to a Demo yesterday. Or more precisely, I was a small part of the
floor show at a gothic concert - "The Feast of Immortality". FUN!!!!
They invited us funny-dressing loonies (ie: the SCA) to handle some of the
security issues (heavies in armour guarding door and the Mediaeval Baebes
:) and to entertain (with fighting, fencing, and dance) in between acts.

What a show. Okay so Tori wasn't there but do gothic people with Faerie
wings count for something at least? :)

Anyways good show. Got to see "The Mediaeval Baebes" and "Cirque
Vampyre". umm. I don't know how to decribe the first other than they're
-incredible- and I'd happily pay to see them again. (I'd like to meet
them again too the two I've met were fun people :)
Cirque Vampyre was a strange act though. All done up as vampires but one
- a young (umm early-mid teens?) girl who's done up to -look- naked (and
who's 'hunted' by the others as the show progresses. Very good acrobats
actually but dark and somewhat naughty. and VERY erotic in many
inappropriate ways - which fits. The performers were all ages from a
young girl (who looked like a ghost) to the slightly-older (looking) lady
who played the Master Vampire (and ends up losing her shirt at some
point). lessee. Master Vampire-lady. When she got really LOUD
bursts of fire would shoot up from the stage. Two buys (in kilts and
nothing else) who did various tricks for her. A couple (who had umm
clothing trouble *sillygrin*) who had a nack for WILD expressions and
danced some wild dances. Twin girls (young) who did wild gymnastics and
looked fierce. The ghostly girl I mentioned who had some neat looking
things with a veil and the girl who was being 'hunted' who did a show up
on red cloths hanging from the ceiling. The whole thing was half
smoke-covered and lit by different coloured lasers (green mostly) from
different points and backed with strange wild music some of which was sung
by different performers as well.

the last act I -can- describe. The first I can't, just too much
happened... other than most of the way through (near end of second cycle)
the Medieaval Baebes were dragged off by vampires.. The last act of theirs
was coming back as vampires.... this time backed by a Kodo drummer (nice
lady - met with a friend later).

och strange weekened
but I remember there's people who like some of this stuff here so I
thought I'd post...
Oh - I'm a dancer. I was in reds and yellows (mostly yellows :) in a sort
of quazi-16th century Spanish garb. Lots of fun. Gonna pick fencing back
up one of these days :)
We did one of the shows between acts. The last break between acts was the
Vampire lady who directed the whole show reading from a story.. a dark
nasty story that was very poetic...
The place was pretty packed btw, and lots of peoples in ALL kinds of
costumes. Friendly atmosphere. Oh, met lots of people I knew there that
weren't part of the show too. The lady I sat with during the last act for
instance was a friend from one of the dance groups - she was in this
-amazing- high-collared (as in higher than her head) gown low cut with
what looked like a vampire bite on her left breast and completely pale
skin. AMAZING costume she made apparently.... Fun person I chat with her
at dance frequently (in either French or Japanese or a mix of both...
she's studying both too :)

umm that's all.
Still haven't heard new Tori album. Will.
I recomend "The Rose" to anyone who likes "Mediaeval Baebes". One song
"The Sour Bush" is from "Cywydd Y Cedor" by Gwerful Mechain (15th
century). It was banned in Wales for a while and most poetry histories
won't list it.. VERY naughty. I think some folks here would like it :)
My favorite is "The Glass Window" which it turns out is sung by the lady
I met and got an autograph from *yay*.

actually I don't really understand the autographing thing all that well
(but I'll admit the only other autographs I've got is my copy of The
Northern Pike's "Snow In June" which my brother got autographed :)
Flip side meeting travellers is always fun. Like to compare stories :)

G'day, eh? :)

*blinkblink*

there's some serendipity to me deciding to read today's rdt. i have
several digests backed up, i've been too busy to keep up. and there's
more serendipity to the fact that i'm listening to "the mask and the
mirror" by loreena mckennitt right now. we're having the first snow
of the winter tonight and that always makes me want to hear "full
circle."

anyway, hello kahlil. how are you and do you remember me?

*grin*

andrea

(oh my. no tori content in this one. it should probably be a private
email. hrm... okay, how bout this. i saw ani tonight at the chicago
theater and she rocked. hard. it was a beautiful, beautiful powerful
moving incredible show. and tori's playing the same venue in a week
and a half and i can't imagine how that will be. it's small and
ornate and the ceiling glowed red. anyone going to those shows is in
for a major treat, i think. AND she played "on saturday afternoons in
1963" in wallingford last night which blows my mind. i adore that
cover, i remember it from 1996 and now i'm all hoping it'll get
played in chicago this time around.

okay, since we're dabbling in ancient history here, cyndi asked about
first tori concert experiences (as i saw from yesterday's digest
which i also just read.)

i saw her for the first time in 1994 at pick staiger concert hall at
northwestern university. now, this was way before i went to
northwestern but i was familar with the hall because my dad works at
northwestern and my family would go to high holiday services (rosh
hashannah and yom kippur) at hillel because we don't belong to a
congregation. i love the place, it was and still is loaded with very
tangible and potent memories. it was like seeing tori for the first
time in a sacred space. and i was thirteen and just in awe. i'd seen
a couple concerts before that one, pearl jam and counting crows i
think. but to be seeing tori was just ... transcendent. she opened
with "angie" and i swear the beginning chords were from "something i
can never have" by nine inch nails. i almost died because i'd wanted
to hear her cover that song. but i may be wrong, i haven't listened
to the tape of the show in years and years. she played winter and god
and cornflake with the hideous backing tracks and i cried during
"precious things." just her and the piano and maybe some flower
arrangements? maybe not. i wanted "here in my head." i wanted it so
bad. i called out for it during one of the lulls. i had bitch ass
seats, maybe three rows away from the back. and this was during the
age of the two shows a night tour and at the second show she played
"here in my head" and "yes anastasia." i wish i had stayed but i was
all of thirteen and those shows started late. i don't think, in
retrospect, that it was one of the strongest shows on the pink tour.
it was the second leg and i think she was getting burnt out. but i
loved every moment of it, it was an incredible night.

it's six AM but the sky is still dark because of the snow. i should
consider going to bed soon.)

>Just a few things - I am only starting to listen to Scarlet for the lyrics,
>but a few things popped out at me.

i'm still digesting the lyrics. i've found that i need to be careful
with the album. if i play it in the background i start getting tired
of the music and sort of bored with it. but if i give it my full
attention i get lost in the awesomeness. :)

<lyric talk>
>And when she sings "You just lift your lamp" in "Scarlet's Walk" I think of
>the Hermit card in the tarot, which was also used in the gatefold of Led
>Zeppelin IV

*grin* beth, you rock. i haven't spent much time looking at these
lyrics but when i heard the "you just lift your lamp" line i also
thought of the hermit card. however, i think the direct reference is
to the statue of liberty. (i'm not sure if i'm talking very old news.
i'm playing the catch up game and not in the mood to be very
thorough. i apologize if this is obnoxious to anyone. but look! i'm
posting!)

i should be sleeping but i think i'm in the mood to do a song by song
"scarlet's walk" write up. rock. i should be sleeping, or reading a
book for class, or god, something! but i've had such a perfect night,
i don't want it to end yet. anyway, i have the lyrics out and lesse...

amber waves - the thing i love most about this song is how it, when
put together with the map and story explanation, gives such a
tangible sense of place. i don't feel like i have the musical
terminology to explain exactly what i mean, but when she sings the
northern lights bit the entire song opens up to new levels. it's
about escape, to me, and knowing that sometimes, and for some people,
there really is none. it's about helping someone in the only way you
can sometimes; by going out and living your life in ways that they
can't, for whatever reason. if that makes sense.

a sorta fairytale - this one also feels like two songs at times. but
i think she's working with an extended metaphor- a romantic
relationship and our/her relationship with america (which, i think,
describes many of the songs on the album.) the line, "we're just
imposters in this country" resonates with the things she's saying
about the relationship, that it's not really working, that
something's wrong, that there needs to be a suspension of disbelief.
to be living in a sorta fairytale connotes being more aware of
reality than one might want to be, being unable to slip into the
fantasy. i love the last minute or two of this song.

wednesday - i really like the idea that this refers to the day after
the terrorist attacks, though looking at the bulk of the lyrics that
might be a stretch. it was strange, to start that day and sit on the
train on the way to work watching people reading their newspapers,
confronting the truth with every open page, sitting in silence,
overcome with sorrow. i think it also has to do with the character
from "american gods" but it's been too long since i read the book for
me to draw any conclusions.

strange - this song is growing on me in a big way but i don't get it
yet. i love the line, "maybe my wish knew better than I did," because
it makes me think of the dangers that can come from making wishes.
you have to be sure of what you want or else you just have to say,
"do what must be done, do what is right and i will deal with it."
(okay, i'm in a bit of a weird mood. but it makes sense to me.) most
of this song is more coherent and lyrically straightforward than just
about anything else tori's done. the entire album is like that. it's
refreshing.

okay, this is clearly a bigger project than i thought it would be and
this post is getting very long. i'll pick up later when i have some
more time.

Subject: last night's show

first: SHE PLAYED ONE SONG FROM PELE. one.

even with that aside, i was less than thrilled with her setlist. In my
opinion, she played too much off of her new album. i know that's the point
of the tour and all, but i really noticed tonight that a lot of her new
songs sound really alike. for example, at least four of them ended with her
not playing the piano and sustaining one note and then driving it up a
half-step. i found myself kinda spacing out at times.

also, in addition to only playing "in the springtime of his voodoo" she
played fucking JUAREZ. what??? first of all, i usually skip over that track
on tvab. just don't like it. second, i'm not sure that violently gyrating
and doing her general tori sexiness are the best things to be doing when
singing about girls getting raped and killed in mexico. also, she ended the
show with "past the mission". that song is such a crowd-killer. it's
definitely not the way to end the show with a bang. she also played
"honey", another song i'm not that thrilled over.

but let me move away from the bad, because there were some great, great
moments too. "cornflake girl" rocked, as did "hotel". i was really happy
to hear "spring haze" beacuse i love that song and everyone always forgets
about it. "i can't see new york" was great and powerful, if a little too
slow, and she did the one hand on each keyboard thing. the lighting and
visual effects were great on that song, and through the show in general.

during her solo set, her "roadside cafe" sign descended and she sang a
little bit about it, cute, but with a beautiful line, something about "i
feel him here". and she played a beautiful song that i didn't know, and the
dent tells me it's "on saturday afternoons in 1963". also, during her first
encore, she played "songbird" by fleetwood mac, which was AMAZING. icicle,
which i heard last year, still amazing as always.

one thing that really surprised me was how little she spoke. in fact, she
only spoke once to the audience, and she said "i love playing here, i was
just telling my husband how much i love playing here." then she introduced
her band and that was it. no little stories, cute anecdotes. hmmm.

during "voodoo" during the "mr sulu, warp speed" etc. part, on the album she
just screams that, going from head to chest voice, with her banshee wails
and all... and last night she just kept it all in her head voice. it seems
like all that anger is gone; had she played more pele, would i have been
disappointed? i'm seeing her again tonight in providence, we'll see.

on the way to the theatre we were behind a white stretch limo for a while,
and then it passed and let us go in front of it. but it drove almost all
the way to the theatre with us, and then turned and went around to the back
of the theatre. we're pretty sure it was tori, going out for a hamburger or
something.

form of Crazy. cuz that's what the song's about.. a man who's veryyyyyy
seductive to Scarlet even tho she knows it isn't gonna last.

Then Linda said: "I think I need to give this album time to grow on me."
we ALL do, actually.. :) someone.. I think someone in HERE in
fact.. said "the slow flames burn the longest".. quite true. :D I agree
with that actually.. Hey Jupiter (album cut) was a nice slow flame. the
video and the Dakota version (same thing. lol) was just that slow flame
with a bit of lighter fluid doused on it. :D

Julie, glad to hear that you can confide in us. I know I can. :D

and on that note.. *fwoosh!* cya! :D

Hello! How's everyone?

I'm hanging in, wishing for vacation to get here so I can *unwind*

I don't know about everyone else, but I've been reading some disturbing
things about Tori's new "Darth Vadar"' habit. Unfortunately, I didn't get to
see her when she came to Florida because I didn't have the time nor the mula
to drive up north (I live in Miami), so I can't say I've heard her do this.
But after reading it in the latest RDTRN, I was shocked! Have you guys heard
her do this? It's probably not all that bad. People always make such a huge
deal out of nothing.

I nearly threw a college newspaper across the room last night after reading
their horrible review on SW. I'm sick of no-good writers/wanna-be critics
slamming her stuff. I won't bother posting the review because it will
probably cause you to punch your computer monitor in. But suffice it to say
that they were of the opinion that she was "selling out" with this album.
UGH! But we all have freedom of speech as well as the freedom to have our
own opinions, right??

Right.

xoxo
Belle

At what point exactly did I subscribe to a clipping service? Here's a 39k
digest with 10 posts and six of them are articles? I just read the four
actual posts in about five minutes.

It's like seeing a nice juicy pork bun and biting into it to find 90% bun
and 10% pork.

Which is pretty standard for a pork bun, but disappointing for an RDTRN
digest.

I never read the story (though I think I saw a version of it on TV when I
was young), but when I saw the Star Trek movie I had a feeling that line
came from somewhere, so I searched on google.

Still one of my all-time favorite albums. "Make me Over" did make the
rest of "Celebrity Skin" rather a letdown, I will admit.

> how far was Madonna stripping herself emotionally is a theme to

The album where Madonna really revealed more of herself (at least of the
ones I've heard, I gave up a few years ago) was "Like a Prayer," which
I've always thought of as the missing Tori album, since the concerns and
even some of the images are very similar.

It also contains one of my all-time favorite divorce songs.

> But a ballet dancer-turned-stripper??? How cliche.

Guess that shows that if you're going to take a character from
movie, you're better off if you start with a better movie. :-)

> A Sorta Fairytale-- I've heard this song so much on the radio.
> That's what it is: a radio song. Pretty, though.

I like it a little better than you do, I think, just because it has actual
hooks, which most of the album doesn't. I'm not wedded to songcraft as
the ultimate goal of songwriting, but it is nice to hear a catchy hook now
and again. I never listen to "To Venus and Back" anymore, but I listen to
"Bliss" a lot.

> I think Carbon may be my favorite song on the album. :-)

I haven't got far enough to think in those terms, but it's definitely a
candidate.

> Crazy-- if you name a song "Crazy", don't do a lazy
> boring moan thing the whole time, thank you. *yawn*

Ooooh, well put. I just listened to "Carbon" again after reading your
comments, and then it continued into "Crazy" and the letdown was extreme.

> Uhm, and could she please not be so straight-forward with her lyrics?

I don't hear that complaint very often, especially these days.

> I wish I can't see NY were just piano, without the "arp"
> (???whateverthatis???).

Arp is a synthesizer, and I agree completely. It would have been much
more dramatic to have it stark and spare. Like finally hearing the plain
version of "Long and Winding Road" in the movie "Let it Be" after hearing
the orchestral version on the album. It lets the song breathe.

Ooops, out of time.

As B/4,

John
