I just got some new CDs last night -- the new PJ Harvey, which I have
heard in other forms and needed to find a way to have it with me at all
times, a Vienna Teng album ("Waking Hour;" I got "Warm Strangers"
earlier this week), and a Sixteen Horsepower album ("Low Estate").
I've been listening to PJ steadily for about six months now -- I'm pretty
sure I
mentioned this here before, and I spent a lot of time listening to "Dry"
before wanting to move on to other albums. I was unhappy with a lot of
"Rid of Me" -- I just can't stand Steve Albini's production style, and
his influence on that album is way way too much for me. Her voice and
songs are so comforting to me -- I'm not sure how to explain how.
Same with Vienna Teng, only it's much simpler -- her voice is so
soothing, but in a dark way. I think sometimes she's way, way too pop,
but mostly I really like her songs. "Harbor" fits so well with my own
personal symbolism, and also "Tower."
I've fallen head over heels in love with Sixteen Horsepower, though. I
got their album "Folklore" earlier this year, and listened to it nonstop
for a few weeks before acquiring "Sackcloth 'n' Ashes," which I have to
listen to almost every day or something goes awry in my brain. I usually
detest country, but this isn't really country in the same way -- it's so
beautifully dark and gothic and full of all that fire and brimstone
stuff that I love. They do have a way with banjos, too. :) I don't know
yet what I think of "Low Estate" -- I like a lot of it but it's going to
take some getting used to. I think it's going to live in my car for a
while.
I also saw "School of Rock" this weekend. What a sweet movie! I like
Jack Black a lot -- what prevents me from loving him is his
confrontationality, which is too much for me sometimes. But I appreciate
his passion for music, and I think he's a wonderful songwriter too (not
so much by lyrical content, although I will admit most of the Tenacious
D album does make me laugh), but for his ability with guitars and
melodies and harmonies.

Greetings All!
So I met two guys that both want to date me. The first is in Allentown.
He's a Ph.D student at Lehigh in Material Science with two Masters (Physics
and Philosophy), an engineer at Lucent, and a guitarist with a punk rock
band. We've had fascinating, intriguing talks about deep, deep subjects in
two dates. For the second date, he invited me to his place for a Sunday
afternoon. I was thrilled with the pictures of mermaids and fairies, the
masses of books on philosophy and poetry. I wasn't real thrilled with the
handgun on the nightstand, the rifle in the corner and the Uzi in another
corner. I wasn't real thrilled with the fact he downed 7 beers in 4 hours
with no apparent effect. He wouldn't tell me much about himself, but there
were moments when he let me in a little and I was super intrigued. The fact
he's an artist and tall, dark and handsome didn't hurt either. I told him I
was interested in dating him and asked him to consider dinner at my place.
Over the past 24 hours, I've reconsidered. Why would I date yet ANOTHER
alcoholic who makes me feel I'm not good enough for him.
On the other hand is a guy who lives in Philly and works for City Hall as a
computer tech. Our first date was very pleasant, loose, easy. We walked
through New Hope, shopping and walking the canal (my legs ended up with sun
poisoning, the sun is so much stronger than it used to be). We have the
same interests politically and spiritually, and it felt quite friendly being
with him. I'm not wildly attracted as I am to the punk rock player, but
he's such a nice guy. He looks a bit like Kevin Spacey. I almost threw him
over because he let me lead him passively on our first date and he's only an
inch taller than me. I've always liked men to be tall. Then I realized
that he's read almost my entire web page in a week and questioned me
knowledgably about some really obscure links, and he respects me, which the
punk rocker does not. Why the hell would I choose someone who makes me EARN
their respect as opposed to someone who has already done the research and
respects me for what I already am?
I was almost a fucking idiot and I hope I didn't blow it. I'm pleased I
caught my mistake in 24 hours, before I compounded it. Wish me luck. At
least I can know that I recognize the paths I took once upon a time that
hurt me so badly, and avoid them.

Subject: Be Serious!
Here in Greensburg, PA we have our annual July 4th festival at a local
county park (Twin Lakes). They have 50,000 people come to this event spread
over four days. They have lots of booths with crafts and food. They also
have several stages with lots of entertainment. The entertainment is very
good, but local (no big name acts). At work today I was reading the program
and one act grabbed my attention. It reads as follows:
"4:00 - 5:50 (Sunday, July 4th Island Stage)
Caryn Carson
You will not believe how good this girl is. A finalist in the Pittsburgh
American Idol contest, Caryn is poised to become the next Tori Amos.except
Caryn is a better songwriter.. and has a better voice.and can play the piano
better. Okay, Caryn is a lot better than Tori Amos. Caryn's got the voice
and the talent to become a house-hold name, and I just want everyone to
remember where they saw her first. (Ahem.)"
This is quoted right from the program!
I will hold my judgement to I see her (if I am in town that day) but such
phases as Bullshit! , Heresy, Journey into Science Fiction, and of course,
Be Serious cross my mind!
If there are any Tori fans in the Pittsburgh area they may want to be at the
Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival next Sunday. Wear your Tori tee
shirts to make this girl feels more at home.

Footnote:
Last week I gave my article "Mr. Chicken" to the General Manager of the
local Wendy's chain. He thought it was funny but today at each cash
register there was a detailed product description of Spinach Chicken Salad.
The timing seems strange and I wonder if he wanted to prevent any rumors
about genetically altered chickens from circulating around the population!

Greetings All! I sent this once last Monday, but I guess it never
arrived...unless of course Violet is deleting my posts just to mess with my
mind ;) , and then my compy crashed while I was updating it to resend, so
this is my third attempt.... Anyway...
So I met two guys that both want to date me. The first is in Allentown.
He's a Ph.D student at Lehigh in Material Science with two Masters (Physics
and Philosophy), an engineer at Lucent, and a guitarist with a punk rock
band. We've had fascinating, intriguing talks about deep, deep subjects in

was interested in dating him and asked him to consider dinner at my place.
Over the past 24 hours, I've reconsidered. Why would I exclusively date yet
ANOTHER alcoholic who makes me feel I'm not good enough for him.

I was almost a fucking idiot and I hope I didn't blow it. I'm pleased I
caught my mistake in 24 hours, before I compounded it. Wish me luck. At
least I can know that I recognize the paths I took once upon a time that
hurt me so badly, and avoid them, or at least walk them differently.
UPDATE: So the Philly guy came to dinner last night at my place. It was
pleasant, he makes for good company. His birthday is July 10 and he
admitted since his divorce 5 years ago, the 4th and his birthday have always
sucked. I told him that I didn't feel the chemistry I'll need for a serious
relationship, but told him I had a proposal. From now until his birthday,
I'll be his exclusive girlfriend. I'll do whatever he wants, go where ever
he'd like, be attentive, and he can just relax and enjoy the next ten days.
If at the end of it, there is still no chemistry, then we part as good
friends, no harm, no foul. He was thrilled with my proposal. He can't get
over the fact he can tell me anything and I won't judge him.
Yet, when we were kissing, it felt like I was kissing my brother or a
friend. He also is way too much of a fan right now, and I hate being on a
pedestal. It hurts when you fall from a height. But it feels good to offer
to do something like this for someone. And I've found that there is nothing
more attractive to women than a guy who has a good-looking woman on his arm,
so maybe he'll get a few more bites from the ladies afterwards.
Mr. Punk Rocker sent me an email 48 hours after our second date ended (to
the minute!) to say he'd like to see me again and he's off on a spontaneous
vacation and will be back after the 4th. I'm glad he sent it after I'd
decided to see Philly for the next week +. We'll see how he responds when I
won't be able to see him for a week. Besides, I don't know if I can
entertain a serious relationship with him because of the points above. But
it could make for a really interesting summer. :)
And the really horrible part of it all is that if you put Punk Rocker and
Philly together, you get the Professor. *sigh* I know, I'm sick.
Fairy Blessings,

In #1902, Bethey said about Reagan:
>Yes, it was his policies that destroyed the USSR, but it was a massive
>gamble that really cost us in the long run. "Reaganomics" is the reason
>$35,000 homes are currently selling for $500,000. Because of the effect
>of Reagan on the economy, families now require two full time wage-earners
>to have the same quality of life as was had by one "head of household"
There's a joke here that runs along the lines of, "You know you're in
Sydney when you're plumber's gay, your hairdresser straight and you still
can't buy a decent home for under $500,000." While I was a bit young to
understand the full extent of Reaganomics, I don't think the blame can be
laid on any one single person. You could say we adopted a lot of his
policies and my country generally follows trends in yours.
Pre-Reagan, the Australian dollar was actually worth more than the American
and within ten years made it down to half the value. In that time, there
were only two really big spurts in housing prices, the late 80's and the
last few years. The value of my house has nearly doubled in the last 3
years and I've done very little to it. But at both times the booms were
caused by a combination of government policy and real estate investors. If
you boil down the factors, it's basically sheer greed on the part of
investors that drives the market. I don't know if you have similar policies
regarding investment in real estate, but it wouldn't surprise me if you did.
It is fair to blame the end of the single income family on housing prices,
but some of the blame can also be attributed to some people trying to live
beyond their means. I won't crucify anyone for wanting something better in
life, but when families with two incomes have a massive mortgage and huge
credit card debts have to count every cent, while living in an expensive
area and driving a luxury car/s complain about having no money, I have no
sympathy whatsoever. They are the ones that chose their lifestyle of debt.
I don't really have any feelings regarding Ronnie in either way. From the
outside, he appeared to be both a statesman and a strong leader, which is
something your country is sadly lacking at the moment.
Bethey again in #1903 about Roger Waters:
>Brian: The DVD of "In the Flesh" is the one that turned me onto "Amused
>to Death"...(uh, depressing? On a TORI list someone complains music is
>depressing??? I just had to laugh...)
I know it sounds a bit odd too. For me, Tori has a couple of songs that are
depressing, but as a whole I find her calming and uplifting. I think the
main difference between Amos and Waters is that Tori is an eternal optimist
while Roger is the eternal pessimist.
When I suggest you're missing out on special effects with Waters, I was
referring to Pink Floyd's "Delicate Sound Of Thunder" days, with the full
on light shows, burning beds and flying pigs. "Live In Pompeii" was way too
early for that sort of thing.
re: Lavs' scarcity:
>Bri: go smack her for me and get her up to speed! ;)
I'd never smack her but I wouldn't put a good spanking out of the question.
In the same digest, John wrote:
>He's given credit for toppling the Soviet Union, but what is
>important to remember is that if the USSR hadn't collapsed, Ronnie would
>have had the US in a nuclear war with them (which he insisted repeatedly
>was "winable").
One thing I remember vividly about Reagan's time was when he was doing a
sound check and said, "We start bombing the Soviets in five minutes." I can
remember the fear that surrounded the world at that time and the threat of
nuclear holocaust. In my book, even the threat of terrorism in this day and
age pales in comparison. And there's still a certain scene in Terminator 2
I can't watch to this day.
More catching up next time.
