Subject: 11 days to lose the ashes

howdy

cyndi asked about the bleeding eye problem i've been experiencing for the
past couple of weeks. the doctors say it should go away of its own accord
within a month, and the only thing i have to worry about is the chance that
i might be left with scarring - an unpleasant thought and one on which i
prefer not to dwell, thankyouverymuch... apparently it's something which is
not uncommon in very short-sighted people (both my eyes are in the minus
20s, for those of you to whom that means anything).

since brian and i first began our cricketing discussions, the england team
has gone from being pretty awful to a total shambles. being from the
northern hemisphere, i could blame it on the fact that something like nine
of our first-choice players have been injured since the tour started - i
think that jones and silverwood both getting crocked *during tests* is just
plain bad luck. but the truth of the matter is that not a single one of our
players has performed at anything like the standard required of
international professional athletes. everybody knew we couldn't bowl even
before this winter, but at least we felt like we could handle the bat with
some confidence. however our middle and lower order have been dreadful and
even the "big guns" (like vaughan and trescothink) have failed to deliver
the goods on a regular basis. perhaps the most embarrassing statistic is
that we lost a 5-match series scheduled to last 25 days in less than 11.
shocking. and yet we still refuse to let the ashes themselves leave the
MCC, even though the aussies have just retained them for the eighth
consecutive series.

reed darsy asked:

"isn't this the only album with a song having the name
of the album itself?"

er, little earthquakes? and SLG's only one letter away. but lots of people
have probably said that already.

reed also said that SW "can be simply played from start to finish without
'surprises'". i'm not 100% sure i agree with you there, reed, i'm afraid.
admittedly, there isn't the same degree of shifts within individual songs as
we saw on earlier albums, and some other people have felt that SW is rather
one-paced. but i certainly jumped to attention pretty sharpish when i first
came to "wampum prayer" and the changes of mood in "carbon" had a similar
effect. the musical jolliness (for want of a better word) of "wednesday"
was a nice surprise too.

Alfie: "shadows? on me lungs? i'm being eaten away! this is the end of
me! oh god in heaven help me!" (as sampled on carter the unstoppable sex
machine's seminal album, "30 something")

"Now I sleep with a horse named Clyde."

crikey, it's a good job i didn't just see that one sentence by itself,
violet... :o)

someone (was it john b?) described "marianne", "caught a lite sneeze" and
"mohammed..." as the best 3-song segue on any tori album. i'm not a huge
"mohammed" fan, but it got me thinking about other threesomes. a few of my
favourites are:

professional widow - mr. zebra - marianne
black-dove - raspberry swirl - jackie's strength
winter - happy phantom - china
a sorta fairytale - wednesday - strange

ok, i don't normally do this, but what the hell...

1. Which is your favourite album?
Little Earthquakes, but Choirgirl runs a very close second

2. Best album art?
BfP by miles

3. Best album title?
Hmmm, not sure about this one. I rather like "To Venus and Back" - the
album itself ventures into new territory but revisits familiar friends on
the live cd

4. All time fave tori song?
am i only allowed to give one answer? if so, it'd have to be "winter", but
that seems so unfair to "1000 oceans", "northern lad", "silent all these
years", "marianne", "putting the damage on", "your cloud", "hey jupiter" and
the rest.

5. Fave song from...
Little Earthquakes? "winter"
Under the Pink? probably "pretty good year"
Boys For Pele? "hey jupiter"
>From the Choirgirl Hotel? "northern lad"
To Venus and Back? "1000 oceans"
Strange Little Girls? "rattlesnakes"
Scarlet's Walk? "your cloud"

6. What was your first fave Tori song?
"silent all these years" was the reason i bought "little earthquakes" and
started this love affair with tori in the first place.

7. Have you ever named a cat/car/plant after a Tori song?
i've never owned either a cat or a car, and i'm bad at taking care of
plants, so i tend not to get too attached to them just in case...

8. What other things has Tori turned you on to?
neil (i think this will be a common answer here), also the cure - after i
heard tori cover "lovesong" - "disintegration" remains in my humble opinion
one of the top five greatest albums of all time. this list - and the people
on it - are at least partially responsible for me getting to know (and in
some cases love) a whole bunch of people including sarah mclachlan, ani
difranco and most importantly suzanne vega.

criminy, i've just read coops' responses to these same questions. i didn't
copy you mate, honest, i guess we both just have impeccable taste ;-)

re: women in rock - does anyone know if tanya donelly, or kristin hersh, or
kim deal, or juliana hatfield, or liz phair got a mention in there? it
sounds to me like rolling stone has finally gone senile.

that'll be all for now

matt

Subject: trying to help RAINN

I need your help, you guys.. here's the deal:

I am doing a psychology project--and trying to kill two birds
with one stone with it.. the project involves observing people in certain
situations, so I had the idea of having myself and my two partners in the
project go around and ask people to sign a petition to increase awareness
of the fact that RAINN and other rape crisis centers do exist. I
originally wanted us to go around and ask for donations, but after I
spoke to my teacher about that idea, she informed me that it was a lot
riskier (with getting into trouble, etc) than maybe trying to have people
sign a petition.
so.. after we do this for our grade in the class, I want to
continue with this and send the signed petitions to somebody to actually
follow through on the whole project, so who should I send the petition
to? I was thinking of sending it to RAINN but that didn't sound like it
would work after I thought about it, so I'd appreciate some information
and tips on who to send it to instead. ANY help at all would really be
appreciated.. so.. pleaaaaaaaase? :) thanks! :D

fuzzy Winterlion said: "Memories of the Feast of Immortality are still
good and I've been reading Anne Rice. uh "The Witching Hour" series.
Prolly someone here knows it..."
nope, never heard of it. I know of Anne Rice tho.. I've only
heard of her Vampire chronicles tho.. never seen the movies, haven't read
the books, etc..

Ade said: "Anyway, today I got really envious of all the people who got
to go to Tori concerts this year and meet Tori and get Tori hugs, etc.
So I came up with a PLAN. I'm going to write and publish an amazing
novel that will get me up on the bestsellers list, and I can move to
Cornwall on the royalties. I'll move next door to Tori, and I'll invite
her over for tea all the time, babysit Tash, become really good friends
with her, etc. And of course, I'll invite all of you over so we can
party with Tori! *sigh* In my wildest dreams..."
hey now even wildest dreams come true! I'LL HELP!!!!!!!!!

Megan did the survey.. and.. "3. Best album title? To Venus and Back...
Good album title that goes along with the techno-spaced out sounds."
you know, it really bugs me out in a weird (good tho) way how I
just think of outer space so much when listening to or thinking of TVAB..
o_O it really really really trips me out. lol..

Megan then commented: "I'm writing a story about a mermaid who kills her
children. I'm so fucking great! Hehehe.... self-esteem is an excellent
thing!"
show it off when it's done!! me wanna seeeee!!!
littlebluegirl said from the survey: "Ooh one of my fav things I learned
from her was how to play the piano looking all sultry! Its the whole left
foot on the right pedal. It cracks me up, but its actually more
comfortable when you are short."
o_O huh.. kewl.. I'm 5'7".. shortest one in my family. lol.. does
that count? or am I too tall? lol.. lucky you got to meet Tori! I'LL MEET
HER YET! :P
and uh.. that's pretty much all I can think of to say so.. uh..
*MWAH!* g'night everybody! *dives into a closed window and bonks self on
head* ow! I have GOT to stop doing that. *stumbles out the door and falls
down the stairs* ... I'm okay.
