Amos Connects With Audience
November 18, 2002
By ERIC R. DANTON, Courant Rock Critic
Large crowd, small crowd - Tori Amos captivates them all.
With her riveting stage presence, sly humor and restless energy, Amos holds
her audiences rapt, mesmerizing them with quirky piano and her breathy voice.
On tour with a compelling new album, "Scarlet's Walk," Amos performed twice
in Connecticut Saturday. The first stop came Saturday afternoon at
Tapeworks, a Hartford recording studio, where the red-headed singer and
songwriter performed as part of the Acoustic Cafe series sponsored by
WTIC-FM (96.5). About 40 contest winners squeezed into the studio to hear
Amos sing four tunes from the new album.
Later Saturday, she played for nearly two hours with her band in
Wallingford at the careerbuilder.com Oakdale Theatre before a crowd of more
than 4,000 people.
The performances displayed different aspects of her range. The radio gig
showed Amos at her barest, singing a heartbreaking version of "A Sorta
Fairytale" and a stark "Pancake."
Those songs turned out much differently when the band played them at the
later show, but her drummer and bass player added flavor to "Strange," also
from the new album, and helped to propel the bouncy "Wednesday." Amos also
played a brief solo set on piano at the Oakdale show, which included the
concert mainstay "Icicle" and "Baker Baker."
She was always in motion on stage, standing up, sitting down, crossing and
uncrossing her legs while playing and switching between a stately grand
piano and warm-sounding Fender Rhodes- and Wurlitzer-style keyboards.
Her audience, mostly young and mostly women, listened with an attentiveness
unusual among concertgoers, bursting into applause and cheers for their
favorites. The crowd seemed to already know most of the new songs, and
welcomed such older tunes as "Crucify" and "Cornflake Girl."

Storyteller reveals her emotional journeys
11/18/2002
BY VAUGHN WATSON
Journal Pop Music Writer
PROVIDENCE -- Pianist and singer Tori Amos writes songs that play out as
stories scrawled in loose-leaf notebooks, then left opened to the tough
parts. Amos is fueled by cloudbursts of emotional angst. She lingers on its
cause only long enough to detail the consequence to follow. Like an Alice
Sebold novel, Amos's delivery is a bracing plain speak. Her themes, from
psychological abuse to physical abandonment, can be as tough to hear as
they were for her protagonists to endure.
Last night she held down a sterling set of those songs in a sold-out
concert at the Providence Performing Arts Center. The sellout crowd was a
statement itself; you don't hear Amos's latest songs all over the radio
anymore. But she's a populist poet nonetheless, speaking on what others don't.
"Figures that my courage would choose to sell out now," she sang in "Crucify."
The character of that song loathes self-consciousness. Amos performed that
song with the house lights on the audience; the point was that this was
group healing.
Performing solo at the piano, she was a one-on-one storyteller, chronicling
bad relationships and shattered and sheltered lives. She moved from
cheerful to cheerless in the space of a piano line.
As a songwriter-pianist, she is tethered to her piano. Still, she managed
to expand the meaning of songs with expressions. She made over-the-shoulder
glances, playful and suggestive. At one point she straddled the piano
bench, playing piano with her right hand, and separately a keyboard with
her left.
The point was that Amos plans to tackle every role, the seeker and the
fulfilled.
When a bassist and drummer completed her trio, Amos's group played as the
pendular opposite of the soloist. She was as bold and bad as she wanted to
be. The trio setup allowed for some of the sonic experimentation of her
latest disk, a concept album called Scarlet's Walk. On it, Amos portrays
Scarlet, a woman who literally walks across America, after Sept. 11, to
hear its stories. The trio played songs pulled from different regions,
funky Austin, Tex., blues to foot-stomping Western swing on "Wednesday."
As always, the lyrics, ill-tempered and patriotic on Amos's terms, woke up
the songs. "You give me yours, I'll give you mine," she sang. "Cause I can
look your God right in the eye."
Pop vocalists of the 1930s and '40s sang love songs dabbed with piano jazz,
and Amos is a musical heiress of that style. Except you can't call her
explosive storytelling and piano work, which drops crashing improv bombs
like little earthquakes, simply torch songs. Amos is a scorch-song balladeer.

Today rocks! I had such a good day!
I had a lot of fun just chatting with people in my science class...see, a
lot of people in there speak Spanish and I am an aspiring fluent Spanish
speaker so I like to practice conversations with them. Also, there are
other people in that class that I usually don't like, but I had pretty
pleasant conversations with them.
Although I get pissed off in math class when Latisha talks too damn much. I
cannot stand her.
In history I had a pretty nice time, learning and interacting with people.
Spanish was okay...I won a jolly ranger sucker along with my aisle because
we won a Spanish contest type thing. So that was gooda.
I ate lunch with Maria instead of Julie P. (I told Julie that I would sit
with her today but I felt like sitting with Maria today...I told Julie about
it later).
I had okay study halls.
In English I was so tired but I had fun chatting with my friends Tia, Elena,
and Maria. I feel so bad for Maria and Elena...they work so much. They
really overwork themselves, I think it's cruel how much work get stacked on
top of them. They don't have anytime for anything but work and sports...and
some sleeping.
Alright, are you ready for the part that rocks my day like crazy! Here we
go...
I
AM
GOING
TO
MEET
TORI AMOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I swear, my brother told me after school that we're going to go to the
concert super-duper early and she does meet-n-greets, so we're gonna meet
and greet her! I don't even know what I'm going to say...I love her so
much...I hope I don't faint or go speechless. I'm going to write her a
letter and I hope she reads it, but even if she doesn't, I'll still get to
meet her...OMG! I'm so excited!

Hi Holly, well my in Tori's description of the song she says it is about 2
girl friends that are splitting apart. That's also what I think of it.
It's a song that's very close my heart because it makes me think of my
ex-best friend, Nicole. Having friends being there for each other all these
years and then it just ends and they feel like they're invisible to each
other.

John Denofa was found guilty by a jury of his peers in 1 hour and 50 minutes
of deliberation. I truly hope that he gets sent to a prison where there has
been a lot of publicity on this horrendous crime and the inmates can issue a
little extra "justice" on behalf of Rachel.

Just a quick aside to all:
I came on board here in 97 and started the whole Gray Ears thing because it
felt like I was the oldest one posting (at 36). Then all the old people
came out of the Arty Turner closet and it was so nice to see I wasn't the
oldest. We became "Gray Ears" until someone made a stink about it (ageism I
believe it was called), so I dropped the whole thing. So nice to be
randomly reminded of things. ;)

unsubscribed is because i was had stopped reading the digests. (lack of

back, and i just wanted to say a couple of things. 1.) its neat to see that
some of the old "regulars" still post a lot. just one of those comforting
things about this mailing list. 2.) i've decided that i like SW. i like all
of tori's albums and i think its because i like to be able to say, "okay,
i'm (insert mood here). im going to go listen to (insert album here)." I can
go to my collection and pull out something of tori's, because, to me, each
album has a different feeling. i like options. i've listened to tori back
since BfP and i was a little disappointed with tvab and slg because i just
couldnt get into them. believe me, i tried. but the more i listen to SW, the
more i *want* to listen to it. thats a good sign for me. so anyway, im off
to work, i just wanted to say that.

Subject: the next night
wow.
i am so glad i went to both shows.
the night after wallingford, i went to providence, and was completely blown
away. it's amazing how much good seats can change your enjoyment level of a
concert. in wallingford i was in the back of the orchestra of a huge arena.
the waaaaay back, one row from the wall. although the sound and visuals
were great, tori was a little speck; they may as well have piped her in
through big screen TVs. anyway, sunday night in providence we were much,
much closer to the stage, right on the aisle on the left, so i could see her
face and the piano perfectly, without having to sit on my feet or crane my
neck in anyway. (side note: why is it so important to have to SEE during a
concert - it's the music you're going for, isn't it? (haha, i know that's
not true, just wondering what people think)).
so she opened with wampum prayer again and then right into a sorta
fairytale, which was the same as the night before. i guess that's a good
tactic, easing into a show, but, again, i was a bit spacy during a sorta
fairytale, and then she came on with "take to the sky" which i heard the
night before and enjoyed even more this time. the audience was MUCH MUCH
more polite and respectful than connecticut, which once again proves my
point that everyone in connecticut sucks and has no concept of anyone but
themselves (born and raised here, baby). i also suspect that since
providence is the home of several universities, the average age of the
audience was higher.
so the first 8 songs were either new songs from the album or songs she'd
played the night before. i was beginning to get a little worried, but then
i thought maybe she was doing it this way to get those songs out of the way
so she could surprise everyone... and i think i was right. with the band,
she played black dove, little amsterdam, HORSES (cool band version, though i
didn't like it as much as the solo piano, of course), fucking CAUGHT A LITE
SNEEZE (i even managed to love it with the wurlitzer in for the harpsichord)
, little amsterdam, spring haze. the pele was much, much appreciated. for
her solo set she played "boys in the trees" which i'd never heard before,
winter (always a favorite, though, again, she took it too slowly) and MERMAN
(i got teary).
the best part though was her second encore, which was tear in your hand and
angie, both with the band. it was the perfect, perfect way to end the show
and my tori experience for 2002. also, during this encore, a lot of the
audience went up and stood at the front of the stage and in the aisles, and
they were unhindered by security. it was truly beautiful.
i was with my boyfriend at the providence show, who is not a tori fan in the
way that i am (he hears tori when i put her on around the house, and he's
enjoyed the new album with me). i was interested to know his reaction to
the show, and he said he absolutely LOVED it, which cements my idea that
tori is such a great, great live performer. he said that usually when he's
at concerts (and i feel this way too) where he isn't familiar with all the
songs of the artist, he spaces out or loses interest or doesn't enjoy it as
much as he would if he knew all the words. he said that at this show,
however, he was rapt, that tori's vocals and piano technique (he's a
pianist) and the way she interacted with the band was more than enough to
keep him spellbound. he said, though, that the best part of the show was
during one of the encores when i turned to him and smiled because, he said,
he could see exactly how much i was enjoying the show, and what seeing tori
meant to me, and that made it all greater for him (ewwwwww... cheese).
it's true; being at this show in particular reminded me of a time when
tori's music was REALLY important to me, as in defining parts of myself.
while i don't feel that way about her anymore, as in i dont depend on tori
the way i did when i was in high school or in my "formative years" or going
through general teenaged angst (not that i'm too far out of my teenage
years, jesus), i recognize that i used to feel that way and i'm not ashamed
of it. it was a comfort feeling to see that though my attitude toward tori
amos' music has changed, i can still love it.
all in all, an amazing show - my only complaint was on a sorta fairytale,
the balance was all off. the bass was way, WAY too high, and her voice and
piano were too far back in the mix. i was worried that it was going to be
like that the whole show, but the sound guys fixed it by the very next song
(although, i have to say, the bass was really damn loud the whole show -
sometimes unnecessarily so.)
SO glad for both shows - can't wait for radio city in march!

Alright I'm coming to my fellow Arty Turners. I need your help. I need
people to explain the Pele phenomenon to me. I just don't get it. Why do
so many people in the Tori community adore Pele? Please, I'm looking for
answers. I really really enjoy the album. And yes I "get it" so please
don't tell me to look deeper. I really want to hear why everyone loves it
so much. It seems to me that it has something to do with its raw anger, but
there has to be more to it than that.
For the record my favorite album is Little Earthquakes, but mostly for
sentimental personal reasons than anything else.
I think her best album is Scarlet's Walk, or maybe Pink. I agree with
Bethey (wow I think that's a first) that Scarlet just has so many layers to
dig through. It appears so straightforward but there's way more going on.
And it isn't really a happy album either, sad and thoughtful really.
Though the endings do get a bit old after awhile, it does kind of force you
to keep listening, to continue on with Scarlet as she walks on her path.
Very Belated congrats to Lavs on her new little wonder. I tried to send you
something when I first heard, but it bounced.
Gareth will be nine-months old tomorrow. He crawls and climbs and has
become very attached to me. One might think I would just love this new
found attachment, but really, it's kind of annoying.
Anyhoo, please please enlighten me!! ;)

Not having seen _Fight Club_, I wouldn't know. It's a global chain of
furniture stores found, in America, mostly on the East and West Coasts
(there's one store each in Houston and Chicago); they're mostly famous
for Swedish Modern furniture which one assembles (and sometimes
finishes) at home...I've never heard of a 'Horchow collection' there.
Douglas Coupland mentions IKEA in _Generation X_, where he (perhaps
uncharitably) characterizes their products as "semi-disposable Swedish
furniture," and includes an illustration of a chair (probably from
their discontinued "Idala" series). The stuff may be not be as
inexpensive as it once was, but it's still good product from a very
good corporate citizen--better than Wal-Mart at any rate.
You can go to www.ikea-usa.com (or www.ikea.co.se) to find a store or
order online. There's even one in Sydney!
Also you mentioned Toni Braxton:

> she

> er.. like Toni Braxton? what happened to HER?
Toni Braxton was an R&B/pop singer, quite popular in the early and mid
1990s, who--because of personal naivete and/or incompetent legal
counsel--ended up owing millions to her record company, pauperized by
her own success. She is still involved in litigation in an attempt to
get some relief.
Reading Linda's opinion in RDTRN 1751 I see another possible
explanation for the apparent initial "blandness" of SW, which is
revealed to be not bland at all on further listening...
Shifting gears (literally), one comes to...the Dodge Durango:
(from Brian Cooper in RDTRN 1750)

To make things even more confusing, in America there's also an SUV
called Santa Fe, made by Hyundai. We seem to have a plague of the
blasted things (and their drivers!) here, as you've doubtless noticed.
Hyundai's Santa Fe has nothing to do with the Durango, or Chrysler, _A
Clockwork Orange_, the city in New Mexico, the Catholic Church, or
Stanley Kubrick.
We don't have milk bars with tranquilizers, but we do have granola
bars with caffeine. We also have Bible Bars ("see Deuteronomy 8:8 for
ingredients and nutrition information"--this is an actual quote from
the wrapper). Finally, in RDTRN 1751, John Bragazzi (of the Groovin'
Bragazzi Brothers?) mentioned something he called cut-ups:

An easier way to accomplish this verbal collage, if you have access to
a Unix (Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X, etc.) system with Emacs installed,
would be to ftp the text from Gutenberg and then run Dissociated Press
on it. Of course, as with physical collaging, most of the time what
you'll get will be gibberish. Fun-o. Especially at parties.
Finally, Simon Booth mentioned the Saturn V at the Space Center. I was
told that it was intended for use with Apollo 18; along with a complete
launch vehicle (less the Lunar Module) there were engines from all
three stages on display. (When asked about reviving the Saturn V, I was
told it was "tied up in patent issues with Rocketdyne and Lockheed
Martin." Patent issues? For a government project?! What, is NASA now a
private company? I missed the IPO!)
As for a current rocket with similar capabilities, the Russian
"Energiya" has been used for the purpose; it has been employed (once)
in the construction of the space station, and will most likely be used
for the manned Mars project. (Yes, that's the same "N-1" the Soviets
intended to use for their moon landing. It blew up on the launch pad.
If at first you don't succeed...)
naked I Hyundai blandness it confusing a www.ikea.co.se Bible made;
with Estraven On semi-disposable road caffeine Groovin' did, the Tori
Church has made blasted NASA hog granola,
Pornography.
P.S. Am I imagining things, or has Jai Nelson returned?

As you probably know by now, John Denofa, the man arrested and
charged with her murder was found guilty. The jury deliberated only
two hours before reaching this verdict.
I can understand the frustration you feel about how Denofa's lawyers
found it necessary to put her lifestyle on trial. Personally, I
believe that their intent was to say that it could have been one of
her other clients. In a murder case with no documentable motive
(which was one of the facts of this particular case), can you fault
the defendant for trying to say that the crime was committed by
someone else?
But that was only their intent. In reality, though, it must have
come off as looking too desperate for the jury. I mean, really,
someone gets murdered. Are we supposed to feel that, because she was
an exotic dancer, that it makes her murder more justifiable than if
she were, say, a clerk at Penney's? The defense attorneys were
foolish. They had nothing to work with and they knew it. The
prosecutors knew it. And the jury saw straight through it.
Nothing that happened during that trial will bring Rachel back. But
you can find consolation in the way the trial ultimately ended. Take
the short jury deliberation time (did they deliberate long enough to
learn each other's names?) as a repudiation of everything done by the
defense. Rachel's lifestyle was fine, normal, and acceptable. It
sends a message to anyone who would consider violence against her
colleagues and those who would follow her in the profession.

First off, big congratulations to Jim (the one who's getting married).
I thought Linda had some *very* interesting comments on Scarlet's Walk,
taking off from Arija's comment about the show she saw.
First off, I agree that there is a lot less pain and anger on this album.
And it's always an interesting challenge to portray happiness, or goodness,
in a compelling way, in any medium. Alanis faced this as well, when she
didn't want to produce more and more clones of "Jagged LIttle Pill." (And
a good thing she didn't, since, unlike Tori, the work that made her famous
isn't really very good, and she's doing much more interesting and powerful
work now). And I remember Liz Phair's second album, where it always
sounded like the curse words were stuck in because they were expected, not
because they belonged there.
However, I don't think I'd say Tori sounds happy, exactly. (I'm not saying
anything about whether Tori herself *is* happy or not, her personal life
and emotions are none of my business). The album sounds quiet and
contemplative and slightly sad, definitely not happy. But a little more
detached (in the psychological sense) than a lot of her earlier work (Boys
for Pele and before, say).
And I think if there are some earlier songs which Tori doesn't play
anymore, maybe because that's not where her mind and heart are, that's
fine. I agree with Arija, I'd rather not hear a song at all than hear a
version which would disappoint me for that reason. And, after all, Tori
has a deep, deep songbook. She'll pull out something good.
Secondly, it is also a very good observation that, in general, Tori's songs
have slowly become more concerned with the outer world than the inner.
This is the progression a lot of artists follow, because it's the
progression of a human life.
It goes to show what I said, I find more interesting and informed and
challenging writing about Tori here than anywhere else.
As B/4,
John
