Could have sworn I had something new to say but I guess it's just replies
this time.
John wrote in #1871 on Gaiman vs. Adams:
> I liked the Dirk Gently books a lot more, plus they are really

I think you're talking about "So Long and Thanks For All The Fish". I tend
to read Douglas Adams around Christmas and New Year as the are so short and
I know them so well it doesn't matter if I put them down. I can also still
laugh insanely at them. I think one of the most interesting thoughts he has
in one of his books is that U.S. writers are prone to writing 500 pages of
something that's not relevant to the story.
Loopy Lavs said:
>With Tori in particular I used to read the lyric book before or as I was

I think that's been my problem in recent years. I've spent too much time
trying to work out what is being said that I've forgotten that it really
should be all about the music.
Cyndi's thoughts on Gaiman:
> intriguing.. I thought it was a great read. very descriptive and I
> had my nose stuck in it the entire week I spent reading it.
I found I was forcing myself to read it because of it being "very
descriptive". The whole Lakeside section in American Gods could have been
left out as it wasn't crucial to the main plot. In fact, it could have made
a reasonable novel on its own. The story dwelt too much on minor characters
which only seemed to pad out the book. While they were strong characters in
themselves, it seemed a whole lot of verbiage for little return.
One criticism I have of sci-fi and fantasy (of which I've read a mountain
of) is that authors can too easily rigidly define their world, when I far
prefer to fill in the gaps myself and create my own world within a few
defined parameters. Definitely a case of less is more. Also if something is
described that doesn't fit in with my version of the author's world I'll
mentally switch off. I'd rather see well rounded characters instead of a
minutely described world.
All this talk of The Wall in Berlin... I've had it on video for years and
have never watched it. I fear what's been done to the songs.
Linda asked in #1872...
>So, while I'm not asking whether it's the sole purpose for whether you
>like a musician, do looks still count for something?
If it wasn't for Tori humping her piano stool, I'm not sure if I would have
paid much attention to her. I'm also glad there is a whole lot more to her
but as much as we'd like to think we're not superficial, looks do mean a
great deal if it's not the sound that grabs you initially. Hideously bad
looks can work well for the same reason as you can't help but notice.

Hey all!
I'm buried in end of term work, but had to share what happened to me today.
I've been doing my best to avoid *my* professor since the peace party (hell,
almost a month!). It really hurt that he didn't bother to show, and it
seems to me that if someone is my friend, they have the time of day for me.
The Dean saw me today and exclaimed, "Oh! You ARE still a student!", noting
my absence from campus activities. I'm not quite the drudge I used to be,
but I've talked myself into being a bit that way, at least until my term
paper is finished. And the less I'm on campus, the less chance of seeing
him. I'm still doing my radio show (after a two week absence), but split as
soon as it is done.
So today driving to school, I'm cruising along fine and dandy until about 2
blocks from the entrance. I have a full blown anxiety attack sitting at a
light. It was so bad I looked behind me to see if I was about to be hit.
At that second, my Professor's face locks in my mind. He felt like he was
so close to me, his energy, like he was in the car with me. I get to the
entrance of the school and the big, fat SUV in front of me slows, a car
turns in, then I turned in. It was the Professor's car. No Shit. I pulled
into the first parking lot and he continued on to the other side of campus.
I don't know if he saw me.
How does he not sense this connection? Rather, how does he not respond, for
I can't imagine he doesn't sense it. This sort of thing doesn't develop in
a vacuum. But I'm going to continue to avoid him for a while. Maybe if I'm
not about for him to watch (I feel like a tv program for him), maybe he'll
miss me. If he misses me, maybe he'll think twice about this approach he
has. Maybe.
How do you throw someone out of your heart? If he wasn't there, he wouldn't
be in my head. *sigh* Fate has a funny way of working.
Fairy Blessings,
Bethey

I keep listening to Tori's version of You Belong to
Me-- it's so beautiful. Thing is, it barely sounds
like her. She has that old-fashioned sound to her
voice, which is actually pretty freakin' cool for a
movie that's supposed to be set in the early '50s.
I just downloaded Angels, however, and I'm a bit
disappointed with that one. It sounds like yet
another forgettable Scarlet's Walk track. I guess
this is Tori's new sound. :-\
That's pretty much it for now...

The onlything I can think of is "ambiguity." Is that what you were
thinking of? If it's something more sophisticated than that, it's beyond
me.
Sorry to hear about the burn. Bad TV is probably the main culprit, as you
say, though I doubt if the networks could be sued successfully. Too bad.
> Do a musician's looks matter?
Of course. Looks matter, and in this world they matter more than they
should, but they always matter at least a little.
There have been surveys which show that, overall, tall men do better in
the corporate world than short men. It's a small advantage, but it is an
advantage.
Would I still like Tori if she looked like Karl Malden? Yes (reminds me
of Groucho Marx' line, "yes, but I'd keep it to myself"). Would Rufus
Wainwright be as popular if he was short, balding and fat? (Probably not).
But our personalities and talents evolve in our bodies, partly in response
to how people perceive us, and how they respond to us. So, for example,
if Rufus had grown up short, balding and fat, he probably would have a
somewhat different personality and he'd write somewhat different songs.
Talent counts a lot more than looks, especially in the long run, but looks
do count, too. But, especially for performers, looks are just the raw
material, you just have to look at what you have and figure out the best
way to use it. Tori is very good at this.

From what I understand (not from personal experience), it's a complicated
thing, but what it amounts to is that the record company fronts the money
for recording, promotion and touring, but then they take it out of the
money the artist gets from album sales. If you record one album, and it
stiffs, you can end up owing your record company money (though I suspect
this is never collected, I think it's just a loss for them). But the
artist ultimately pays (if successful) and the record company takes a loss
(if not).

I gave up on being a completist with Tori quite a while ago. And
recently, in need of cash, I sold a lot of the singles to
www.secondspin.com (which worked out pretty well). But that's one
advantage to being a completist, it can give you things to sell when you
need to. I once paid my rent with the first 51 issues of "Cerebus the
Aardvark" (well, I had to convert them to cash first, I didn't just give
the comics to my landlord).
As B/4,
John

TORI AMOS RELEASES TALES OF A LIBRARIAN NOV. 18TH - SEE 'MARY' NOW
Nov 13 2003
IT'S almost time for TALES OF A LIBRARIAN - the first-ever
compilation from Tori Amos <url:
http://www.atlantic-records.com/amostori >! The two-disc, CD/ Bonus
DVD collection arrives this Tuesday, November 18th. To get a feel
for what's in store, check out the new Tori media player <url:
http://buzztone.atlanticrecords.com/toriamos >. You'll be able to
experience the album's first video, 'Mary,' an amalgam of past Tori
videos that'll take you back in time to some of Tori's past looks,
themes, and songs.
Amos has described the new release as a musical 'autobiography.' She
has personally revisited and 'reconditioned' this compilation of
original material, retooling the multi-track recordings to offer a
new perspective on some of her most beloved songs. Among the tracks
on the audio CD: 'Precious Things,' 'Playboy Mommy,' 'Spark,' 'God,
' 'Cornflake Girl,' 'Baker Baker,' 'Winter,' 'Tear In Your Hand,'
and of course, 'Silent All These Years.' In addition, TALES OF A
LIBRARIAN will include a pair of brand-new songs - 'Angels' and
'Snow Cherries From France' - as well as newly recorded renditions
of two ultra-rare B-sides - 'Mary' (originally found on the European
'Crucify' CD single) and 'Sweet Dreams' (from 1992's limited edition
'Winter' CD).
The bonus DVD features songs recorded live earlier this month during
sound check of the final show of Amos' summer 2003 North American
tour. Performances include 'Pretty Good Year,' 'Northern Lad,' and
'Honey.' The DVD also includes audio remixes of 'Putting the Damage
On' and 'Mr. Zebra.' Whether you're a fervent fan or a new Tori
devotee, this collection is not to be missed.
