(this is in response to something Cyndi posted on her LJ a while back
after seeing Penn & Teller's "Bullshit!", which I have to see, about how
come drugs are illegal anyway and if I want to fuck myself up, "ain't
nobody's business if I do.")
Back in the 1960s, I remember wondering why some drugs were illegal and
some weren't. The nature of the drugs themselves was obviously not the
answer. But, looking around, it was pretty clear who was doing which
drugs, and who was making the laws.
(when politicians got together to make deals and laws, the old cliche
description was a "smoke-filled room," and it didn't have to be specified
that it was tobacco, not pot, that was making the smoke.)
In the 1970s, for example, cocaine was illegal but certainly not in
hiding. I had a friend who worked for a record company briefly (temp
receptionist job), and she said she got a chart in the morning, listing
which deliveries went to which conference rooms and meetings. It was
right down in black and white: pizza at 11:45am goes to Conference Room A,
catered lunch at 12:30pm goes to Conference Room B, coke delivery at
1:00PM goes to Conference Room C.
But then, when cocaine became crack, and moved into the poor
neighborhoods, well, we've seen what happened.
And I'm not saying that these aren't serious drugs, but so is alcohol.
And, as with alcohol during Prohibition, making something illegal doesn't
accomplish anything other than get a lot of people arrested. Read any
novel written during Prohibition, people were drinking more then than they
do now (certainly more hard liquor).
Pot on the other hand, I don't think of as a really serious drug. But
it's good when you're young, since it helps you to be relaxed and goofy in
situations where you might otherwise be uptight. So, if it's not that
dangerous (compared to liquor or cigarettes, for example), why is it
illegal?
Well, who were the original users? Black jazz musicians, and then filthy
hippies. On the other hand, when Nixon was careening around the White
House in his final days, talking to the paintings, he was drinking, not
toking.
After all, if the government really cared whether we lived or died, they'd
close all the McDonald's (among other things).

Reed quoted Tori:
> For any particular song, I can't tell you the books that
> were on the floor, the photographs . . . . I don't let
> anybody keep a record of that. Those are the secret
> ingredients."
Interesting that she has some sources which she reveals and
some which she doesn't.
It's pretty common to want to conceal where you get your
ideas (as if they spring from some other dimension or
something).
Hemingway got a lot of ideas from other writers, but he
seldom admitted it. Usually he would say that he was much
more inspired by the paintings in the Louvre than by
literature (especially literature by anybody who was still
alive). Everybody is part of a global and historical
process of creativity, why pretend otherwise?
Me, I like to say where things come from. I always remember
a review that Pete Townsend wrote for Rolling Stone of the
Who's album "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy." He detailed
where he stole the riffs (one was from a blindfold test he
took for some magazine, the single wasn't a hit, so he stole
the riff), collaborators who weren't given credit, and
so on. It was hilarious, and it certainly didn't diminish
the album in any way.
So, my novels include an ongoing series called "The Ten Pillars
of Modern Literature," which is little reviews of the books
which have influenced me in my writing. So, my sources are
built right into my books.
Here's a quote from one of my characters, which was inspired by
seeing Penn & Tellar (conveniently tying this to my other
message):

(The only problem is, I've already done ten, and there are more
to add, so I think that, like the Hitchhiker's Guide "Trilogy,"
it will have to go beyond the original number.)

Getting free of the clutches of Atlantic in order to be in
the clutches of Sony, the company which is working overtime
to put viruses into your computers. Maybe she was better
off with Atlantic.

I really have to investigate Netflix. People are always amazed that I'm
not a member, since I like movies.
I'll write more about the boots at some point, but they continue to be
great.
Best Tori albums since Pele. So there.
