I have two tickets to the Saturday March 8th show at Radio city Music Hall,
but I can't make it to this show. I'd like to trade them for two tickets
to the Friday March 7th show.
They are orchestra seats (Row F, 205-206) and I'm looking for similar seats
in exchange.
email me at josh@mit.edu and we'll make the deal. I can meet you anywhere
in the NY area.

Subject: Bombing for Peace...
...is like Fucking for Virginity.
This is one of the quotes shared at an Open Forum for Peace that happened on
Wednesday 2/26 at Cedar Crest College. It was a powerful rally, and I was
privileged to be a speaker. I actually used the rebuttal (I agree with
Pogo) I wrote to the article by Horowitz (regarding right minded Americans
and being pro-war). I shared those thoughts about fascism and then read my
poem "New Normal". I think it was well received (but they could just have
been being polite), but it was no where near as powerful as a young girl's
impromptu speech. A pretty little blond freshman stood up and apologized
for not having prepared anything but just wanted to share a story that
happened to her in the past week. Her mother called and said, "Tracy, I
have some news. Your Uncle is shipping out to Turkey." Tracy was a bit
upset, but realized as a career army man, it was his job. "But Tracy, your
step-father is shipping out to Kuwait." Tracy was more upset, but
understood. Then, "Tracy, your little brother is starting basic training
soon." Tracy had tears in her eyes as she lamented, "My Little brother, my
little brother" holding her hand up to where he must have stood at age 6.
"You are supposed to care for your younger siblings. How can I take care of
him if he's sent away to war?" Just a small part of the pain of war is
brilliantly illustrated in Tracy's story. Families torn apart.
On the day we invade Iraq, there is an Emergency Action Plan for people to
gather together at local parks and bridges at 6PM (2PM if on a weekend). To
gather in a sign of disapproval. More and more citizens are realizing that
President Bush's plans are dangerous and need to be rethought. Saddam
didn't cause 9/11, but our actions against Saddam will cause events that
make 9/11 look like a scraped knee. If enough people continue to protest,
this will give Bush a chance to back down without losing face. I just
wonder if he is intelligent enough to realize that.
I keep hearing the Pro-attack group ask, what else do we do? We keep
pressure on with inspectors. Saddam can't build, use or sell anything with
the world watching his every move. If the UN decides that this isn't
working, and war is the only option, I will be supporting the troops facing
the madness. I will not support a fascist leader in his attempts to change
the world in his father's image. I can't believe George continues to talk
about "civilized countries" telling Iraq what to do, as if Iraq is some
backwards third world nation. Could someone let George know that Iraq is
actually the cradle of civilization, that the lives we lead today are
directly attributable to the advances made in that ancient country. I know
he didn't pay attention in his history classes, so I'll forgive his
ignorance.
And for anyone yelling about human rights abuses: Yes, I'm very concerned
about human rights in Iraq. And Saudi Arabia. And China. And North Korea.
And the US. And, And and etc. I don't see anyone else up in arms about the
Saudi's murder of school girls last summer. Their school caught ablaze, but
because they weren't wearing their head scarf's, the religious police
refused to let them out of the burning building and kept firefighters from
rescuing them. Who is screaming about that?
Lastly, but not leastly: Who financed the terrorists on September 11, 2001?
I'm not sure, but Prez GWB gave the Taliban $40 Million for pipeline rights
in May, 2001. Does that give you pause?
Fairy Blessings,
Bethey

Subject: the promised Tori post
I realized while posting about Brad's war articles that I've never posted
here so much as a word about what I thought about Scarlet's Walk or the
current tour! I did try to do that, but I was getting frustrated because
this list doesn't accept messages directly from my AOL, due to HTML I
guess. But now that I've finally figured out how to do it (I do it from
"AOL Anywhere" via the Web; these messages don't have all the bells and
whistles), I shall weigh in. Belatedly, yes, but hell, the tour is still
going on!
I think that SW is Tori's best album since BfP, and arguably her best ever,
although I still prefer BfP personally just because it's so fucking psycho.
:-) SW is a more mature and contemplative work, but that's appropriate;
hell, the woman has a kid and is pushing 40. But the album is SO rich and
varied and lovely. Sure, it's ambitious to the point of pretention at
times, but hell, as Elvis Costello once said, never go further than far too
far. We need MORE ambition in pop music.
There's not a bad song on the album, but I of course have faves. "Amber
Waves" is a sad and lovely song, and "A Sorta Fairytale" is just a neat
song to listen to while driving. I adore the sweet little shuffle that is
"Wednesday", although it's marred by a dumb final line. "Pancake" is gritty
and growly and pissed off, and I like Tori pissed off. And the Kevyn songs
- "Mrs. Jesus" and "Taxi Ride" - are a lovely tribute, and lovely in
themselves.
But as much as I like the album, I like the tour even better. I saw five
shows on the first leg - La Jolla, the two Los Angeles shows, and the two
San Francisco shows. (Saw my old Bay Area Tori homies, including some of
you all!) If you're interested in my reviews of the shows, they are up at
the Dent. But in general, I think this is EASILY her best plugged tour.
Nothing against Caton, but the keyboard/bass/drum thing just works so well,
and Tori just seems so in tune with Jon and Matt.
It's hard even to remember now which show was the "best", because great
moments were sprinkled throughout all the shows, and the fact that all five
shows happened in eight days makes them sorta blend together in the memory
to an extent. But I think the show that was most special to me personally
was the second San Francisco show. I went out to dinner beforehand with
some lovely people, and I was there with two close friends who I had taken
to an earlier show, at the Paramount in Oakland in 1996. (One of them, I
had seen many Tori shows with, including the first one I saw way back in
1992. Over a decade ago!) And she was especially on that night. AND, there
was that now-legendary moment toward the end where she confronted the idiot
who was interrupting her lovely "Gold Dust" rendition by yelling out
requests for "Silent All These Years", dropping in a "Fuck you" without
missing a beat and then finishing the song. As I said before, I like Tori
pissed off. :-)
And one other neat thing from the tour was that I got to see her perform on
the Craig Kilborn show! If you have a tape of the show, I'm on audience
left a few rows up. Big fat balding guy. :-) (The young woman next to me
with the short blonde hair is my friend Colette, who I met oniine over at
@forumz - where I spend most of my online time these days - and who has
become a close IRL friend. She may be the smartest person I've ever met.
I'd love to see her argue the war with Brad. She'd make him cry. :-)) That
was a really fun experience overall, and it was great to be one of those
people who pack Tori's talk show appearances and shower her with love!
And you know, she really does deserve it. I'm ten years into my Tori
fandom, and it still feels like home to me. Sure, there may be other
artists whose music I like even more. (These days, I think the savior of
music is Conor Oberst, the guy from Omaha who has TWO great bands - Bright
Eyes and Desaparecidos - and writes some of the most amazing songs you'll
ever here. And he's all of 23 years old. Bastard. :-)) But there's
something special about Tori, and I assume there always will be. Especially
right now, when she's at her artistic peak.
Steve the Sweet Fat Man

I don't deal well with the word 'fuck'. it just seems ugly and broken to me.
Anyone like Evanescence? When asked about musical influences, they DID
include Tori :)
Anyways neat-sounding slightly-repetitive band. Look hopeful though, have
nice Therion-style vocals. (Therion : Operatic death metal - very beautiful
on most albums :)
Also, what do Gorillaz make people think? I'm listening to Clint Eastwood
right now but also have listened 19-2000 and tomorrow...
come to think of it Tori speaks for all of us about many things we have
trouble dealing with, no? I've got things happened I still can't talk
about...
on Brad Shultz and torture stories - see above about selling media. Almost
every land has a history with torture. Worst public offenders right now are
Iraq, China, and the US... many others aren't mentioned much. That's
ignoring the kind of torture non-government-types (ie: citizens) do to
eachother. Don't ask. Don't ever ask.
The US -will- invade Iraq. One of the questions of course is will they have
a draft again? (probably). One of the others is how badly they'll offend
politics on the international pool (right now - coming off incompetent and
brutal...) The arms thing is a lousy excuse. They -should- come up with
better. Unless they want to publish bills of sale, in which case it's a
different situation.
People applying for refugee status to Canada from the US are on the rise - I
think it's multiplied in numbers since last year. Heard the news not too
long ago. (and before people claim huh??? last year the numbers were ~230
individuals). Folks here are expecting it to rise CONSIDERABLY higher in
the next while. Especially if the US does a draft again.
and the everwonderful fun-filled Simon Booth returns!!!!

Hola mes amies,
Okay, call me a total non-patriot, but I though Saddam had a good idea when
he suggested that George W and himself have a debate via satellite.
I mean, how cool would that be? They'd have a chance to discuss their
differences, one up each other, talk about those goddamn weapons, etc.
Talking is sometimes one of the best ways to avoid a confrontation. And if
it makes either president look stupid, that's also a bonus, since I don't
like either of them.
But the debate idea? It's fucking great. And I can't believe the white
house rejected it. Argh. Stupid people.
But Monsieur Saddam? He's an evil evil man, but he's also a damn fine
public speaker. How very odd.
He and Hitler should form a club. Saddam could be the secretary.
How Now, Brown Cow?

Subject: RE: F-king Music
Surprised Alanis wasn't on your list. NIN uses the word better in "Something
I Can Never Have" on Pretty Hate Machine "just a fading f-king reminder of
who I used to be"... "Closer" became too much of a stripper anthem and lost
its bite. Billy Joel uses it on "Laura" off of Nylon Curtain, which was
pretty shocking to hear the piano man do that. Staind "It's Been A While"
has it in there nicely. Pink Floyd's "Not Now John". Marianne Faithful
covered "Working Class Hero", but there's also "Why'd You Do It" which has a
lot of nice profanities. Joni Mitchell's got it in one of her songs (Beat of
Black Wings?). I think Leonard Cohen's got it in a couple of his songs... If
you ever hear the uncensored version of the Doors "The End", where Jim goes
"I want to...." and yells, there was a part taken out before he goes "All
night long". Some of the live versions have it uncut, way more intense than
the studio version. Even James Taylor used it in one of his songs in recent
years. Prince has a few, but nothing like "Sexy MF" which doesn't sound that
dirty... The Who have managed to have it played on commercial radio, "Who
Are You" is the only song that they can get away with using it without
having to bleep it. The Stones have used it, but it's never been heard on
the radio ("C--ksucker Blues"). But the most surprising uses of the word are
in obscure 78s from the 30s and 40s. That requires a lot of hunting
though...
It's probably better to hear it sublimely placed than say Guns N' Roses or
Metallica (mostly in their Anti-Nowhere League cover of "So What"). Sex
Pistols "Bodies" is the funniest use of the F- word. Dead Kennedys "Too
Drunk to F-k"... Or any funk song that used it in lieu of... and of course
the Rage Against the Machine chant in "Killing in the Name Of". Best use is
probably by the top 40 types you wouldn't expect it from, or the ones who
use it because it comes off as intense. Otherwise it's done for controversy.
And I won't even go into the best and worse uses of it in rap, because that
would take a week. But NWA and Ice-T did a good job of getting the
president's attention in their use of the f-word.
When Tori sings it, it's not that noticable, except in her talking during
the shows and interviews. But Professional Widow's last line sounds somewhat
more shocking, don't you think??

Tori Amos' spirited offerings rock fans
She puts passion into her lyrics and piano style during Landmark
appearance.
March 02, 2003
By Mark Bialczak Staff writer
Two hours of totally Tori was just what the packed crowd at the
Landmark Theatre shouted for Saturday night.
"I love you Tori," screamed one woman in the audience the moment Amos
took the stage.
Yes, Amos' high-pitched, breathy voice is an acquired taste. And it
obviously was a taste that her fans had acquired long ago and keep on
the top shelf of their disc collection.
The singer and piano player from North Carolina sang and played piano
in her trademark, unique styles.
At the microphone, Amos delivers every line with passion. Sometimes her
emotional delivery obscures the lyrics, but that didn't matter to her
very happy fans.
As much as she goes all out with her vocals, Amos sometimes goes only
halfway with the piano. That is, she's half-on, half-off the piano
bench as she shimmies her way toward the crowd. She also does a great
job simultaneously playing the keyboards with her right hand and the
piano with her left.
With the accompaniment of a bass player and drummer, Amos thundered
home her personal style.
She's no doubt a forerunner in the increasingly popular
vocals-and-piano style, but she's definitely not from the funky Alicia
Keys, jazzy Diana Krall or soothing Norah Jones schools of pop music.
Instead, Amos isn't afraid to rock hard, and perches on the cusp of New
Age with her spirited work.
The crowd was extremely pleased with hits from her earlier work,
particularly "Cornflake Girl" from her disc "Under the Pink," and
"Crucify" from her disc "Little Earthquakes.
The Native American-influenced work from her new disc, "Scarlet's
Walk," was received well, too.
For the perfectly placed cover song, Amos chose Fleetwood Mac's classic
"Landslide."
Amos definitely was more Stevie Nicks-Christine McVie than Dixie Chicks
as she pounded the piano and enchantingly caressed the lyrics.
One fan danced her way up the center aisle, until a male usher gently
urged her back to her seat. In fact, the whole concert, it seemed like
Amos' many female fans connected with her music and messages more
easily than the men in the crowd.
Amos didn't talk directly to the fans between songs much.
She made a point of telling about her walk around Syracuse earlier in
the day, when she happened to spy a T-shirt that called her name.
So she bought the message "A Woman's Place Is in the Dome."
"That seemed right to me," Amos said. "They might not like it when I
wear it around Georgetown. But that doesn't matter to me."
Opener Jeffrey Gaines obviously was somewhat in awe of his
surroundings.
He loved the Landmark Theatre.
"I hope you looked at the crazy lobby," Gaines said. "It's on drugs,
this place! You've got a cool ... place to party. It's great."
With his gritty voice and acoustic guitar, Gaines won over the crowd.
The fans who got there on time lustily cheered every song of his
half-hour set.
The singer-songwriter served up deep work from his disc "Toward the
Sun."
"Falling Apart" certainly had it all together.

definitely (among the people who DO post) like a little family to me, and
I *definitely* like the feeling (illusion, maybe?) of being close-knit

Okay, okay, I'll quit with the sappiness! :P

Hola mes amies!
I wrote a poem! It is violent! Hurrah!
Title: Abattoir
Two dead children clung on the sides
Their hands missing
Bloodied stumps tied together with twine
Around the two trees in the yard
Inside there was still the dinner
The bread hardened and covered with ants
Sprawled on the floor was the mother
Skirt pulled up to her bleeding chest
Panties twisted around her neck
I looked closer and then I saw
That her nipples had been sliced
Like the apples she had bought for dessert
One a day
The doctor’Äôs away
The front of her shirt was soaked
I saw these things
And I saw the stairs
And I wondered where they were now
Where they out in the country
Or gone to the city?
Or were they still inside the house?
Two dead children clung on the sides
As I left to make my way home
Just another family slaughtered
Just another day at war
How Now, Brown Cow?

Subject: Emergency Petition to the UN Council
Dear friend,
I'm hoping you can join me on an emergency petition from
citizens around the world to the U.N. Security Council. The
petition's going to be delivered to the 15 member states of
the Security Council on THURSDAY, MARCH 6.
If hundreds of thousands of us sign, it could be an enormously
important and powerful message -- people from all over the
world joining in a single call for a peaceful solution. But
we really need everyone who agrees to sign up today. You can
do so easily and quickly at:
http://www.moveon.org/emergency/
The stakes couldn't really be much higher. A war with Iraq
could kill tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians and inflame
the Middle East. According to current plans, it would require
an American occupation of the country for years to come. And
it could escalate in ways that are horrifying to imagine.
We can stop this tragedy from unfolding. But we need to speak
together, and we need to do so now. Let's show the Security
Council what world citizens think.
Thank you & Peace,
Beth

oops -- a slight correction. tori is actually on march 10th (my friend

I feel like I have so much to tell you since I haven't written in a while.
Well, I don't know what the last thing I told you was so I'll just have to
guess what you don't know.
On Friday school was off for a teacher's convention. Emma called me in the
morning on Friday and asked me if I would help her at a consession stand at
the Kohl Centre. I was very hesitate and nervous because I wasn't very good
in those kind of situations - a consession stand - me, sometimes my learning
disability kicks in in the worst times, well, it doesn't really kick in,
because it's always there. But you know, whatever. Anyways, I said yes
because I wanted to help her and I didn't want to lie to her like my dad
said. My dad said I should say that we have plans today. But I didn't feel
right about saying that. So I did, it was kind of nerving at first, but
then I got the hang of it and it was fine. She came over after that and we
hung out together.
On Sunday, I went to Derek's house and he came to my house also.
Yesterday at school I was hanging out with my friends Emmanual and Ida in my
science class, they are really cool. There's something special about those
two in particular. Emmanuel is really into music and Ida is...well, she's
Ida...what do you say, she's awesome, she's funny. The strange thing is
that she went to middle school with me and she remembers things about me in
that school that aren't very pleasant, but she refers to it as "old shit" so
I'm happy about that.
I wrote my first song for my album (a dream right now, maybe reality later)
I'll e-mail it to you all later. The bell rung.
Current mood: Content, tired
Current sounds/music: People on computers, people talking, the annoying
sound of someone twisting some kind of toy, etc.
Current place: My school library

Subject: Just a suggestion
This is a letter to the editor I've just sent out. I'm hearing that people
who are trying to organize a protest for the day we invade Iraq are running
into difficulties with permits, etc. This is not a Protest. This is a
peaceful assembly that is NOT planned. Please read on, and Pass it on.
It seems that the voice of the people is being stifled by those who are
blindly patriotic. The people I speak to don't support a US led war, but
they feel helpless to do anything about it. The masses of protestors around
the world get very little press and that creates the impression that not
many people are making an effort to make their voices heard.
On September 11th, people huddled around their TV sets and absorbed the
horror, over and over. I heard many say they wish there had been someplace
to go to be with others. In that spirit, I'd like to make a suggestion.
If everyone who opposes the war in the way it's being waged were to gather
in a local place (such as a park) on the day we invade Iraq, maybe everyone
would see exactly how many citizens are against this action. Maybe everyone
could just make a commitment to themselves to go to the local park (or
central landmark) at 6PM on the day our military attacks Iraq. No
organization, no marches or speeches, just every local community having a
free assembly (as we are guaranteed by the Constitution).
If you think this is a good idea, pass it on. I'd be interested in seeing
how many communities would have people show up.
